Monteriggioni is situated between Siena and Colle di Val d'Elsa, surrounded by a fortified wall, it is probably the best preserved medieval city in Italy.
The stone defensive wall is over 500 m long, 10 m high, the city has 14 towers erected on a square plan and about 20 m high.
Monteriggioni was built in 1213 as a fortress. It protected Siena from the attacks of Florence and Volterra, and remained unconquered for over 300 years. It capitulated only in 1554 as a result of the betrayal of the garrison commander.
The biggest attraction of the town are the already mentioned defensive walls, perfectly preserved and made available to visitors. From the top there are beautiful views of the surrounding hills and vineyards.
