Hey everyone! We've invited back Mia from Asian Beauty Secrets.
Hi!
And we're doing a sequel to Old Wives Tales
and we pulled a lot from your comments.
So let's see what you guys have said.
So Jun Yin said,
My mum said everything under the moon including,
and I'm quoting from her,
eat all the rice in your bowl or you'll marry an ugly woman.
Or they switch it up and say
if you don't eat all your rice the thunder god will kick you.
Of course I believed them back then.
They probably say a little bit more like
each grain of rice is like a wart or a pimple on your spouse's face.
Yeah.
That's what they told me.
I think it's scarier for me if you say it's gonna be on my face.
So you don't care if your husband has like...
Because if someone else had it then I can fix it for them, you know.
Because obviously I'm a beautician so I can be like,
let me fix your face.
If it's on me it's really difficult.
So you can't fix your own face?
I can but it's almost like a doctor.
You don't operate on yourself.
Kanazono Hikari.
My mum once told me I can't wash my hair
when I'm having heavy flow during my period.
My mum explained that to me one time.
It's not the fact that you can't wash your hair, you can.
It's the risk of your hair being wet and you didn't blow dry it.
Because then the wind goes into your head.
But that would be the same deal
whether or not you have your heavy flow.
No, because I told you, like I said,
the during of your period, that's when you're the weakest.
Oh, the most vulnerable.
Yeah, exactly.
I think that's why she just basically,
your mum avoided having to explain the whole thing to you,
just said don't wash your hair full stop.
That's when you're like, yep,
in your entire life you're like,
okay, sorry, this week I cannot wash my hair.
So you just have to put up with it.
Once a month I'm going to stink.
But you know, whatever.
Actually, this reminds me of something else.
You know how for Chinese women,
a lot of them after giving birth,
for one month they're not allowed to go out,
they're not allowed to shower,
they're not allowed to eat certain foods.
So that is because apparently you don't want anything,
because you just had a major thing happen to your body,
so you don't want any of the cold or wind
or anything go into your body
and that would cause problems later.
In the future, yeah.
And by wash, no showering,
all they can do is wipe, right?
Yeah.
Wipe.
That's so gross though.
You think about it, you just gave birth.
So this is obviously passed down from generations before
that if you actually look after yourself during that month,
you can actually heal illnesses that you had in the past.
Basically it's like a restart button.
You can rejuvenate and restart.
It's all fresh, like a new person.
No showering.
I'm not sure about the showering though,
but that still gets me,
because you're just like,
I guess wiping is good?
No, it's not good enough.
That's why they have short hair,
because then they don't have to wash it.
No, but it's not the hair,
it's other things, you know?
I think other parts you can wipe,
but wiping your hair,
really, is that going to be enough?
I guess you just need a lot of dry shampoo.
Oh, that's right.
Yeah, just buy them in bulk.
In that month, just pat it on.
Baby powder works too,
but you're not going to see anybody,
so who cares, right?
I don't know how to explain it to my friends.
Ever since I was a kid,
I had to drink bitter tea,
like the herbal tea,
because my parents would be like,
oh, you also eat hay,
you ate so many chips,
you ate so much junk food and pizza and stuff,
so you need to drink a bitter tea now.
Basically, it's all about the yin and the yang,
the balance between the cold
and the hot air in your body.
So, certain foods are deemed hot,
and some foods are deemed cold,
to help you balance out,
especially in summer, it is hot,
like the heat, physically it is hot,
so your body overheats,
so that's why you need to eat cold things
to cool you down,
otherwise if you overheat,
it's like a machinery,
if you overheat,
it's going to crash and burn.
For females, because we are already yin,
if you eat too much liang,
it's actually bad for your health.
Yeah, so it's not, there's a balance,
you can't go like,
oh yeah, so if I'm hot,
I have to have so much liang,
but if you're too liang,
you can't be too, ugh, so much.
But there are symptoms,
that you can tell,
like, I think for hay,
your tongue will have red spots,
and you'll have a sore throat,
or you'll bite your cheek,
like things like that,
or you'll have a lot of eye poop.
Yeah, like yellow eye poop,
means you have heat in your body.
So, when you're too cold,
you have this white patch on your tongue.
Oh yeah?
It's like shizhen.
Okay.
Yeah, things like that,
and also you'll suffer from stomach aches,
especially in your upper stomach area.
Okay.
Yeah, also if you don't sleep enough,
you'll get yithei.
I don't know why,
but apparently that is...
Because your body is actually working overtime
to compensate for you.
Ah, see, see, see,
that's why we need you here
to explain stuff.
If you know anything else about yithei,
why don't you let us know,
because this is something
that a lot of Chinese people
find it hard to explain.
Especially to their Western friends,
because you're like,
oh, that's too much heat.
So, Jack Darren said,
my grandparents used to tell me that
if I swallowed the seeds of any fruit,
say watermelon seeds, for instance,
I'll grow a watermelon tree
out of my head the next day.
LOL.
Actually, I think my parents told me that too.
I think just to, like, troll us.
I think that what they do is
they're trying to explain to you medically,
but they can't because
you won't be able to understand it.
So what they're trying to say is
don't swallow seeds because
they cannot be digested,
which means if you swallow things
that are putting more stress
on your digestive system,
then you're actually damaging your, like,
your stomach lining and things like that.
That's why it's hard for them to tell you,
oh, you cannot swallow seeds
because it's going to break
your stomach lining
and then you're going to have
future problems when you get old.
Kids are not going to listen to that.
Is it true?
It's true.
Because seeds are not something
that your stomach can digest.
That's why whatever seeds you swallow,
it will come out the other way,
like, as how it is.
No, that's just their scare tactic.
That's some of the comments
we picked out,
but we actually have,
know some other ones
that we've heard of.
So these are the ones.
You will have nightmares
if you sleep with your hands
on your chest.
I think the chest is because
you're adding pressure
onto your heart,
which means your heart
is not functioning
at its, you know,
normal rate
or the normal steady pace.
Therefore, it's going to be,
it's going to, like,
interrupt your brain functioning.
Therefore, it causes you
to have, like, weird dreams.
I have other dreams,
like, if I need to go
to the bathroom,
and then in my dream,
I'm going to the bathroom.
That's really, really dangerous
because you will pee yourself.
But every single time,
I'm like, crap,
I need to get out.
Point taken.
Yeah.
I need to get out.
You need to get out.
See what I'm saying?
So these are all related.
You should try sleeping
with a finger in your nose
and see if you can have
some weird dream like that.
What?
Scare someone during a hiccup
and we'll make it go away.
Your diaphragm,
I don't know.
Let's do it again.
No, I think it's
when you're scared,
you gasp,
and then when you gasp,
you actually skip
a breathing pattern,
like a breathing step.
So it's actually resetting
your diaphragm that way.
Makes more sense then.
Yeah.
That's why if you can't
scare yourself
or be scared by somebody,
they tell you
to hold your breath
for, like, over 20 seconds
because that's, like,
a whole, not 20 seconds,
like, a whole minute
or something.
That's a long time.
Like, a long time
because you won't...
You're gonna die.
You're not gonna die.
My auntie told me
that you should drink water
upside down.
What?
It's gonna come off your nose.
No, no, like,
I will, like, bend, like,
you know,
and then drink the water.
It works.
As weird as it sounds
and, you know,
you almost choke,
I think that's
why it works.
Because you choked.
Okay, so next one is
Yeah, it's true.
Yeah, but it's not really,
like, I don't think
it's, like, anything
that you can explain.
It's just a pun.
I guess if you cut it
then you fin,
like, you fin the share.
You're sharing the li.
So if you want
to break up with somebody,
you can share
the pear with them.
That is such a...
That is such a subtle way
to break up.
You go up to him and say,
hey, you want some pear?
Okay, alright, bye.
He's like, what, why?
He's like, we just fin li.
That's a good one.
We should just totally...
That should be the new
break up.
Yeah, we just fin li.
Yeah, exactly.
That's pretty funny.
The last one is
For wedding,
because it's a couple-y thing,
so you want it to be double.
Everything has to be,
you know, double.
Like, two, four, six, eight.
But I think nine
is also a good number
because it means, like, forever.
Yeah.
Well, I don't mind
if you give me, like,
nine, nine, nine, nine.
Nine.
Nine, nine, nine.
Yeah, but for, like,
funeral and things like that,
I think they prefer you
to give them, like,
an odd number
because it's for one person
to depart.
