Before He Cheats tells the story of a woman who took revenge on her unfaithful boyfriend.

The song was the best-selling national song of all time, with more than two million digital copies sold. Before He Cheats topped the charts of Billboard Country songs for five consecutive weeks, reaching eighth place on Billboard's hot 100th rankings for 64 straight weeks. It reached the top of Billboard's top 40 rankings and became a top 10 hit on the top 40 rankings and Billboard adults.

Before He Cheats was once the best-selling song of an American Idol contestant and was certified seven × platinum by RIAA, Underwood's best-selling single.

Before He Cheats has received several awards. At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, the song's writers won a Grammy for Best Country Song, and Underwood won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Before He Cheats was also named Single of the Year 2007 by the Country Music Association Awards and received a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year.
