We are going morel picking today. It's about mid-May and the temperatures got up warm enough
in the evenings that the morels are starting to pop. We're going up to a burn up here.
Never been up here before but we found the burn. It's up just ahead of us there.
But take a look at this spot. My goodness. Morels. We're just getting into this burn.
Might need to get up a little higher. We're down on this creek bottom.
Here we go. It's our first morels.
Nice. You got one Scotty.
Good ones. All right. We got a few sitting right here. Look at this. Look at this. We're starting
to get into them. We've been hiking for quite a while. One there. Oh look at this big one.
Use your cutter son. We're getting into them. Oh babe. Come down here guys. Hold on. All over.
Stop. They're all over. They're on the other side of that too. Look at this monster morel.
Cut it son. Good job. Show it to me. Oh yeah. Yeah. Look at that.
Look at this guys. Maddy cut this one. So when we're up here picking these morels,
some stuff that we look for is you want to be on a good exposure here. They just found some over
there. You want to have good exposure but they also need some shade and some moisture. So like
you look at this spot here. Hold on Scotty. You look at this spot here. You got a good
surrounding of trees. There's a lot of exposure right here. But right here in this patch,
follow me. We got, look Scott. We got a morel there and then look at these.
Come on Scott. We need to get that one. She's going to break that big one off.
Hey everyone. I hope everything's going well for you and I just want to thank you for joining us
again. We're going to do another kill it and grill it except this time we killed something a
little less lively and maybe a little less entertaining and that was a morel mushroom.
That's one thing that we do every spring. We love the seasons up here. One thing we really love
about North Idaho is that we have all four seasons and in every season the land really
produces something different. God designed this area where we live to produce something amazing
in each season and it's not all about the animals that we hunt. We also pick a lot of
huckleberries and in this case specifically we're going to be looking at morel mushrooms.
Now you may have heard of these. They're an unbelievable mushroom that grows. They go for
30, 40, 50 dollars a pound sometimes and we're fortunate and blessed enough to live in a place
that we can find them. What we want to show you today is if you get your hands on some morel
mushrooms we want to show you how to prepare them, how we prepare them as an appetizer to our
meal. So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to move the mushrooms from the bag
that we picked them in over into a bowl and we need to rinse these. They're really dirty. Some
of them get spray on them from the fire retardant that they put on there and so we're going to put
these in a salt water solution for a little bit before we cook them up. So we're going to put
them into a bowl. So we're going to put a little salt in. I just give it a maybe a couple tablespoons
of salt in there with a couple handfuls of mushrooms and then we're going to add water.
I like to rinse them just a little bit. So we get these in the water like this and I like to
just kind of run my fingers through it and you can see come in here on this water you can see
how dirty it is already. That's just from the burn where we were hunting for these mushrooms. So
we're going to let this brine in here for a little bit and soak and rinse and I'm just going to kind
of move these around and then in a couple of minutes I'm going to pour this out and do it
again. I do it twice and then I'm going to show you how to make the mix that we coat these in
before we fry them. All right so this is a very basic recipe. That's what we like about it. It's
simple. It's easy to get going. All you're going to need is some garlic salt and some all-purpose
flour. We use white flour. Some vegetable oil. You can use whatever substitute you want to for cooking
oil and what we do as just a basic measurement we do a cup of flour and a tablespoon of garlic
salt and we're going to whisk that. I'm going to show you right now. Not real precise. That's all I
got and we just whisk it just real quick. Doesn't take a whole lot here. I just want to make sure
it's kind of evenly distributed throughout there. It's not rocket science and then we're going to
fill the bottom of this pan with about a quarter inch of oil like that and then we're going to get
this oil warm and I'm going to show you how we roll them and cook them and then we're going to try
them out. All right so our water is hot so what we're going to do now make sure our heat stays
about right. We're going to roll these. Now if we hadn't rinsed these off in water what happens is
you get a lot of grit in there and you're just like chewing on sand and dirt and stuff so it's
important to rinse them off but now these have been in the water so now I'm just going to take
them. I'm going to roll it in the stuff like this and then we're going to drop it right in
and it's cooking away. So we're going to do that for a few of these and I like to let them cook
for about a minute or two a side. You'll see when they're kind of getting golden brown and then
we'll run through them. We'll flip them over. Get a nice golden brown to them. I'm going to cook this long enough
they're nice and tender. Pretty cool that God made all this stuff for our enjoyment and Genesis
tells us that he made every herb of the field, everything that creeps on the ground, all the
cattle, all the deer, everything that we get to enjoy God has made and I always see that as a reflection
of just God's goodness. Some people don't think God is good but they enjoy so many things in life
and when you and when you realize that God is the creator, the designer, the provider of all
those good things that you like you start to understand a little bit of God's goodness and
his grace and his mercy that he shows towards us and we're just beginning to understand that you
know when we when we end up going to glory you know as believers this is this is as far from
heaven as we're ever going to get and when we go to glory we're going to be enjoying and getting
to know the goodness and the faithfulness of God for eternity. So that's pretty cool. This is just
the first fruit of it. This is just a taste, a whiff of God's goodness. Maybe you don't think
God's good but I would ask you just to think through is there anything good in your life
because the word of God, the Bible, God's word tells us that he made all things and every there's
nothing that exists that wasn't created through him for him and by him. So if there's something
good in your life you have God to thank for that. Here's our finished product. This is just an
absolute gourmet appetizer. It's a simple simple recipe but unbelievably tasty, juicy, I mean
and unbelievable. I just want to take a second and thank you all for watching. If you haven't done it
