We were talking about it in the conference room.
This had a feel of Game 7 vibes, if you will.
Punch for punch.
That physicality felt a lot like Game 4 of Round 1.
Neither team wanting to drop this game, knowing how crucial it is to the series.
I go back to early on in this game.
Darvin Hamm is miked up and you hear him say to his guys,
the Warriors are hard as hell to beat.
You must stay together through the ups and downs.
The Lakers did just that.
I heard you, big game, say when they went down as many as 12 in the third,
you wondered how they would respond.
LeBron just called him a resilient bunch.
Down by seven going into the fourth.
You weather the first 30-point performance from Steph Curry in this series.
By the way, triple-double, 30, 10, and 14.
Behind that of five double-figures scores for the Lakers, led by LeBron James.
But I don't think any is bigger than that of Lonnie Walker.
And it's probably where we should start as the Lakers take a 3-1
commanding lead in this series.
15 all in the fourth for Lonnie Walker, the fourth.
Man, for those of us who are getting to witness a game like tonight,
where you have arguably, maybe not statistically,
but one of the best players in the world, Steph Curry, what he was able to do.
And then to see just how much the Lakers have grown as a team.
It's a beautiful thing to have a team where, you know, like,
this is your team, and you've got a nice fist.
They're all together.
And Lonnie just keeping his phone on the hook.
You know, a lot of guys go away.
This guy was starting before the trade.
He was getting 20 to 25 points a game.
Playoff series are so interesting, right?
Like the garbage time or blowout minutes that took place in game two in San Francisco.
And it's not that Darvin Hamm and the coaching staff didn't think Lonnie Walker could play.
But there definitely was something that they felt or saw in those minutes at the end of game two
that transitioned into more opportunity in game three
that led to more trust and opportunity tonight in game four.
It didn't matter whether he had played or not in previous games.
Didn't matter if he had gotten a lot of shots in the three games before.
You are a professional.
That means you prepare yourself to play no matter what.
And he just, he deserves a lot of credit.
That video, his teammates surrounding him in that way.
That means they see the character in him and the work that he's putting in.
LeBron telling the postgame reporter, Chris Haynes, how to do his job.
And rightfully so.
That's the one moment where he said, we're going to Lonnie.
Chris was ready, of course.
No doubt.
I mean, this is an amazing story.
Remember last summer, the Spurs had Lonnie Walker.
They gave him a qualifying offer to be a restricted free agent.
They rescinded that later.
Laker said, okay, we'll jump in and take Lonnie.
Give him six, six and a half million.
One-year deal.
Lonnie kind of bet on himself.
And here he is now.
He started 30-something games earlier in the season.
It wasn't all winners once the Lakers made the trades.
You know, D'Angelo, pretty good run for him.
Jared Vanderbilt, of course.
Lonnie was one of the so-called losers, I guess.
He lost playing time.
In the last six weeks, he's had 12 DNP by coach's decisions.
He didn't have a shot in the first three quarters tonight.
And then tonight, magically, you know, you guys can speak about Laker playoff lore.
Lonnie Walker, the fourth, definitely part of it now.
No question.
This is a memorable game.
Like this series, obviously, which both teams knew was a really important game.
And Lonnie Walker, the fourth quarter, right?
And it only matters if you continue to advance.
And that's all the team is thinking about.
We're not going to jinx it.
I think, too, from a team standpoint, it's something that Darvin has preached a lot about.
Just how much he's appreciated that about this squad.
Especially coming together so late in the season, if you will.
You look back at that first round.
Any given night, it was a new score.
Doing it by a collective.
I think we continue to see it here in this series.
And as I mentioned, there was five Lakers in double digits.
LeBron had 27.
AD, 23 and 15.
Austin Reeves, excuse me, adding 21.
You got Dennis Schroeder, 10.
And Lonnie Walker, again, the 15th.
15, excuse me.
I just think being able in moments like this.
We weren't really sure what we were going to get from the Lakers in the postseason.
We hadn't seen it yet.
We hadn't seen a whole lot of it.
But I think as they continue to figure it out together as a collective, obviously,
you're in the position that you are.
Up 3-1 against the Golden State Warriors.
Let's go back downtown.
AD is with Mike Trudeau.
All right, Anthony Davis, what a game.
We know you and LeBron have been in these situations,
but I got to ask you about Lonnie Walker.
All 15 of his points in the fourth quarter.
Unbelievable.
You said last game, he played for these moments since he was a kid.
Stay ready.
Don't play first series.
Don't play the first couple games in this series that comes in
and affect the game with a storm.
It's a special kid.
He wants this.
And Lonnie wanted this game tonight.
Yeah, he had been out of the rotation.
Darvin calls his name last game.
Plays well.
Fourth quarter tonight, he hits the three and then he just keeps going.
What were you and LeBron kind of doing?
Said, all right, get him in situations to roll with that.
Trust him.
One thing about being six, that we trust our guys.
You know, we make the right plays.
And late game, it was all Lonnie.
He made the right reads.
He was putting the ball in the basket.
And you trust him.
You live with it when someone got it going like that.
So, man, it's a big time performance from him.
To go up 3-1 against the defending champions, a team who never goes away, keep fighting.
Man, it was an unreal game.
I love it.
It was a fun one to watch.
I got to ask you about your defense.
And with Steph Curry, all the screen rolls, all the actions.
You're at the rim.
You're out defending him.
Down the stretch, you're on Steph, up to the three-point line.
What's that level of challenge?
And how have you been keyed in on it?
Man, I pride myself on defense.
They wanted, obviously, to switch with me.
And I took that personally.
I just wanted, I didn't want him.
I know where he gets.
He's like his step-back three.
And I just wanted to move my puppies.
As my man, Cus was saying.
I just wanted to move them puppies and keep him in front and make him take a tough shot.
And that's what I did.
He's a hell of a player.
There's no shot that he can't make.
He takes all the tough shots and he makes them.
I just wanted to make it tough on him and make him shoot over a contested hand.
And pray that he missed.
Because he'll make those.
And he missed.
Got it back.
And I just wanted to defend again and make a miss again.
And we didn't ever get a rebound.
So big-time defense for me.
But big-time rebounding from our guys.
Last one for you.
3-1 now.
That's the series lead.
You got to go back up to San Francisco.
What is the mindset now as you try to get that closeout?
We know what the environment is going to be.
Their arena is loud.
Their crowd is going to be on their side.
Down 3-1.
Obviously, they're going to come out with a lot of pace.
A lot of energy.
A lot of urgency.
Desperation.
And we got to do the same thing to close it out.
We know that this team is dangerous.
No matter on the road or at home.
And we got to make sure that we come out with the right mindset to close it out.
We've seen on the other side, them being up 3-1 and losing this series.
But also, I don't know if guys remember.
They were up 3-1 against OKC.
I mean down 3-1 against OKC.
Where Russ and KD end up winning that series.
So it's not over.
It's not the first of three.
It's the first of four.
And we got to come out with the same mindset Wednesday.
Go get some rest, man.
Thank you.
Loved that inside perspective from Anthony Davis.
Many wondered.
It was an even game.
What performance would you get?
Anthony Davis, 23-15.
Big game.
Three steals.
I say this lightly.
No blocks in this game.
And I will give you this perspective.
Anthony Davis through nine games.
Coming into this one here in the postseason, 37 blocks.
20-20 in the bubble.
He had 30 blocks in 21 games.
Talk about the elite defense you're getting from Anthony Davis.
Putting it all together tonight.
Yeah, I mean, only one block.
But the defense was still there.
I'm sure he altered, you know, just as many.
You know, he got some deflections, some steals.
But no blocks.
Except for that one late.
Yeah, I mean, I saw Anthony Davis there right after the game.
He had a lot to say to Chris Haynes.
That we won't know exactly what he said.
But it sounds like, you know, he paid attention a little bit
more to what people were tweeting and saying than he let on.
And so it will be interesting to, you know, with today being a weekday, right?
There's going to be a whole 24-hour sports media news cycle of Anthony Davis.
Even number performance in a playoff series.
And so it'll be interesting to see how people feel now about
Anthony Davis that had so much to say about these odd games.
Austin, big fourth quarter for the squad.
27-17.
What was the key down the stretch?
We just played good basketball.
And then Lonnie Walker did what Lonnie Walker, you know, has always done in his career.
You know, made what he said.
You know, but we stayed together as a group, you know, through the first three quarters.
You know, a lot of stuff was, you know, not going our way.
But, you know, we stuck to it.
And then fourth quarter, we, you know, played really well.
Describe that scene and just the emotions that went into it.
The game ends, all the players go over and kind of mob Lonnie.
It's a guy that's put in the work.
He's had to wait for his moment and he had it tonight and he delivered.
Yeah, for sure.
I mean, there's been multiple times, you know, he doesn't get a lot of bump when you go to
the gym later and get in the ice bath and he's there working out, you know, just as
a testament to who he is as a person and, you know, the love he has for the game.
So everybody knows what he can do.
And for him to come out and do that in a big game, you know, make a big shot after big
shot is, you know, very impressive.
And, you know, we greeted him the way he needed to be greeted.
You know, it seems like with each game, both teams are going to adjust.
They go with Gary Payton second in the starting lineup.
What kind of in-game adjustments you think favored you guys?
Yeah, I mean, it's a it's a chess match at this point.
You know, I think that they kind of got us strung out a little bit with putting him in
the lineup, kind of using him in that half role, trying to be a playmaker.
So, you know, I don't want to say what we talk about.
So we'll we'll leave it at that.
Physically, how are you feeling so far?
You really got to go in there in the second half offensively.
I know chasing clay around and all these guys, it's got to take a toll.
Yeah, for sure.
But, you know, this is what you play for.
Obviously, I haven't played very well in this whole series.
Game one was OK, but two and three were
nothing, nothing less than not very good, honestly.
But, you know, you stick with it and you go through that.
And every time I miss a shot, I have a turnover.
I go to the bench.
There hasn't been one time this whole series where someone on the bench wasn't like,
forget about it.
Like, be you, keep being you.
Don't worry about anything that's going on.
Next play, next play, next play.
And when you got teammates like that, it's easy to, you know, listen.
Yeah, I mean, it's very, very good to get this game.
But at the same time, like, you know, you still got to go get one more.
You know, you play in Golden State.
You know, they're going to come out desperate to keep their season going.
So this series is far from over.
You know, we got to go put a whole game together and win a game.
How are you feeling physically first off?
Honestly, tell me the truth.
I feel good.
Today, I felt, you know, a little bit better than I have the first three games.
But, hey, you know, this is part of it.
You know, you go through the first series, six games, chasing Bane around, Jah, you know.
And this is, what, I think game 92.
And this is my first time.
That's three college seasons in one.
So I'm learning on the fly.
I got good vets to learn from.
They wouldn't let me shoot yesterday after practice.
They told me to go home and lay down, get off my feet.
So, you know, I'm learning on the fly, like I said.
But, you know, this is a lot of fun.
Shout out, Lonnie Walker.
Score first mentality.
I liked what he said there, too, Fish.
No matter if it's the first quarter or the fourth quarter, it's the same for him.
You can only feel that way from the reps.
Like you said, he's been shooting shots his whole life.
And you can use your actual life experiences to help you later.
So it's a great perspective.
Like, free throw line is the same distance that you shot it when you were 12,
compared to when you're 27.
There's no question that he's learned the right habits.
He's formed the right habits as a young player.
So then when you sign with the Los Angeles Lakers,
you're not really wavering back and forth on your approach to your job.
Because you were taught that from the first day you entered the league,
being drafted by the Spurs.
And I think the Lakers are doing a good job of that as well,
as you see evidenced by Austin Reeves' development and growth.
Like day by day, young players coming onto teams and getting better every day.
And when you bring the right attitude,
it seems like Walker, this is who he is in all walks of life.
He seems like, I don't know what he does personally,
but he seems like he just like meditates
and brings a positive attitude to whatever he does.
So when something happens, it doesn't linger.
He kind of like, he sees maybe a barrier.
He sees it as just something he has to jump over a little higher.
When he got sat down on the bench, he's like,
I'm still on the team.
I'm still in the NBA.
I better not get a break.
And when he got a break, he was prepared.
So I could imagine when he's practicing, he's focused,
he's disciplined, and he's just waiting.
And that's not easy to do.
My hat's off for the mentality and the attitude
that a lot of athletes can't convey the way he does.
Ali, you and I cover a lot of practices during the year.
And when we get in there, we don't see a ton of it.
They let us in with a few minutes left.
And it's usually guys kind of winding down,
maybe the end of a scrimmage, free throws, whatever.
But there's always a group off to the side.
It's like a three-on-three half court,
maybe even a four-on-four.
And Darvin Ham calls it the stay-ready crew.
It's the guys who didn't play much in the previous game.
And Lonnie Walker, for almost two months,
was a big part of the stay-ready crew.
And you know what?
He absolutely stayed ready.
I give him a ton of credit.
Absolutely.
I want to pivot to the simple fact as well,
especially for a young player, a guy like Lonnie,
who is known and prides himself a lot on being able to score.
If you're going to earn your time,
earn your money in the postseason,
it certainly helps to be able to play both ends, right?
Offensive and defense.
Along with his 15 points, he had those two steals.
And it just makes me transition to think about,
you may be up 3-1,
but these are the defending champs, big game.
And they're not going to go away.
You saw, and we've seen many different performances
from that of Steph Curry.
And you saw what he had to do in dire situations
in the first series against the Kings,
on the road, in a game seven.
That mentality, as Lonnie just said,
that has to translate as they go up to San Francisco for game five.
Yeah, you would be miserably fooling yourself
if you think just because they're down 3-1,
that they can't dig themselves out of this.
They just need one win.
You can only think about winning the next game.
But that's actually the trick to winning in the playoffs, period.
The series total is irrelevant to you.
The only thing that literally matters is that current possession.
And those are the players and teams
that play in the finals multiple years.
It's why the generational talents
are the guys that have the multiple championships,
the multiple rings,
because they have that ability to only think about the now.
And the Warriors have that ability.
We obviously just saw a great game tonight.
So if they are able to win in San Francisco on Wednesday,
most likely then Friday's game would be very similar to tonight,
which could have gone either way.
And yes, like that.
Yeah.
You have a game seven.
It can literally happen that quick.
If there's a game six,
you better believe the Golden State Warriors
are going to be at their best
trying to push a game seven at their place.
So Brad, yeah, that's why this game is critical coming up next.
And let's not forget how bad the Warriors were on the road this year,
11-30 in the regular season,
dropped two down here.
They're really good at home.
There is no doubt about it.
We'll see if the Lakers learned a little bit from the first round.
They had that 3-1 series edge going back to Memphis.
Lost that game.
Maybe they can tighten that up a little bit.
Maybe win a game five and get a little breather.
While the Phoenix-Denver series tied at 2-2,
that has the look of a series that might go the full seven.
Just got word in my ear.
Lakers haven't lost at home since March 17th.
Wow.
It's almost two months.
It's about protecting home floor.
That's a stat right there.
Dennis Schroeder.
Love to the fans.
Yeah.
Scored 10 points and was a team high plus 10.
He's with Gieter in the locker room.
Dennis, team undefeated so far in the playoffs at home.
Just how great has this crowd been for you guys?
Crowd is everything.
They're carrying us through the game.
Gave us the energy in the fourth as well to make that big run.
And Lonnie Walker, staying ready.
Didn't play second half of the season too much.
Kept working every time.
Every single time I came to practice, I've seen him work.
And to come in the playoff game and bring that energy and scoring at the end.
It's just too professional.
He had 15 all in the fourth.
What was that like for you being out there with him?
I mean, I'm a team player.
And I always love when people succeed.
And it was one game.
And I think in Dallas, I had to get on him a little bit.
And I told him to just stay ready.
And that's the reason why I was super proud.
Because how he came out and helped us get the W is just big time.
That's a pretty great scene, right?
With all you guys going over to him after his first time having that kind of moment.
Yeah, he deserved it.
He gave us this win tonight, especially in the fourth, closing it out.
But I think the last six, seven minutes in the fourth quarter, how we played together,
defensively, scrambled.
They're a great team over there.
But we did a great job closing out.
They're the champs for a reason.
I know you can't get into the strategies of it.
But just the challenges that they pose in that half-court offense, especially.
I mean, when somebody is down on the offensive end when we shoot,
and somebody make a layup when he's on the ground,
how fast they take the ball out.
And they punish you right away.
And Steph and Clay, I mean, they're Hall of Famers.
They system how they move the ball without the ball.
And how they play together is just such unique.
And we've never seen this in the NBA.
So credit to them.
But at the end of the day, we figured it out tonight.
Got the W, and that was a big one.
Yeah, Steve Kerr joked that they play so much together,
where they do stuff sometimes they don't even know.
Dribble handoffs.
Yeah, I mean, it looks like it.
But it's always on point, you know.
And I mean, that's the reason why I say it's always great to watch them.
And it's a pleasure to play against them as well now.
And yeah, they're such a good ball club.
Yeah, I mean, they adjust it, you know.
But you're talking about AD, right?
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, the last possession, I think it was like 40 seconds on the clock.
Yeah, something like that.
Guarding Curry at the perimeter.
Staying in front of him.
Don't give him an open three.
And staying in front of him.
That's pretty special.
I don't think I did that.
Just shout out to him for that possession.
And it's just not, you know.
I mean, what he did the whole game, you know.
To give us that energy on the defensive end.
To be committed.
Chasing Curry and closing it out.
You know, with that possession, it's pretty impressive.
Yeah, I mean, it's 3-1.
But it's always first to four.
And I mean, every game is his own game.
And we got to go out in game five.
And play like we're down 0-3, you know.
And try to secure that win.
And hopefully, we get it.
You know, players and leaders like LeBron.
Over time, they also get a great sense of like,
what each guy within the team needs on different nights.
In order to get themselves going.
Or to help them get going.
And so, there are games where he's more assertive early.
And then, again, the other night,
he chose not to be so assertive early in that game.
But just as the game went on,
you know, he started to kind of put his fingerprints on to more things.
The number that only matters to him is
how many more championships he can win.
Like his legacy in terms of being the number one scorer in the history of the NBA.
He's in the top five and will be by the time his career finishes
in almost every major statistical category that we've ever measured.
Like, he's going to be up there.
So, he only defines himself by how many championships can I help my teams win.
And so, he's playing in a way that only really leads them closer to that.
He knows Anthony Davis has to really, you know,
be the guy that really kind of instigates aggressiveness and assertiveness.
And then, he finds where to fill in.
The Lakers are 7-3 through 10 playoff games without him scoring 30.
So, he's not in a hurry to try to score 30.
He's in a hurry to keep winning.
Tell you what, he's 38, but it doesn't look like it.
He had 45 minutes in that one game.
They had 43 tonight, along with A.D., who also played 43.
How important was this for the Lakers to win?
Think about this.
How crushing would it have been for them to lose
with both A.D. and LeBron playing almost the entire game?
And D. Fish, you and I were kind of chuckling
in the conference room where we watched the game.
LeBron went out with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Literally walked to the end of the bench,
and then he walked back to the scorer's table.
He didn't even sit down.
He checked himself back in.
Took about 18 seconds of a rest.
It's crazy how much they wanted this,
and how much, at his age, he keeps producing.
Not just in the points, rebounds, and assists,
but the minutes call him, too.
It's crazy.
Those 18 seconds that he walked down the bench,
he had some choice words to say to every coach he walked by.
He said, y'all must be out y'all mind.
Take me out this game right now.
I'm gonna go on back in here.
Doped out.
Just like that?
Yeah, just like that.
Pretty much.
The L.A. Lakers take a 3-1 series lead.
The defending champs are on the brink of elimination,
and if you predicted Lonnie Walker would be the hero
in the fourth quarter of this game four, you're lying.
You didn't see that coming.
He had 15, and the Lakers win the game.
Welcome in, everybody.
It's Playoff Central Live presented by AT&T 5G.
Matt Weiner.
I will set it.
Robert Ory and Sam Mitchell right there.
Wow, what a finish for the Lakers.
Some incredible shot making by Walker coming out of nowhere
off the bench.
A career-high, postseason career-high, 15 points.
The Lakers were able to get 27 from LeBron.
Anthony Davis, who was barely heard from offensively
in the fourth quarter, still had 23 on 16 points.
Austin Reeves was big tonight.
His best game of the series offensively with 21.
And some mistakes down the stretch for Golden State.
It's a lot of mistakes.
I know people are going to look at it.
Well, that's a good shot for Steph,
but this is the NBA playoffs.
You have AD on.
I know you can run a pick and roll or do something
when you get a better shot out, and for me,
their shot selection has been very poor in this series.
Everybody wants to look at Jordan Poole's shot,
and then you've got a guy like Klay.
You're not getting him a shot.
He gave him a shot down the stretch,
but this is the way Golden State plays,
but sometimes it can bite you, and tonight it did.
Yeah, I just think you just look at the mistakes.
Draymond Green, offensive rebound,
had a chance to go right back up, put in the basket,
not calling the timeout.
The bad shots over and over again that they take.
Everybody kind of did what they normally do
in terms of the Lakers dominated at the free throw line.
They hit all 20 of their attempts,
so they were plus 11 there,
even though they only hit six threes on the night.
And you see Steph Curry's evening.
He got up 30 shots for his 31 points,
so not terribly efficient.
Klay Thompson, three of nine from three-point range,
three of 11 overall, and you know.
Man, look where all his field goals were made at, though.
Yeah.
I mean, Lakers will live with that all day.
If you make, whenever I played against Steph Curry,
my whole thing with my team was make him score inside the three.
If he starts making threes, if he makes six, seven, eight threes,
you're done because it opens everything up for everybody,
but three, four, 14, you can live with that.
It's been a really interesting series for him.
They were playing him off the ball in game one.
Remember, they moved him onto the ball for game two.
Now he gets a triple-double with 14 assists here in game four,
but it's in a loss.
But it's in a loss.
It's almost like the Yokage game of the night,
and with Steph, it's like when he's giving up the ball,
I'd rather give him assists
because a lot of those assists led to two points.
And it was interesting talking about AD
because we're watching this fourth quarter play out,
and he's not getting the ball.
Two shots in the fourth quarter total, Robert.
And we're watching this.
He's not even in the action.
Hold on, man.
It ain't the players.
When Robert's in here, you got Draymond Green
playing from me to you under the basket.
All you got to do is dive in hard, eat up that space.
You hit Draymond, you're going to steal him.
You got to dunk.
Every time, if the guy's not body-to-body with you,
he's inviting that step in.
When you don't do that, Robert will tell you,
you don't want the ball.
You know, I played with some great, great, great big men.
Down the stretch right there, they're ducking in.
They're asking for the ball.
They're trying to go up, dunk on people, jump hook people.
But AD is like, he's like,
I'm just waiting to get offensive rebounds.
He goes into a,
almost like he went into a Draymond Green role
where I'm just sit back, wait, try to facilitate,
get offensive rebounds and keep it going.
You have to be aggressive in this situation
because you was scoring.
You don't know that even game theory
was going out the window.
Be aggressive.
And I think when they go back and look at film,
they're going to seize opportunities to do that.
Well, Lonnie Walker the fourth
certainly seized every opportunity he had
in that fourth quarter.
And he is with us from Los Angeles
after going six of nine,
playing every second of the fourth
and scoring a post-season career high 15 points.
Lonnie, congratulations.
Can you put into words those 12 minutes
and what it meant to you to be able to perform
and provide those needed points for your team
at this stage in the playoffs?
It meant the world to me, truly.
You know, by the grace of God, given opportunity,
I was just ready to play.
Night in, night out, I've been going to the gym.
You know, everyone's been telling me to stay ready,
Bron, coach and all of them.
And once one of them was called,
I was just locked in the entire time.
Yeah, you know, it's interesting.
It's one thing to be told to stay ready
and even have that mindset.
It's another thing to start stroking it
as confidently as you did.
When did you start feeling,
was it the first shot that went up?
When did you start feeling like
you could really impact the outcome of this game?
I mean, I'm always going to impact the game
one way or another,
whether it's defensively or offensively.
But by that first shot,
you know, all I got to see
is see the ball go on the hoop at least once
and I'm hot, honestly.
So I played with a lot of confidence.
My teammates trusted in me
and we came, we pulled up with a win.
Lonnie, Robert over here.
I know how hard it was for you to get injured
and then have these trades come in and not play.
So what was the one thing that you did
to keep yourself locked in?
I know people can always say stay ready,
but what did you do mentally and physically
to keep yourself locked in for this moment?
I stayed in the gym.
You know, I was in early,
you know, doing what I was supposed to do.
Klay Thompson, you guarded Klay Thompson a lot
when you was on the floor.
He's constantly moving without the ball.
He has a quick trigger to get rid of that thing.
What do you do specifically
when you're guarding Klay Thompson
to try not to let him get into a rhythm
and do you use your speed and quickness
to get into him to try to take away his space?
Absolutely.
You know, with the playoffs,
you know, it's a lot more grit and grind.
I'm not losing.
I'm allowed to use my physicality
and I just had to stay with him.
You know, I'm fast enough.
I'm athletic enough to be with the best of them.
And I use that to my advantage.
You know, I make sure he's shooting
a lot of twos and layers
rather than making a lot of threes.
All right, Lonnie, in terms of this stage,
this is the most consequential game
of your NBA career so far.
I know guys of your generation
are on their phones a lot, right?
I say this as an old guy.
So I'm curious if you've checked the phone yet,
if you have any idea what's on it right now
and who you're expecting to hear from
that'll mean the most to you.
My grandparents, my mother and my lady.
Those are my father.
I mean, those are my end all be all.
Other than that, I'm really not too worried
about the outside sources
because you have a bad game.
They hate you.
They love you.
They hate you again.
So I would just stay locked in,
you know, play with my teammates.
I'm gonna enjoy this one tonight,
but we got another one coming up tomorrow.
I mean, on Wednesday.
Hard to keep track.
I know.
Lonnie, last one I got for you.
You know, as a coach,
we're always telling players, stay ready.
And you know, as players,
when I play, the coach tell me that,
yada, yada, yada, yeah.
But when Darvin Ham tells you that,
what was your mental process
knowing that this is the playoffs,
knowing that your name could be called?
How did you prepare for this?
Because again, the coach tells
every player this one through 14.
I'm staying disciplined
and staying within my routine.
Other than that, man,
you know, by the grace of God,
he was giving me, you know,
the opportunity to do what I was supposed to do.
And I'm just ecstatic
to be here right now, honestly.
Incredible night.
15 points in 12 minutes on nine shots.
Nicely done, Lonnie.
Congratulations on the win.
Good luck.
Try to close out the champs.
All right, Mr. Walker.
Yes, sir.
Keep it up.
Y'all have a blessed night.
Yes, sir.
Darvin Ham has been part
of an amazing turnaround in Los Angeles.
Remember, this team was kind of
left for dead just a few months ago.
They finished seventh
in the Western Conference
and like the eighth seeded
Miami Heat on the other side
are now a win away
from their conference finals.
And Robert, you're around
this Laker team a lot during the season.
What has impressed you most about Darvin Ham?
Not only before the trades
that made this team more viable,
but since then.
I think for me is he's always
emphasized defense
and the team has always said,
OK, we're a defensive team.
We know we had the all time
leading scorer on this team.
You know, we have one of the best
big men to play this game in A.D.
But they say, you know what?
We got to play defense.
The only way we're going
to win a championship
is play defense.
And also, you notice that Darvin Ham
is not one of those coaches
that sit back and say,
this is my way or it's the highway.
He's been able to say, OK,
what are we going to do as a team?
Are we going to go this way?
It's not working.
So let's veer off and go down path B.
And it's so nice to see a first year coach
not afraid to go to not A.D.,
not LeBron, but Lonnie Walker,
Austin Reid, the hot guy.
Yeah, because you have so many guys.
No, we got to go with our big dogs.
But this guy is not that
he knows basketball.
He says, go with the hot guy,
go with the guy who got the flow right.
Or they're insecure
because it's first time
in the big chair, right?
Sam, you know what that
what that feels like
when you're a first time.
He got some players that help.
I mean, I do all this stuff
about great coaches.
If you don't have a team,
we never going to know you can go.
Sure.
You got to have players.
And what Rob Palenka did
when he got him some players,
he didn't have a bench before.
He didn't have youth.
He didn't have athleticism.
He didn't have shooting.
He didn't have defensive players.
When you look at this team,
they struggled defensively
when he got some players.
That's when you saw
the best of Darwin have.
Yeah, give him credit.
He held everything together
until Rob Palenka did his job,
made a great trade,
brought in some players.
And once he got some players,
he started trusting them.
Look how he extended the bench.
Look how he plays.
And the number one thing
Darvin Ham did this year
for the Lakers,
he got Anthony Davis to play center
and believe that he was a center
and that his best position
is that five position.
Think about it.
You've been there.
Everybody's been trying to get
A.D. to buy into being the five.
He's been fighting tooth and nail.
Darvin Ham came in and got
A.D. to understand
if he wants to win
another championship,
he has to embrace playing the five.
That's the number one
thing he's done.
You haven't heard anything
from A.D. this whole year
about him playing center.
In the past,
he complained every day.
That's the number one thing
Darvin Ham did.
Making a note.
Coaches are better with good players.
Unless you're Don Nelson.
Warriors, this was a winnable game.
Laker offense was not great
aside from Lonnie Walker
down the stretch.
But the Warriors
managed just 17 points
in that fourth quarter.
And along the way,
two of nine from three-point range
and six of their 16 turnovers
in the final 12 minutes.
What's the obvious adjustment to you
if there is one for Golden State?
I think just find some way
to get Klay involved.
And when you get Klay involved,
he's able to knock down some shots.
That means Steph is going
to get easier shots.
And also you can look at
when Draymond is up top
facilitating,
and they're having Klay do,
Steph and Klay doing all this
running around.
They're able to get more shots off
because it confuses the defense.
And the last couple of games,
I know that Steph assists
have been going up.
Yeah.
But he'd be getting the L.
So put Draymond back in that position
where Draymond is the best passer
on that team.
And he can get everybody easy shots
because that's their system.
Don't defer from your system.
This is what got you here.
Stay with it.
Doesn't that lead to more
of what we see in game one
with the face guarding
and whatnot of Steph Curry
to just try to keep the ball
out of his hands?
That's kind of the adjustment they made.
I just think if you go to state
and to Robert's point,
some kind of way Klay got to get going,
whether it's out in transition,
you got to find it.
Because what the Lakers are doing,
they can put five guys on the floor
that can switch and get up to you.
So they know Klay Thompson,
Steph Curry,
they're making them play
inside the three point line.
And they would take them
finishing over A.D.
all day long if they can.
But the number one thing is
Dovenham has done a great job
of finding the eight players
that he's playing
that can all guard perimeter guys.
And if you look at Golden State,
the biggest problem
they have right now,
they can only score one way
from the three point line.
If they're not making threes,
they really struggle
because we saw in the clip,
Draymond Green gets
the offensive rebound,
down one with 20 seconds to go.
And he don't even look at the basket.
He's got Dennis Schroeder guarding.
The first thought in his mind
was to find Klay or Steph
for a three point shot.
If you look at the threes
that Klay and Steph are getting,
we know they're great shooters,
but they're taking
some tough, tough shots.
And historically, during this run
with Steph, Klay, Dray
under Steve Kerr,
a big part of the Golden State
offense is those cuts
for easy shots, those layups.
Yes, that.
And also, you know,
if you think about the way
Looney has been playing,
he's an extra shot getter
for those guys.
And now when you lose,
sometimes coaches will be like,
OK, I need to change my lineup.
No, don't do that.
Because now you're messing
with your rotation.
You're messing with guys rhythm.
So put Looney back into the starting
line because, you know,
you almost won that first game.
You didn't.
Looney was getting extra.
Looney was.
How are you going to get a 23
rebound guy on the bench?
Yes, he's been great.
He played great in the last series.
He played great in this series.
Go back to what got you there.
And that's what I think he does do.
Because Looney, excellent rebounder.
He occupies space.
He doesn't allow AD
to really roam as much.
Tells you a little bit
about how basketball has changed as well.
Like a 20 rebound guy,
that guy's never coming out of the game.
No, but this guy got up on the bench.
