On this episode of Let’s Teach, we’ll find out just why it took so long and what was involved in the process of Martin Luther King Jr. Day becoming a federal holiday.

The name Martin Luther King Jr. is synonymous with words like hero, freedom, leader, and dignity. King is arguably the nation’s most important figure of the Civil Rights Movement, and he is among the most important historical leaders in the world. It’s no wonder, then, why we honor King’s legacy by observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday.

While it’s a well-known and widely celebrated holiday, the vast majority of Americans simply know it as another day they don’t have to attend work or school- you know, in honor of King. What most Americans don’t know, however, is that it took nearly twenty years for the federal government to accept and sign into law the day that commemorates the life, legacy, and tragic death of the man largely responsible for the advances in racial equality seen over the last 60 years.
