So we've got the Padres versus the Reds.
It's the first inning, runner on first, one out.
We have a line drive hit the center.
Trent Grisham comes in, puts his glove up, fakes
the runner out at first as he catches it and doubles the runner off.
And you see the little smirk here on Trent Grisham's face as he runs off
the field because he knows he got him.
So this is a really heads up play. Let's break it down.
So here we've got the ball hit the center field.
Now, what outfielders will typically do on balls that are going to drop
is that they'll put their glove up like this to fake like they're going to catch it.
And the reason they do that is because they want the runner to not just take off.
So in this situation with a runner on first, they'll put their glove up
like this to make sure that the runner can't go first to third.
You act like I'm going to catch the ball.
It's just a fake or a deke.
The ball is eventually going to fall
and the runner will only be able to make it from first to second
instead of from first to third.
So on this one, Grisham uses, I don't know if you'd call this reverse psychology.
So he puts his glove up, faking that he's going to catch the ball.
The base runner says, Oh, no, no, no, Trent.
I know you. I know you're just faking me out here.
So the runner says, You're not going to get me.
I know your tricks.
I'm going first to third on this one.
But Grisham had him the whole time because he essentially faked a fake.
So he fakes this.
Runner starts to go and he goes, I've got you right to me.
Catch. Throw.
See you later. Double up.
So you don't see the fake fake move very much.
Base runners are used to outfielders trying to deke or fake them out
because they do it a lot.
So to be able to use the fake fake
is a really nice touch that, again, I have not seen before.
And I think it really just lulled the base runner to sleep.
You're used to reading body language of outfielders as they attack balls.
And so he does sell this really well, that this ball is just going to drop in.
And I'm just giving the old fake job that I usually do.
But again, ran the perfection.
So I like it. Heads up play.
Let me know if you've seen this play before.
I don't know if I've ever seen it before where the outfielder fakes
like he's going to catch it,
knowing that the runner is going to know that you're faking.
So he's going to go.
But the whole time you knew you were going to catch it and throw him out of first base.
It's even difficult to explain.
