Today I'm sharing how to make a DIY farmhouse sign frame so you can make your own farmhouse
sign like this.
This frame is super simple and really cheap.
You'll need 1-2 furring strips that measure about 1 inch by 2 inch by 8 feet long.
Then you'll need some plywood.
I like to use 1 inch thick to 3 quarters inch thick plywood for my signs so it's easier
to nail the frame into the plywood.
First measure and cut your wood to size.
This exact sign was made with a piece of leftover plywood so it had really weird measurements
of about 15 and 3 quarters inch by 24 and 3 fourths inch.
So I measured and cut my furring strips into 2 pieces that were 24 and 3 fourths inches
long and 2 pieces that were 15 and 3 quarters inch plus double the exact width of the furring
strips.
You want to add double the exact width of the furring strips to make those side pieces
span the side of the plywood but also cover the ends of the furring strips on the top
and bottom of the sign.
If you don't want to do any math, you can find out this measurement by putting a piece
of furring strip on the top and bottom of the sign and then use a measuring tape to
measure what it needs to be.
After your wood is cut, grab a piece of 220 grit sandpaper or your power sander with 220
grit sandpaper on it and sand the edges so they are smooth without the split ends that
can give you a splinter.
Then wipe the dust off and paint and stain them as you like.
I painted the plywood with 2 coats of binch lac based primer to prevent any discoloration
issues.
Once the primer was dry, I painted one coat of chalk paint onto the plywood.
I personally really like chalk paint for signs because I like the matte finish and it's easier
to paint words onto.
But that is for another video.
For the frame, I used a homemade water based stain made from brown latex paint and water
so I didn't have to worry about the fumes or a long dry time that regular wood stain
has.
Once everything was dry, I nailed it all together.
So first, I lined the frame up where it needed to go.
Then I started with the top or the bottom of the sign and nailed the furring strips
into the plywood.
Make sure you nail straight in so the nail doesn't go out the front or the back of the
plywood.
Trust me, I've done that way more than I'd like to admit.
Then I worked on nailing the opposite side on and then I nailed on the other two sides.
That's it!
You're ready to paint your saying on now.
