What's going on everybody? Welcome to NBA Signature Moves Part 12, Rookie Edition.
Okay everybody, I'm here with Nelson Chan from Hoopin' Life.
What it do? I'm here with Kevin Loft, a.k.a. Brickhouse Builder from Hoopin' Life.
What's brickin' y'all?
What were the biggest moves this offseason in the NBA?
The Cavs and Boston swapped IT and Kyrie Irving for each other. Crazy.
And the Cavs acquired D-Wade and D-Rose. The D's!
And OKC acquired Paul George and Carmelo Anthony.
And Houston got Chris Paul, so now there's Chris Paul and James Harden on the same team. This is crazy!
We're here to talk about the rookies. We're gonna be talking about Lonzo Ball, De'Aaron Fox, Dennis Smith Jr., Jason Tatum, and Kyle Kuzma, and Markel Fultz.
Don't you forget about Ben Simmons. Technically he's a rookie.
You guys ready?
Yep. Let's go!
And you know that we gotta talk about Lonzo Ball.
With the second pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select Lonzo Ball.
Lonzo has a pretty unorthodox shooting form.
It's ugly, a.k.a. it's ugly.
Lonzo, he swings it towards his left side and shoots it from his left side.
He actually does have a good follow through.
He kind of stands sideways and he drives all of his energy towards that right side into his shoulder.
That way he can launch it from the side.
So you're saying by aligning his body more with the basket along with his elbow, he does get more power.
Yep, yep.
He's got really small shoulders.
He's got no chest.
He was chucking up some passes in summer league that he has not done in preseason.
Those full court passes.
I haven't spotted him yet.
Time loss.
Ball! What a throw!
I haven't spotted him yet, but I'm sure he's here.
And also Lonzo deep and down!
On it goes for Lonzo.
Too expressive for Lonzo.
What's a left-handed Lonzo look like?
Yeah, there you go.
Alright, the next player that we got coming up is technically a rookie because he was hurt all of last year.
Ben Simmons.
With the first pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Ben Simmons.
What does Ben Simmons like to do, guys?
A baby hook slash floater with his off hand.
He actually shoots more off of his right hand, these little floaters, than he does his left hand.
I think he made one jumper this whole preseason.
The crazy thing is his form isn't too bad.
His form looks nice, yeah.
But the shots just aren't going in.
Something that I think you're going to see a lot this season is he's going to drive it in.
There's going to be somebody cutting through the middle, and he's going to fling it with one hand.
And it's going to be a no-look bounce pass.
Lonzo Ball and Ben Simmons, the most two-hyped rookies, are actually pass-first players.
In transition, you can't even stop him. He's, what, 240?
He's a big dude.
Your name is Brickhouse Builder, and actually Ben Simmons could be a Brickhouse Builder himself.
Can I switch characters right now?
What is it about the way Ben Simmons dribbles?
His main cross is a push cross.
Because if you're doing a push cross, and then you're throwing that body,
the small defender, he's going to have to find a way to get to your body.
Because you're turning your body, so you're kind of closing them off.
He'll get one more at the line.
Simmons has a pretty look combining that time.
That's with 27th in the league in rebounding last year.
Awkward layups by Ben Simmons.
Simmons.
Simmons to the hoop for two.
Simmons. Watch his magic.
That's the beauty of Ben Simmons.
When Ben Simmons and Lonzo Ball are on the same team during the rookie and sophomore game,
this might be what it looks like.
Alright, next up we got D'Aaron Fox.
With the fifth pick in the 2017 NBA Draft,
the Sacramento Kings select D'Aaron Fox.
Now this guy actually dropped like 39 points on Lonzo in the NCAA tournament.
Who's his NBA comparison to you guys?
John Wall 2.0 lefty style.
Aw man, like I don't know, for some reason I'm getting strong Russell Westbrook.
Alright, in this play D'Aaron Fox pushes the ball full speed,
does a between the leg cross, and a cross back,
makes his defender spin in circles, and gets the layup.
Alright, in this next play D'Aaron Fox dunks on everybody's favorite Laker,
Julius Randle.
What happens man?
Yo, pretty much D'Aaron Fox uses the screen right to left crossover,
then he goes that nasty ass in and out crossover.
Gets his defender, then Randle tries to contest.
I don't know why.
Two points, six rebounds, a couple of steals for Randle as Fox explodes.
Julius can't do anything right.
Even when he tries to goaltend, it's not even a goaltend.
I know, my god.
Next up we have the number one pick in the NBA Draft, Markel Fultz.
With the first pick in the 2017 NBA Draft,
the Philadelphia 76ers select Markel Fultz.
Yo, they say he's supposed to be like James Harden.
What do you think, Brandon Roy 2.0?
I'm still stuck on his ugly free throw.
His free throws are ugly.
He has a little bit of everything on offense,
and he's about what, 6'4", 6'5"?
He has a solid build.
He has a sleeper athleticism and scoring ability.
He kind of looks like he's sleepy when he plays.
This play, Markel Fultz does a really nice spin dribble move
into a step-back fadeaway,
but I feel like this really embodies who Markel Fultz is
because the way he kind of did it was real sleepy-like.
Yeah, Markel!
Markel kind of hunches down, he's like,
he digs into it and kind of does this.
Like a slinky.
Yeah, a slinky makes sense.
Markel sleeps with a slinky.
I feel like this rookie class
kind of has a lot of weird unorthodox forms.
If it goes in, it goes in.
That's the type of thing, right?
Does that mean Sean Marion deserves to be in this draft too?
I think Sean Marion was before his time.
All right, now it's time to talk about the highest flyer
of all the rookies right now.
You know I'm talking about Dennis Smith Jr.
With the ninth pick in the 2017 NBA Draft,
the Dallas Mavericks select Dennis Smith Jr.
What can you say about his name?
Who does he remind you guys of?
Westbrook.
Times D. Rose.
Dame Lillard?
Dame Lillard in there?
No?
Not really, not really.
Too smooth.
Okay, fine.
Irky, jerky, explosive, acrobatic.
There's one move that he was doing all summer league long,
but he has not done it in preseason.
It was this one, where he drives to the right
at about a 10-footer, he pump fakes,
pivots back, and shoots the fadeaway.
Junior inside, nice move on ball.
All I see him now is shooting jumpers,
shooting threes, and driving it in.
Do you actually shoot like Dennis Smith Jr. or what?
Dennis Smith Jr. and his baby LeBron dunk.
Kids, make sure you tie your shoelaces
so you don't have any of these silly excuses
when you can't dunk.
He's like a 6'3".
He's able to posterize taller players
because he rises so quick.
Those big guys can't even jump yet.
You're going to see him in our top ten highlights a lot.
Yeah, like this.
And the next rookie that's been talked about a lot,
Jason Tatum.
Real quick about Jason Tatum.
Who's his NBA comparison?
I would say a taller and leaner Paul Pierce.
They're both kind of slow,
but they know how to get to the right spot.
Jump shot fadeaway is kind of like a tweener
between Dirk and some say Kobe.
I'm going to have to agree with Paul Pierce.
I think Jason Tatum plays like Danny Granger.
Okay, yeah.
You see that?
Body type-wise, kind of tall, slim shooter.
During summer league,
he dropped like 20 points off of fadeaways on jazz.
He did.
He was lighting them up with just...
He was shimmying on that.
Let me show you some Tatum moves.
Final game of summer league.
Dude, that was in the cylinder.
Beautiful Tatum.
Oh my goodness.
And last but not least,
the last rookie we are covering
with the 27th pick to the Los Angeles Lakers
with a name that you will not forget,
but you probably didn't know before this,
Kyle Kuzma.
Kuz!
With the 27th pick in the 2017 NBA draft,
the Brooklyn Nets select Kyle Kuzma.
Him and Jason Tatum, in my opinion, kind of similar.
Yeah.
Both 6'9", smooth jumper.
They both like that spin
and that one-hand kind of awkward floater.
I actually think Kyle Kuzma,
I think he's a better three-point shooter than Jason Tatum.
Yeah, he is, for sure.
And he actually likes to go into contact more.
He wears his arm sleeve on his shooting arm.
Let's do it.
Okay, everybody, it's getting really late
and the sun is going down,
but thank you so much for watching
that NBA Signature Moves Part 12, 2018
Rookie Preview Edition.
Man, I hope that was really helpful, guys.
I hope that we were able to shed some insight
on these rookies.
Yo, what do you have to say
about the overall rookie class this year?
Lots of potential waiting to be fulfilled
or to disappoint.
The biggest hyped-up draft class.
Definitely a lot of unorthodox moves out there,
but I think that just goes to show you
how the NBA and gameplay is changing.
Shout-out to Nelson.
Shout-out to Kevin.
In the comments below,
give us your rookie predictions.
Thank you so much for watching that video,
and until next time, we out.
Peace.
