Would you believe that coffee could actually be good for you?
For hundreds of years coffee has been the favorite beverage for just about every culture around the world. Some enjoy it first thing in the morning with breakfast and some need it just to wake up. Some enjoy it socially with friends and while others use it to keep their mind sharp and alert. Many of you have even have been taught to believe it can even "stunt your growth."
BUT...have you ever thought of coffee actually being HEALTHY for you??? Not until now. In this video I will show you the 9 surprising health benefits of coffee that you would never imagine.
Yes, you can enjoy your coffee and feel good about it!
Hey guys, hello and welcome to Total Health with Dr. Nick. Today I want to talk to you about one of my
favorite topics and that is coffee, the nine health benefits of drinking coffee. And I know
you're probably thinking, well wait a minute, I've been told coffee is bad for me. Well guys,
that is one of the furthest things from the truth. In fact, my daughter yesterday said to me, she
goes, daddy doesn't coffee stunt your growth? And I said, no honey, that's not a, that's not a truth,
that's an old wife's tale. But anyway, coffee's got some amazing health benefits. So in this video,
I'm going to be talking to you about the nine health benefits of coffee.
And I want you to feel good about it. I want you to feel good about drinking coffee,
because I'll tell you what, this little bean that you see, the coffee is probably one of the,
the most amazing drinks, beverages to drink because of all the health benefits. But too,
it makes you feel good. You feel good when you drink coffee. So I want you to feel even better
about your coffee today. And guys, if you like this video, please like it, share it, subscribe
and comment. Give me your comments. Let me know what you think. Anyway, let's dive on in. So
number one, coffee is anti-aging. That's right. You live longer drinking coffee. So studies have
been done. In fact, a couple of large studies done with 700,000 people. So this is a big study,
said this, it was published in the annals of medicine, July, 2017. And they found
that they looked at roughly 700,000 people from different cultures, different backgrounds,
different ethnicities. And they found that drinking coffee was linked to a lower risk of
death. So the first study, what that showed was this, non-white populations found drinking two
to four cups of coffee had translated into a 18% lower risk of death during the study.
So that's right. By drinking coffee, it actually added years onto your life because it lowered
your mortality. In the second study, actually, let me go back to the first one real quick.
Drinking more coffee appeared to lower the chances of dying from cancer, from heart disease,
from stroke, kidney disease, diabetes, and chronic lower respiratory disease. So yes,
coffee is beneficial at lowering your mortality rates, helping you live longer, but also preventing
many of the different diseases that we see today in our societies all over the world.
Second study said this, they looked at people living in 10 European countries, finding that
the top coffee drinkers were 25% less likely to die during a 16-year study compared to non-coffee
drinkers. So once again, major studies here, 700,000 people in this study proved that drinking
coffee actually helped you to live longer. Number two, and we see this all the time,
is fat burning. In fact, if you look at most of the energy drinks today or fat burning drinks,
they all contain caffeine in it. So caffeine has been linked to fat burning because it basically
raises your metabolic rate, maximizing your ability to burn fat. So like I said, guys,
so many times we go to the gym now, I'm drinking a coffee before I go there, usually black.
Sometimes it just has a little bit of a sweetener in it, but I feel great during my workouts. It
elevates the workouts to higher levels, and we're going to be talking about that in just a moment
as one of the other health benefits with endurance and productivity. So number three,
I tell you, you never would have thought of coffee as an antioxidant, but it is one of the best. In
fact, unfortunately, because of the standard American diet or the SAD diet, coffee makes up
about 70% of your antioxidants here in America. So guys, because we eat so poorly, we're having
to rely on coffee now as one of our major sources of antioxidants, but it is a good one. Research
shows that the average cup of coffee may contain more polyphenol, antioxidants, than cocoa, green
tea, black, and herbal teas. And some of those are very well known to have huge amounts of
antioxidants, especially your black tea, your green tea, your herbal teas, very high in
antioxidants. And to think that coffee pars up with that and does even better. Two of the key
compounds responsible for coffee's health benefits are chlorogenic and caffeic acid, which coffee
beans are the best source from in the world. So these two major antioxidants, coffee beans, just
happen to be the highest and best source for these two antioxidants. Coffee has also been shown to
increase antioxidant load in the body that we call plasma antioxidant capacity. So once again,
guys, it will start to actually increase the amount of antioxidants that are in your circulating
blood system. Also, caffeine found in coffee beans has been shown to act as a safeguard
against malignant cells. So it actually acts as a safeguard by modulating these detoxifying
enzymes. So it could actually help prevent cancer, another great benefit of coffee. In fact, a 2017
study found that frequent coffee drinkers were at an 18 percent decreased risk for cancer.
So with cancer being one of the top two disease killers in our society, isn't it great to know
that coffee can actually help benefit by fighting cancer by preventing malignant cell growth? Now,
I'm not saying it's the only thing. That doesn't mean you go out and just trash your body and have
a bad diet and don't do all the other things that are important to prevent cancer. But at least you
know coffee is on your side, so you don't have to worry about being against you. Next, coffee is one
of the leading contributors of disease-fighting antioxidants in the American diet. As I said,
70 percent of your antioxidants are coming from coffee in our sad American diet. Because it
reduces inflammation, which is the root cause of many diseases, research shows that coffee is now
being linked to lowering or helping with the following benefits of improved heart health,
okay? Cancer protection, diabetes protection, fights depression, helps with asthma, and so
much more. So a major disease fighter, because of the fact that coffee and the caffeine can help
reduce inflammation in a body, it helps actually prevent many of the different diseases that we see
in our standard American diet or American society today. Moving on to number four,
and that is helps brain function and prevents cognitive decline. So it actually can help your
brain, and you know that because you feel good when you drink coffee. You drink coffee, you get
that buzz, and depending on the type of roast, you can get more or less of a buzz. Turns out that
the darker the roast actually has less caffeine in it, so that might be something to think about
for all you French press roasters out there, or guys who like to drink really the hardcore
dark coffees. Evidence exists that beneficial antioxidants in coffee may protect against
Parkinson's disease, which is once again a major brain disease we see today, along with Alzheimer's,
and acting as a natural Alzheimer's disease treatment. So once again it helps with Alzheimer's
and Parkinson's. In animal studies, mice given caffeine in their drinking water for young
adulthood into their older age showed protection against memory impairment and lowered brain
levels of the abnormal protein amyloid protein, and that's one of the things we see with Alzheimer's
is these amyloid proteins, these plaques that are inside the brain, so it shows that caffeine and
coffee are actually beneficial to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. So keep that in mind,
no pun intended. Anti-depression, another thing with dealing with the mind, and we know that you
drink, you feel good after drinking coffee. In fact, the caffeine that's in it, my wife has a sign
in our house, it's like a little plaque on the wall that says something like, you know, doesn't
matter what the question is, chocolate is the answer, you know. So anyway, caffeine helps with
that. Anti-depressant, 2011 Harvard study showed that women who drank four or more cups per day
had a 20% lower risk of depression and were 53% less likely to commit suicide.
That is huge, guys, because ladies suffer from depression a lot because of different hormone
imbalances, especially after childbirth, the hormones are fluctuating so much, especially when
they go into the menopausal years, a lot of hormone fluctuations, and it turns out that coffee is
actually very good for that. And here's the thing too, many of us think, well, maybe it's just one
or two cups a day, but in a lot of this research that I've been going through, they're saying you
could drink as much as six cups a day. Now, I typically have about three, I like one in the
morning, one in the noon when I go in for lunch, and one in dinner. So that's about it for me,
sometimes in between, if I'm going to go work out, but you can have as much as six cups a day,
they're saying. A similar study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, women who drank two to three
cups of coffee per day were less likely to be depressed while also receiving, while also having
a decreased risk of acquiring depression. So once again, two different studies showing how
beneficial coffee is for depression. Number six, number six is increased endurance and physical
performance. Studies show that coffee increases alertness, and we all know this. How many times
do guys go into any type of sporting event where it requires this type of sharp focus, or physical
endurance, or stamina, or quickness, acceleration, and you maybe have some coffee before you go out?
A lot of guys are using coffee as one of their secret weapons before they work out, so they go
in and have a, either walk in with a coffee, or they'll have a black coffee or something on the
way to the gym. That's one of the things I like to do. 2013 report published by the School of Sport
and Exercise Science at the University of Birmingham found that athletic performance times
were significantly faster among adult men who drank caffeine drinks and coffee prior to their
exercising. So once again, the benefits of coffee also increased endurance and physical performance.
Number seven, heart health. Okay, heart health and preventing cardiovascular disease.
Turns out, guys, that recent studies have shown that consuming three to four cups of caffeinated
or decaffeinated coffee, so it doesn't even have to be, you know, coffee with caffeine in it,
could even be decaffeinated coffee in this case, reduced cardiovascular related death by 19%.
That is significant. That's almost, that's like, you know, that's a huge amount of people,
that's one out of five people roughly, that are benefiting from cardiovascular disease or
avoiding it by just drinking coffee. And cardiovascular disease by 15% compared to
non-consuming caffeine at all. Also, unfiltered coffee, and I'm not exactly sure what that means,
but I'm sure it means that you're getting maybe some of the grinds in it or some of the,
you know, a lot of times when you make certain coffees, you'll see a lot of that. It's almost
like a, not a powder at the bottom, but almost like a residue at the bottom of the cup. So maybe
that's what they're referring to here. Unfiltered coffee is a significant source of, and I don't
know if I'm pronouncing some of these right, cafestol and coagulant antioxidants, which have
been implicated in cholesterol balancing effects of coffee. So those of you out there who are
concerned about your cholesterol levels, which go back and look at some of my previous videos,
cholesterol is not as big an issue as you think. In fact, it's very healthy for you. It is also
an antioxidant and it's made up in your brain. So you've got a lot of cholesterol in your brain,
very, very necessary. But if you are concerned about your cholesterol levels,
coffee could be one of the answers too. Look into that and maybe it'll help to balance your
cholesterol levels. Also, in addition, coffee intake is associated with lower risk of heart
failure and stroke and arrhythmia. Now, even though sometimes people have those jitters,
that's not an arrhythmia, that's just muscle tension. That's all it is is muscle twitching
that's going on. But coffee has been beneficial for, as I said, heart failure, stroke, and heart
arrhythmias. One Dutch study showed that people who drank two to four cups of coffee daily,
it lowered the risk of heart disease once again. It's this 20% number, guys, 20%, 19%.
One out of five people can be helped by drinking coffee. The benefits of coffee for heart disease
are fantastic, or preventing it, I should say. Number eight, okay, so we have two more,
but so far they've been good. Number eight may even help prevent diabetes. Who would have thought?
Who would have thought drinking coffee could actually benefit diabetes? But what it's saying
is this, there's a good deal of evidence that drinking coffee, now here it says six or more
cups a day, could significantly lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. According to a nurse's health
study, two or three cups a day often can help lower the incidence of type 2 diabetes and decrease
gallstone formation. So another study has believed that the chlorogenic acid, the same antioxidant
that provides cancer-reducing benefits, might also reduce, and I think this is the key to where
it's showing how it helps benefit the diabetes even more, it helps to reduce the absorption of
glucose from sugary and high-carbohydrate foods. I think that's it right in a nutshell right there.
Because it can help reduce the absorption of the sugar or the glucose from these sugary foods and
that helps to keep your blood sugar down. Number nine helps protect the liver. Several studies
consistently show that coffee drinkers have a reduced risk of abnormal liver functional tests.
Okay, so it's beneficial to helping the liver. A study published in the Archives of Internal
Medicine shows that coffee may protect against alcoholic liver disease. Now isn't that fantastic?
Because so many people, unfortunately in many of our cultures and societies, do drink a lot. So
wouldn't this be great if drinking coffee along with it, maybe not at the same time, you're not
doing both, but drinking coffee along with it helps benefit to where you can help protect yourself
from alcohol liver disease. So guys, I hope this information was good for you. I hope you got a lot
out of it. I hope you feel better about drinking your coffee in the morning and your afternoon or
your night, whatever it may be. It will not stunt your growth. Vittoria, my daughter, who thinks that.
But coffee's actually got a lot of health benefits. Now I'm not telling you to drink it all day long
like as if it's your only source of liquids, but it could be added to your diet to alert mental
alertness for liver function, for heart function, for antioxidant properties, to reduce other types
of diseases, you name it. Fat-burning coffee can be the answer. So guys, I want you to feel good
about drinking your coffee. If you like this information, please, please, please like it, share
