Pocket Joinery Vs. Brushless Vs. Cordless This Actually The Right Way To HOLD A DRILL?! (UPSIDE DOWN Drilling/Driving--Better Tool Methods)

It seems obvious how you're supposed to hold a drill--by the engineered handle. But many DIYers don't realize that there are numerous OTHER ways to hold a drill as well! This short video from The Honest Carpenter will demonstrate a different philosophy for tool handling--one employed by many professional tradespeople.

Drills and drivers are designed to be handled with comfort and minimal fatigue. But some body positions make it difficult to hold a drill in the usual way--such as reaching down low, or reaching up high.

In many of these instances, using the drill in an unorthodox grip position is preferable!

The most useful secondary method is TURNING THE DRILL UPSIDE DOWN.

When reaching low, or avoiding obstacles that might be in the way, you can turn a drill or impact driver upside down and still use it effectively.

Your fingers can cradle the body of the drill or driver, with the bell at the back resting on your palm. Then, you can depress the trigger with your index finger or middle finger.

This keeps STRAIGHT-LINE PRESSURE on the drill bit, which is the most important thing for drilling and driving effectively.

Also, switching to a two-handed grip will let you drill or drive fasteners from a variety of positions. Really, I think employing a two-handed grip is optimal in most every circumstance.
