RAMESSEUM - FACTS ABOUT TEMPLE OF RAMSES II. Ancient Egypt documentary
Join me to see and learn more about the Ramesseum - a symbol of Western Thebes. Built in the 13th century BCE by Ramesses the Great, though in ruins today, this ancient Egyptian mortuary temple still captivates with its romantic charm and mesmerizes with its megalithic hypostyle hall. In its heyday it housed the largest ancient quarried and moved statue in the world. This giant monolith was about 20 meters high and weighed more than 1000 tons! The temple also featured two smaller, but equally excellent granite sculptures. One of them is known today as “The Younger Memnon”.
Like Ramesses II’s other temples, the walls of Ramesseum are covered with military scenes, mainly with the battle of Kadesh, which ended in the first peace treaty in history. Written in Akkadian millenia ago it still has a great meaning for contemporaries - its copy is on display in the United Nations headquarters in New York.
