The Giants at home against the
St. Louis Cardinals two ancient
National League rivals time for
the Cardinals to pick up a
series opening win their 0 and
7 so far and right now it's
going to be Alex Cobb who takes
the ball for the Giants tonight
this first of four games against
the Cardinals 0 and 1 on the
year still looking for his first
win ERA fantastic two point
seven nine twenty two strikeouts
against three walks in nineteen
or the thirties but very good
new far off to a good start
hitting 280 slowly rolls this
first one to Flores and that's
how this game gets started and
Paul Goldschmidt will stand in
got him two up two down for the
Cardinals here's Nolan Gorman
slowly hit and that'll end the
inning two ground balls and a
strikeout let's see if Jordan
Montgomery can get the ball on
the ground here at Oracle Park
loves he and Jordan Montgomery
back out there great to see
Austin Slater in the batter's
box no score Giants and the
Cardinals and the three two is
driven into right center field
but moving over is Burlington
and it falls and Slater with a
wide turn and he's a board.
So here's the strata got him
with a breaking ball and
Panickers first at bat as a
walk Davis with four home runs
thirteen driven in shoots one
to right Slater throws so he's
going to get the third and the
bases are loaded.
So here's Conforto who's had six
lifetime at bats against
Montgomery and a little pop up
and Conforto will not be happy
with this.
His contrarian puts it away five
grand slam as it will before his
career.
The payoff he struck him out.
What a job by Montgomery long
inning the Giants load him up
can't break through.
We head to the second scoreless
and the Cardinals are set in
order in the second inning.
We go to the bottom of the
second nothing nothing in San
Francisco two down runner at
first Slater lines one to right
field for a base hit.
Yes goes to second he'll stop
there Slater two for two.
Welcome back slowly hit to
Edmond and that'll end the
inning.
Giants have stranded five in
this game nine up nine down for
Alex Cobb another solid inning.
Cardinals go down in order we'll
go to the bottom of the third
Giants and Cardinals nothing
nothing.
And Montgomery two quick outs he
needs a quick inning.
This one dribbled Contreras will
slip and tumble to the turf.
Good play and Montgomery does
have an easy third inning one
two three and out Cobb saved his
best fastballs for Paul
Goldschmidt.
That's a couple of them at 96 in
his first two trips to the plate
tonight in the air to right that
curling toward the corner long
run that ball is fair off the
base of the wall Goldie on his
way to second big turn there and
he's going to stop.
But can Fordo tracked it down
quickly.
There's your first Cardinal base
runner Paul Goldschmidt.
Wrapped on the ground to V.R. and
V.R. is going to throw him out.
Goldschmidt is now at third
Contreras with Goldschmidt at
third and this is hit to Davis.
Davis will shuffle and throw and
that'll end the inning.
So he has his aboard two on with
one out.
Joey Bart struck out in the
second the two to pitch.
He went around and Bart is down
on strikes for the second time
two outs another scoring chance
for them here.
This one on the ground
smothered and a throw to first
Donovan with a run saving grab
at third.
Beautiful play from the gold
Glover.
The bases are loaded now and the
top of the order is coming up.
Davis off balance.
He got him and that'll end the
inning.
And went out and combed that
into right field and the
Cardinals have a one out single.
Well they'll give Wilson
Contreras the whole right side
of the infield to play with
here.
That's one to the hard way.
VR was able to come off the bag
and then tag the runner going by
and still complete the double
play.
And it's kept this score at
nothing nothing with Montgomery
and Cobb throwing up zeros line
drive to left by Donovan.
That'll continue the inning.
He is something else.
He's had a great game
defensively and he has two of
the Cardinals five hits up the
middle and that'll do it.
Seven pitch inning for Alex
Cobb.
He has his two for two.
Last hit was a bunt down the
third baseline.
This one is Rose not in time.
Edmond got it in between her.
And that's why you run hard
right.
That's why you run hard.
You never know.
In a lot of ways Joey Bars glad
that Montgomery's out of the
game.
Line drive base hit down the
left field line.
Yes it's on the move.
Bart Diggins for two.
He's going to make it for her.
It's like it's his hamstring.
Now Peterson just got one.
He got him to chase it big first
down.
Here's Hennigar.
Get out to right.
Tagging is just Rimsky and the
Giants take the lead.
Good at bat and he had to go the
opposite way to do it.
His first RBI as a Jack comes on
a sack fly.
Davis is one for three.
High drive.
That's number five on the year
for J.D. Davis.
All right it comes with two outs
is a bone crusher.
Tommy Edmond will lead off for
St. Louis on the ground a
second.
The air will charge Alex Cobb
has just been so impressive
tonight.
Here's Nick Barr.
He's grounded out three times.
And a fly ball well hit toward
left center field that ball
carrying a long way to the wall
and miscommunication it drops
safely.
So Nick Barr will stand at
second with one out.
The one pitch to Goldschmidt is
wrapped up the middle.
Something that he has not been
doing much tonight.
That's his third strikeout is
all but he's got eight shutout
innings in the books.
Giants to the four nothing lead
is Alex Cobb goes out.
Lifted out to Conforto Davis at
third two down.
I think Giants recognize that
this day and age you just don't
see what's happening a lot right
now.
In his 12 year career he has one
shutout twenty twelve when he
was with Tampa two down in the
ninth inning the Giants ahead
for nothing.
And Cobb needs one strike more
swing and a miss the splitter
for the strikeout for the
shutout and for the complete
game and a great night for Alex
Cobb all the way around.
I mean I was going out for the
ninth and you start to hear the
crowd cheer and there's
different energy when you're
going out for the ninth to close
it out in front of the home fan.
So you need it because it's
exhausting even more so with the
pitch clock now.
But tonight it was the vintage
Cobb at his best getting the
ball on the ground again and
again and again.
