The Final Four of the NCAA men's basketball tournament tips off on Saturday with Florida Atlantic taking on San Diego State and UConn facing off against Miami. CBSSports.com college sports writer David Cobb joined Vladimir Duthiers and Anne-Marie Green to discuss the atmosphere surrounding the games, parity in college basketball and who could take home the national championship.
The men's final four tips off in Houston tomorrow night with the
convergence with rather coverage. I don't know what I'm talking about. It's already a hairy Friday.
It's madness. Yes, it is madness with coverage on CBS and Paramount Plus.
Nine-seated Florida Atlantic plays San Diego State and Miami and UConn battle
for a top spot in the national championship game on Monday. You know
what's really crazy is my cat, Monk, picks UConn to take it all. He's very
smart. What if he's smart? Like Paul the octopus for the World Cup.
You might be in one thing. David, because he's not that smart other than that.
David Kopp joins us now. He is a college sports writer for CBSSports.com.
Thanks for joining us. You're in Houston covering the games. What's the
atmosphere like surrounding the weekend? Yeah, I actually think convergence is a
pretty good word if you think about it. We've got San Diego State represented.
Two schools from South Florida and then a school from UConn. So it really is a
convergence from three of the nation's four corners here in the heart of the
country in Houston and you're already starting to see those fan bases
represented all over town. This is a very spread out city, but I've been surprised
by the amount of saturation that the Final Four seems to have here. For
example, we're 15 minutes away from the arena at the CBS Hotel here and there's
an official Final Four merchandise shop at this hotel and they warn you when you
check in. We are going to be at capacity this weekend, so please be patient with
the elevators and I sense that that's probably the case all around this city
when you consider that there will be in the neighborhood of 70,000 fans both
Saturday and Monday at NRG Stadium. So this is one of the lowest seated Final
Fours in recent memory. Let's talk about that parody. Is it good for
college basketball? I think in the long run it is. Now in the short run if you're
somebody who really likes to monitor it based off of TV ratings or social media
interest, maybe you would like to have Duke or Kansas like we did last season,
North Carolina, Villanova, but I think in the long run to grow interest in the
game of college basketball it's so important to have some of those other
brands represented. It's been a long time since Florida or South Florida has had a
team in the Final Four, so there's a new generation of college basketball fans in
that area of the country who will fall in love with the game this weekend and
San Diego State another example. It's been a long, long time since a national
champion has emerged from California and especially one not named UCLA, so I think
in the short term maybe it's not the most appealing Final Four, but hopefully
in the long run we'll look back and say you know what that was
good for the game. So now comes the time where I ask you to make a prediction. The
national championship game is on Monday. Do you agree with my cat that UConn will
be the last team standing? Or do you have any predictions at all? I do agree with
your cat actually. I think UConn's the best team left in this field. They'll
have their hands full though. That's my biggest wish for this Final Four is that
we get good games. If you get good classic games that come down to the wire,
it doesn't matter who's playing. They'll go down in history for being
close, for being dramatic, and for bringing what March Madness really does
provide us. Even though you know this first round of Final Four games will be
played on April the 1st, but I like UConn. They've got a great tandem of big men,
they can really shoot the three-pointer well, and they've got a great history. And
I know history doesn't win you games in the present, but I think there's
something to be said for the name across the front of the jersey when you get to
a stage like the Final Four. And those guys know that there have been others
who have worn that jersey before them who have cut down the nets when it's all
said and done. All right, David Cobb. Appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you guys.
