On December 22, the Department of Education's Office of the General Counsel sent a letter to the President of the University of Alabama, requesting that the University provide records of all contracts with more than 20 Chinese Communist government-funded universities and businesses, this was to include any gifts or donations received as well.
On Oct. 20, US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos , along with officials from the Department of Justice and the State Department, released the investigation results showing that U.S. universities were not able to report $6.5 billion in foreign gifts and contracts. According to data from the U.S. Department of Education, from 2014 to 2020, U.S. universities had received a total of more than $19.6 billion in foreign gifts and contracts, including nearly $1.5 billion from China, $3.1 billion from Qatar and $1.1 billion from Saudi Arabia.
The report notes that the vast majority of foreign funding goes to the largest and most prestigious U.S. universities that receive billions of dollars through a range of intermediaries. The report also noted that these universities are dependent on tens of billions of dollars of U.S. taxpayer money for subsidies, but at the same time are largely diverted from a sense of taxpayer obligation or concern for U.S. national interests, security or values.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo addressed the threat of the CCP in his speech at the Georgia Institute of Technology on Dec. 9. He emphasized that the CCP poses a danger to security and free speech on U.S. college campuses. The Secretary of State warns that many U.S. universities are being "bought" by Beijing and are censoring themselves to avoid offending the communist regime. Pompeo warned that the Communist regime is "poisoning the well of our higher education institutions for its own ends" and "degrade our freedoms and American national security”
The CCP has infiltrated all areas of American society, and has been particularly vigorous in its infiltration of prestigious universities. Gaining the support of prestigious American universities facilitated the promotion of communist ideology among college students while stealing advanced science and technology. Many of the students from prestigious universities will grow up to become elites in American politics and business, and will become the core force that will dominate the course and direction of American society in the future. If they accept communism to a certain extent in their minds, how can the American beacon of freedom and democracy still shine in the world?
