CDC Vital Signs: Eliminating HIV as a Global Public Health Threat

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, began efforts to expand access to treatment for people living with HIV in 2004, one year after its inception. Since then, the number of people with HIV worldwide receiving lifesaving treatment through PEPFAR surged from just 66,500 in 2004 to more than 20 million people in 2022. Through PEPFAR and CDC, the United States aims to eliminate HIV as a global public health threat by 2030.
