Video Tutorial: how to knit mittens with an introductory lesson on knitting. Knitting mittens is a small enough project that could be done in a day or a few hours. I used Size 6 needles, 4 ply worsted yarn. MORE DETAILS BELOW.

Other Sizes, (Below information may need adjustments but will give you a pretty good estimate of where to begin how many stitches to start off with depending on the size you want to make.)

Infant 6 x 4 = 24 stitches, 1” cuff length, omit thumb, 3” from
beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total length when finished about 4”

Very young Toddler (10 mo. - 18 mo.) 6 x 2 + 8 x 2 = 28 stitches, Cuff length 1 1/2”, 10 stitches total around the thumb, 7 rows of thumb before rounding, 4” from beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total length when finished about 5”

Young Child 8 x 4 = 30 stitches, 2” cuff length, 8 rows from cuff to thumb, 12 stitches total around the thumb, 8 rows of thumb before rounding, 5” from beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total length when finished about 6”

Middle School Child 8 x 4 = 32 stitches, 2” cuff length, 6 rows from cuff to thumb, 12 stitches total around the thumb, 9 rows of thumb before rounding, 6” from beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total length when finished about 7”

Older Child 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 36 stitches, 2 1/2” cuff length, 8 rows from cuff to thumb, 14 stitches total around the thumb, 11 rows of thumb before rounding, 7” from beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total length when finished about 8”

Teen or Woman size 10 x 4 = 40 stitches, 13 rounds or approximately 2 1/2” cuff length, 10 rows from cuff to thumb, 16 stitches total around thumb, 16 rows of thumb length before rounding, 8” from beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total length when finished about 9”

Adult Man 12 x 4 = 48 stitches, 3” cuff length, 12 rows from cuff to thumb, 18 stitches total around thumb, 18 rows of thumb length before rounding, 9” from beginning to where to start rounding fingertips. Total finished length about 10”

BONUS NOTE: To avoid having a gap where thumb joins do not skip any rows when stitching the hand part. If needed do an extra slip stitch to fill in any gap if needed.
