AL-UKHAIDIR FORTRESS : 1,300 YEARS OLD ! IRAQ

This was all taken on my I phone as my batteries died!!
After aout an hours drive from Karbala on some really rough roads! Finally made it to this magnificent fortress! I had a tour company take me here as i wouldnt have been able to make it on my own, but its size was mind blowing!
the outer walls are 10.5m high and 4.5m thick...the outer walls contain a passage that allowed archers to move around inside the walls and fire at the enemy forces!
Built in 775 AD....in a defensive style and represents Abbasid Architecture.
maybe one of the best places ive visited like this....although it could use a little work on it, but the potential for tourism is huge with places like this!! Definitely worth a vist .. I didn’t get to see the church 5km away as It was getting dark .. but would love to go back now that I know more about Its history! Iraq has soooo much to offer for tourists !!!
