Good morning and welcome back to Oaxaca which for those of you who didn't know
is actually the food capital of Mexico and one of the most exciting things why I wanted to come here
obviously being the food capital and the city looked really pretty on pictures and also
they have market here that's called 20th of November market. I was born on 20th of November
I thought it was so cool and so weird and the market looks epic as well it's like a proper
food market so we're heading there now to have some delicious food. I don't know why I'm getting
so excited but I guess it's like for some people you know that love Harry Potter so much is when
they go around and see like the Hogwarts and all that that's exactly how I feel and because I've
seen this market on TV and there is a lady that works there I'm really hoping that we're gonna
meet her as well that would be epic. This is it. Vamos, vamos. Gracias. It probably smells like a barbecue inside a warehouse.
We are actually gonna start with the meat we're gonna go all in carne asada there's a whole street
just by the entrance of this market well inside the market full of this carne asada and I think
you go to the certain stalls pick your meat sit down with it and then people come over and give you
salad and veg and stuff yeah let's go yeah yeah gracias cheers thank you
right so the meats come basically you get given a little bowl they cook your meat up and then
they bring it over in the bowl in the meantime you get a load of people coming and hounding you
it was a little bit overwhelming with our limited Spanish but basically they give you
tortillas and then you can order your salad as well and that comes from a different stand
and you pay separately for everything so we paid like 40 pesos for this 15 for the
tortillas and then 100 for the meat it all looks amazing so yeah we're gonna dig in
all right let's go in with the old guacamole
I definitely wrapped this up totally wrong it's all the same when it's in your mouth
actually the meat's really lightly spiced that's really nice I was expecting it to be a bit hotter
that's really good really nice really tender
the meat is so thin as well it takes like minutes to cook everything yeah yeah exactly yeah it's
really really really good so yeah really tender falls apart um yeah maybe we should have got
more condiments to go with it I don't know but we're a bit overwhelmed with the process
but the meat itself is lovely I'm not conscious because I'm expecting
to eat a lot of food after this as well let's try chorizo I like that it's really um crispy
on the outside already it's really lovely and smoky on the outside slightly crispy
yeah I love how smoky it is slightly spicy full of um paprika
it's very fragrant as well oh that is delicious actually
right round one over let's continue
you know what's really interesting about Mexico there are quite a few people that are shorter
than Matt and I and that's not very usual I feel like proper giant sometimes it is a weird
weird feeling
this is amazing I can't figure out what it is it is some sort of fruit
I'm very disappointed in myself when I can't figure out this
it tastes like um guava I thought she said guava did we ever try guava I don't think we
haven't tried guava in terms of the fruit no I think I've tried drinks with guava before
that's why I couldn't figure out what it is because I never tried guava apparently this
is guava and it is incredibly delicious it's like a really mild not over sweet like proper
natural juice it's very refreshing sweet slightly slightly sour oh that is so good
so this is Tayuda I hope we're pronouncing everything right
which is supposed to be like a Oaxacan pizza perfect semi-dry tortilla as the base then
on top we have instead of tomato sauce we have a refined beans sauce on top and I read that
sometimes they use lard as well to put on a tortilla and lots of different fillings on top
so here we have tomatoes some cheese salad leaves I see salad and we got ours with chicken
and here is tamale which I'm incredibly excited to try as well I have read a lot about them
so they're traditionally wrapped and cooked whether in a corn husk or banana leaf
I think this is a banana leaf so it's um inside there's a corn dough and again lots of different
fillings wow I've never seen anything like it it smells really good it smells like asetima
like a rose hip shreddy chicken chicken so we have corn dough chicken and you know what the
that's how it tastes like mole in um with chicken and um condom it's um slightly bitter
slightly sweet the condo is quite gentle in itself as well it has got like a hint of um
corn flavor everything is very gentle but at the same time it's quite rich
all together I think because of the sauce that's very incredibly interesting try it
there's nothing like I was expecting it to be wow me too like you say that corn dough is really
interesting but like definitely it's definitely mole like you say it's definitely that mole
but the corn dough because it soaks all the sauce in as well that's really really good
apparently you can get tamales with all kinds of different fillings yeah right
yeah it's really really good do you want to try this let's do it let's dig in
now don't break it completely if you do you do no this this is messy this is messy man who cares
that's really good what was that
so yeah it's really interesting I love the the difference in textures as we get
further into the middle that's a lot softer and then the outside the very edge of the tortilla
here is really crispy and yeah the overwhelming taste is probably the gravy or the sauce from
the refried beans but then that cheese just gives it the whole Oaxacan cheese just gives
it a little bit of a salty creamy taste it's really really nice the chicken itself as well
is really well cooked that's actually funny yeah different to how I was expecting it to be
but really really nice really saucy I was when you see it in the picture I was expecting it to be
quite a dry dish but it's actually not really really good so Matt said about Oaxacan cheese
and Oaxacan cheese apparently is really famous it is similar to mozzarella but a bit more salty
and it's incredibly stringy we've had quite a lot of Oaxacan cheese from Mexico in general but
love it I mean if you like cheese there is no chance you're not gonna like that one
yeah actually when we were in Tulum we met some guys that was living and working in Playa del
Carmen and they said they've been to Oaxaca recently when we said we were coming here
and they were like they were French right and they were like you have to try the cheese the
cheese is amazing in Oaxaca and we were like for a French person to say that with the amount of
cheese they've got yeah it must be good so and they weren't wrong it's really really good you
can see why they have it on everything cheers muchas gracias hasta luego
as soon as we put the camera down they started talking to us and the lady that owns the shop
what is it like the cafe stall yeah stall she said that she is she's worked there all her life
and her mom used to work there so she used to come over there when she was little learn everything
from her mom it's like a family business so she's been working there all her life
they're so so amazing and so friendly and so kind so lovely also not tooting her own horns here
which means I am we actually managed to have a conversation with her
in Spanish I think it's a lot easier to understand because there are a few words
that you understand and then like logically you put two and two together you're like okay
that makes sense there yeah when it comes to like voicing your own opinion
we're actually heading to the exit because because people were talking to us I felt really
guilty to leave any food and we were absolutely stuffed but we done our best to like finish
everything we can't eat anymore but there is one thing that I've been desperate to try for ages
and grasshoppers or crickets I think it's more crickets because we read the difference
and grasshoppers supposed to be bigger so let's head and try some crickets so crickets are actually
a typical snack here in this part of Mexico and I think I'm going to try them but they're
in soup and chili
Excuse me, what is that?
It's a drink made with cacao
This is with cacao?
With cacao
Mamey seed
Very interesting
Yes
Very interesting
Very tasty and very fresh
And it's nutritious
Thank you
Right so we didn't quite make it to the exit
We were literally right there
And we saw the woman making something called Tejate
Which is an indigenous drink
Made from what we gather
Corn
Cacao
Maize
And different seeds
And yeah it looks really interesting
I'm dying to try it
We've been dying to try it for a while
It's a cold drink
That is so interesting
I'm pretty sure she said
Muy dulce
I feel like it's really sweet
And it is really sweet
That's interestingly a lot sweeter than I thought it was going to be
And that's really smooth as well
It does smell like coffee
Yeah it does have a coffee taste to it
It's really earthy tasting if that makes sense
And chocolatey right
You know what it tastes like?
It tastes like Baileys mixed with water
Yes
That is so interesting
It's got such a nice smell to it as well
It's very very pleasant
It smells a little bit medicine-y
Do you think?
Give it a whiff
Now it smells like Baileys because I said it now in my head
Maybe when I say medicine-y
I'm thinking it smells a little bit alcoholic
Maybe yeah
That's delicious
It's just slightly chocolatey
Really earthy, really really nice
Shall we take it with us to wash the crickets down with?
Yeah in case we don't like them
Let's go
I'm not going to lie
The old Chapulines hunt is not going well so far
I swear that when we were walking here last time
There was bloody loads of them
It's not Chapulines season anymore
As soon as it hits the 8th of March
They stop
Just keep hoping
Just keep swimming
Buenas tardes
Chocolates?
Chapulines
Chapulines por favor
4 for 20
Ready?
I didn't expect to have such choice
She was like do you want small, medium, large ones?
I was like I don't know
Which ones are your favourite
She was like I prefer the big ones
Questions
Do I pick out one?
Do I pick out one or
No I think for now
Just try one
Rather than whacking a whole lot in your mouth
And then going ---- I don't like them
All this time
I was really looking forward to doing it
Now I really don't
You do it first
I'll do it
I remember years ago before we went to Thailand
I gave it the big one that I was going to eat
A scorpion and stuff
And then when we got there I was like
Do you know what I'm not hungry
Maybe tomorrow
I feel like now the pressure is on I really do have to try this
They don't look too bad
I'll just do it
Bloody spicy
Really?
Do you know what
They're not bad
They're actually ok
I can see why you get them as a snack
They're similar texture to crisps really
They're really crunchy
Spicy
Very spicy
Do you reckon there's a lot of protein in them or not
I mean I guess so
I guess they're probably quite lean as well
It's probably better than crisps
Shall we take that as a snack on the bus
Yeah
Not that nice then is it
Do you know what I actually like that
It's just getting over your head
Yes but that's the thing I really want to try it
But they just look ugly
Go for it come on
You know what I'm scared of
One thing that it's going to be squishy inside
It's actually not
I mean I guess it depends on what one you get
But I picked some big ones
Ok
I told my gran that I'm going to try this
So I can't not now
What is wrong with me
You can get
We've seen it all
You can tell I'm a bit nervous can you
We've seen like
Crickets on the menu
Everywhere as a garnish
In many places
That's actually nice isn't it
Texture is actually good
They're very
Very crunchy
Which I like
Very spicy very salty
Very earthy
Yeah
I've gone all sweaty
No it's actually I think
Because we're not used to
Eating something like that
It's just getting your head around it I think
But actually they're not bad at all
They're not that spicy for you either
It gives me like an absolute
Baby
They're actually way better spicy than I am
I know maybe it just depends on what you get
You know what my favourite part is
They're
They're claws
Little pincers
Well
Five stars for the chapelinas
You remember in the beginning of the video
We told you that
Hopefully we're going to meet this lady
That was on a Netflix series
We're a couple of numbnuts
This lady is not working at this particular market
She's working at a different market
So we're going to head out to that market
Tomorrow
Because she's working from 7 in the morning
Until 12 and it's way after 12
So we're going to see her tomorrow
Hopefully
Okay so on that note we're going to tuck into our crickets
And we'll leave you here for this video
Yeah thanks for watching
And see you in the next one
Gracias
