Good afternoon, everybody, welcome back to Old Trafford,
where the players are now out on the field of play.
Manchester United led out by Bruno Fernandes,
and Southampton, of course, by James Ward-Prowse.
Live on BBC Radio, Solon to Old Trafford on a cloudy, grey but mild afternoon,
thankfully, in Manchester, and Saints have survived the first 15, 16 minutes of the game,
but Rashford's through again, saved by Bizuno as he shoots from a narrow angle low to his left.
Just out of nothing, almost, first real save that Bizuno's had to make,
comes after 16 minutes, and it was just too easy, again it's down that left-hand side,
and Rashford from a narrow angle, tried to poke it past him,
but it's just a nice one-two between Rashford and Fernandes.
Now Alcaraz has made good space, midway inside the United half,
he's still going, he tried to shoot, might have hit his own foot,
and then the clearance from Wan-Bissaka is poor,
Ripero on the left, chips into the six-yard area,
Wilcox header, brilliantly tipped over by De Gea,
that's the best action of the game so far in the 24th minute,
and Saints almost took the lead, denied by the acrobatics of David De Gea,
great cross from the left, Walcott doing what a winger should do,
coming off the right-hand side, he met the cross,
and De Gea's save was fantastic over the top.
Now, Saints, just thanks to Shea Adams, keep ball outside their own penalty area,
Alcaraz's first touch is tremendous, away from Martinez,
that all-Argentinian battle, he's warming up nicely,
he's got the pace behind Wan-Bissaka, he's in the box,
he shoots, it's blocked by Varane, who got back fantastically.
That was a great opening for Southampton, lovely work play
between Alcaraz and Suleymano, who did nothing wrong,
but you've got to give credit to Raphael Varane for getting back to block the shot.
There's certainly no-one else near him, as Bela Kociman made a mess of that,
and that ball back for Alcaraz, there's a foul against Casemiro,
Alcaraz is down, Casemiro will say he got the ball,
Alcaraz is rolling around, the card's coming out from Anthony Taylor, it's yellow.
Our VAR's having a look, which is good, everybody,
because I don't think that's a very pretty tackle, I think he's stood to ruck,
serious foul play, and I think Anthony Taylor needs to make a decision here,
he's had a look, the referee's jogging back over halfway,
this is a massive moment here at Old Trafford, Alcaraz getting some treatment,
here comes the VAR decision, the hand goes into the pocket,
and Casemiro is going to be sent off for a serious foul play on Carlos Alcaraz.
An over-the-top tackle, with his foot going over the top of the ball,
studs onto Alcaraz's shin, James Ward-Prowse as a consequence of that tackle,
he's lining up a free kick here, in front of the Stretford end,
he's about ten yards outside the box, I would say it's 28 yards out,
could this be the moment where he gets to match Beckham's record against De Gea?
Five-man wall, he looks up, right-footed, it dips, oh!
And it goes wide because it got a flick off the wall,
and I think it spun away, and De Gea was absolutely rooted by the one post.
Here it's nil-nil, but United have a chance with ten men
before the break with a free kick out on this right-hand side,
five yards from the penalty area,
Fernandes right-footed, floats it into the heart of the back post,
and in the end, somehow Saints get it away, was it the defender, was it Pizunu?
But it was a wicked cross from Fernandes,
and Pizunu got down at his near post to deny Varane,
and United pressuring with the ten men.
I don't know how many passes this is, Joe Tesson,
but if this ends up going in the back of the net,
it's going to be one of the goals of the season,
this must be nearly 40 passes Saints have made,
and then Bela Kocsap, who is liable,
I still think Solis is a better option on the left side of the two,
but there we go, as Walker-Peters gets past Rashford into the box,
pulls it back, and it has gone off the play and it's been cleared off the line!
It was almost an own goal, Wan-Bissaka clears it off the line in the 49th minute,
after that enormously long period of possession.
And Varane plays a little ball into Fernandes, he's got two or three players around him,
Labier is going to dispossess him, he does, did brilliantly,
and then he couldn't quite find Walcott but he was fouled.
Bruno Fernandes is going to moan again, what a surprise.
The game ticks past 53 minutes, so we're in the 54th minute.
He's scored two against De Gea, one at home,
one away here this month, four years ago.
He's one behind United icon David Beckham.
James Ward-Prowse from 26 yards,
right footed, it skims the crossbar and goes behind for a goal kick,
and De Gea didn't move an inch,
and Ward-Prowse is on his knees with his hands on his face,
almost praying to have that moment again, because he completely did De Gea.
No, I agree, but he's dealt with it so far, so fair play to Morgan Peterson.
That's a good ball from Labier, over the top, down the left,
and Perrault had stayed high and now he runs into space,
collects it before it goes out, faced by Wan-Bissaka,
finds Salamane, lovely dummy, Salamane comes inside,
he's brought down, he's still trying to go!
And he's put it behind, and in the end,
the referee may well have given a free kick to United,
it's certainly a goal kick if it's not a free kick.
Luke Shaw left-footed with the outswinging and shearing corner,
and headed away by Bednarek, nodded down by Anthony,
Wan-Bissaka takes it, and now Sainz can break,
and if he's just played forward to Walcott he's through,
and Walcott's coming down the centre of the pitch,
Martinez trying to get there, Walcott in the penalty area,
saved by De Gea, flipping his left hand up,
and that was a massive opportunity.
And it's almost like the world slowed down for Theo Walcott
as he approached the United box,
and in the end his shot was rather hit stumbling and scuffed,
and it allowed De Gea to get a left hand up.
Fernandes, this is where they're a danger,
when they work these little triangles on the edge of the box
and try to get a man in, and they're doing it again with Luke Shaw,
skips inside, Stuart Armstrong, back to Fernandes,
might try the shot, he does!
Oh, my goodness me.
This is one heck of a 0-0.
How is it still goalless?
We're into the final quarter, it's 0-0,
the 11 men of Southampton pressing,
United still dangerous on the break,
and they've come as close as saints to scoring,
I suppose that is as close as the off the line from Wan-Bissaka,
Fernandes hitting the post.
But it's an unbelievable game into the final quarter,
the corner taken short, United are slow,
Walker-Peters hits the post!
He's drilled it from 20 yards,
it's curled back into the back post over Walcott,
and it'll go behind for a goal kick.
But United weren't switched on from the corner,
Ward-Prowse took it short to Walker-Peters,
and he has lashed it against the post from 20 yards,
both sides hit the post within the space of a minute or so,
and that was so close to Saints taking the lead.
Ball in, by United, cleared by Saints,
cleared again by Lavia, now is the one last chance.
Mara, should Luke Shaw's got more...
Oh, dearie me.
Dearie me, that's a terrible challenge from Luke Shaw,
who then kicks the ball away, and I'm not being funny, everybody,
because I get on well with Luke,
that should be a yellow card for the most horrendous professional kick.
Here comes Ward-Prowse with a free kick from near the halfway line,
looking for big honour at you, Harry Maguire heads it,
and that's it.
Saints haven't managed to win against ten men for the last hour or so,
they haven't penetrated Manchester United's defence.
It's another clean sheet, though, for Ruben Seles' side,
that's three in the last four games,
the draw to go with the two wins.
Lots of good qualities, even when it was 11-on-11,
they were competitive with United in that first 30-odd minutes of the game,
and really were positive and well-patterned in their play.
They didn't take advantage of the extra man in the second half,
but they leave here with something at the start of a very big week.
