The Øresund Bridge: Connecting Sweden and Denmark
The Øresund Bridge is a combined railway and motorway bridge-tunnel across the Øresund strait, connecting Copenhagen, Denmark, with the Swedish city of Malmö. The bridge-tunnel was opened on July 1, 2000, and it is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe.
The bridge consists of two parts: the bridge itself, which is a 7.8 km (4.8 mi) long cable-stayed bridge, and the Øresund Tunnel, a 4 km (2.5 mi) long immersed tube tunnel. The bridge-tunnel system stretches a total of 16.4 km (10.2 mi) and has a maximum depth of 57 meters (187 ft) below sea level.
The Øresund Bridge has become an iconic landmark of the Øresund region and has significantly facilitated transportation and communication between Denmark and Sweden. The bridge has also been a major driver of economic growth and development in the region, making it easier for businesses to expand their operations and for people to live and work in different countries.
