Josef J. Pihert
(Domoušice, 27 August 1845 - Praha, 21 October 1911)

Czech composer and pedagogue. As a child, he sang in the boys' church choir in the Týn Church under the direction of Albín Mašek. He received his musical education at the Jan Pavlis Military Music School. In the years 1870-1872 he attended the Organ School in Prague. He became the director of the choir and the city bandleader in Hustopeče in Moravia, and from 1875 he was the director of the choir in Nymburk. He contributed articles to Czech newspapers and magazines. In 1877 he settled in Croatia and worked as an episcopal bandleader in Senj. He was the choirmaster of the Nehaj choir and greatly contributed to the promotion of Czech music. He returned to Prague in 1883 and ran a music school until his death. He was an extraordinarily prolific composer. He composed 287 original compositions and performed another 150 adaptations of national songs and works by other composers. He focused more on lighter genres, such as operettas, singing farces and salon music. However, he also composed sacred music in classical style. He died in a poorhouse in Prague on October 21, 1911. #ClassicalMusic
