We're out about 4 hours south of Lima to do some filming about the Ica stones and visit the Huacachina Oasis. Meanwhile, we caught some sand waves and did some surfing ;)
We're in Peru at one of the, at the biggest food festival in South America.
Fresh pork right from the oven.
Oh, you heard that right?
Look at, look at all that smoke and steam coming out of the inner layer of this blanket.
And it's a pretty thick blanket.
I keep calling it a thick blanket because that, that's basically what this is.
And it looks like they made it wet so it doesn't burn off.
That's all banana leaves.
Look at that.
Sweet potatoes and yuca.
This is just a teaser, my friends.
I think that's a rack of lamb.
And then you see there's more stones here.
This is a big pit of meat and potatoes.
I'm gonna call this the pit of happiness.
Look, that's a full rack of ribs right there.
Some fat over there.
These guys are troopers.
All they have on are really thin rubber gloves.
I'm sure that's hot.
Some samples.
Oh, gracias, senor.
Wow, it's piping hot.
Oh, it looks like chicken.
And the volcanic stones are just sitting directly on top of the meats.
Gracias, gracias.
I hear, I hear Jackie Chan.
My uncle.
Love fridge magnets.
I collect them everywhere I go.
This is my first time trying guinea pig koi.
What do you guys think?
Tastes like chewy chicken.
Yeah.
This is kind of disturbing.
I'm going to show you guys something kind of, kind of weird.
So maybe don't eat.
This is the head.
They gave me the head.
I don't know if I was expected to eat this.
But I really don't want to eat this head.
Because you can see the brains in here.
And the ears.
And there's whiskers still on this head.
I can't.
I can't even.
Does that bother you guys?
No.
It doesn't bother you?
Bothers you?
You care?
I care.
Why Chinese people eat monkey brains?
We don't eat monkey brains.
Who told you that?
Day three in Peru.
Today, this is nothing to do with food.
But really, really exciting what we're going to do today.
So I obviously have a channel called Beyond Science.
We talk about a lot of supernatural stuff.
Supernatural, mysterious, ancient history stuff.
And a place we talk about a lot is in Peru.
This museum, what's it called?
Cabrera Museum.
It has a lot of ancient artifacts in there that's really hard to explain.
Like for example, the Inca stones is there, right?
Supposedly, those stones are millions of years old with depictions of like people and dinosaurs.
Anyway, some people say it's fake.
Some people say, oh no, it was created by this guy.
But he only created some of it.
But the rest of it were actually discovered.
So we're going to go check this place out.
Another reason why we came to Peru.
We're going to go to where?
Ica.
So we're going to Ica four hours away.
It's like five in the morning right now.
Luckily, we have breakfast.
Yay.
This hotel is pretty cool.
We sit at the, what's it called?
Ruku?
Ruku Hotel right here.
It's pretty cool because they asked if we wanted a breakfast like this early
because their breakfast wasn't open yet.
And they packed this for us.
And look at this.
Like the most adorable little sandwich ever.
This is like half the size of a regular sandwich in the US, I think.
And they gave us a juice box.
I haven't had like a juice box in 30 years.
These buses look insane.
Look at this.
It's like a business class seat on an aircraft.
So as soon as you get on this bus and you go upstairs,
I think the first class sort of seats are downstairs.
We're on the bus and it kind of looks like an economy class flight.
You got a little TV screen here.
And I don't know exactly what this thing is.
So you just like, huh, that's convenient.
Curtains.
I really wanted to try out a first class or business class looking bus fare.
None was available.
Maybe on the way back.
That was really strange.
The driver came through and videotaped all of us.
I guess in case we go missing.
Okay, we're in ICA and the museum doesn't allow any filming.
So we're going to try.
I don't know how it's going to work.
Wow.
That sounds like a really distressed cat.
Also, there's a huge temperature difference between here and Lima.
Things like, it's like at least 80 degrees right now.
This jacket is not helping.
I'm starving too.
We're here.
It's a lot smaller than I imagined.
So now we're going to see if they're going to allow us to film in there.
This is Huacachina and we're going on a sand...
One oasis in South America.
Huh?
One oasis.
The only oasis in South America.
Okay, we're going to an oasis.
That sounds pretty exciting.
You guys see that mountain?
That's a sand dune.
This is the sand buggy that we're going to take to the dune.
So we're going to go sand dune tour and sand sliding, sand surfing.
But now I gotta get some food.
So I should update you guys on what happened at the museum.
So the museum tour was more like a lecture about all the stones, about how the stones were found.
Super interesting stuff.
The museum owner, a really nice guy, he didn't want any filming in there.
We were able to take some photos.
If you guys don't know, the Inca stones depict a lot of interesting things like dinosaurs with humans.
And if you guys don't know about the Inca stones, I'll link a video for you in my description box.
It's basically stones that were found, I think close to 100 years ago.
That were said to be millions of years old.
Tens of millions of years old.
But that experience was really interesting.
And now I'm at this hotel in the middle of a desert.
And we're about to eat some food and then go on a sand dune tour.
Starving.
Checking out ancient rocks really just works up my appetite.
It does.
This is soup with seafood.
It's a fish soup.
I think that's about it.
It's all fish.
Some shrimp and some squid.
This is some kind of meat with mushroom sauce on top.
Looks like some beef.
Oh this looks good.
Big chunks of fish.
Tomato based soup.
Oh that's delicious.
There's some octopus and scallops in there.
It's got a nice smoky flavor.
I thought it'd be more acidic because of tomatoes.
Not at all.
Just really balanced soup.
Wow.
That's tender fish.
I was craving some seafood because I've been eating like
pork and lamb non-stop.
But it hits the spot really well.
This is the beef.
Looks like it has a kind of gravy inside.
They definitely know how to cook meat in this country.
I mean the steak I thought was gonna be a little tough.
It's tender.
That flavor is magnificent.
They grilled it right before they put on the sauce.
Just a superb char broil taste.
And had to get some fried rice.
I don't know what's calling to me.
Seafood fried rice.
Looks really good.
Chunks of shrimp, calamari, octopus.
It's really pretty too.
This is good as well.
Not as flavorful as the two other dishes.
I feel like most dishes in Peru are over seasoned.
And I'm not complaining.
I love it that way.
But I think a lot of people would say it's a bit salty.
But the rice dish, I feel like that's kind of perfect.
Not too salty.
A lot of flavor.
Good seafood.
Rice is cooked well.
This is a fantastic place.
I mean it's a hotel restaurant.
So I didn't think too much of it.
Really good place.
After a meal, this chocolate is supposed to be really good.
It's fig chocolate.
Oh it's really good.
There's a whole fig inside.
Like a chocolate fig stuffed with caramel.
Also I got this.
I don't know what this is.
Oh it's lukma flavor ice cream.
Lukma is what I tried for the first time yesterday at the festival.
How's your lukma stuff?
I love it when my ice cream comes with this little wooden spoon.
Because when I was a kid, all the ice cream I had in China came with a little wooden spoon.
Lukma is awesome.
Some vanilla ice cream.
Some lukma.
This thing is spicy.
Why is it spicy?
A little good though.
I think the spice might just be from the cinnamon.
Where's my tongue?
Just a little bit.
There it is.
Big sand dune.
There we go.
I had to get rid of my gimbal.
So it might be a little shaky, the footage.
Um, didn't want to get sand in it.
So excited.
I don't know why, but it's on my bucket list to roll down a sand dune.
I don't know if that's normal or not, but it's something I want to do.
Inside a buggy.
Do I have to put on a seatbelt?
It's like a roller coaster.
What if my thing is...
What if I'm too fat and I can't reach?
Because...
How are you able to feature so long?
I'm gonna die.
I switched with Jasmina.
So now my seatbelt connects.
It's good.
Because I didn't want to die here.
There we go.
I'm ready.
This is like a roller coaster ride.
Oh my god.
Oh, if I didn't have this, I would have died.
100% would have died.
One thing I gotta say, you gotta do this if you come here.
Gotta do it.
That was like a real life roller coaster ride.
Except, I mean, you could fall out.
You could.
Let me show you guys around.
There's some sand there.
And then there's some sand over there.
More sand over there.
And yeah, you get the picture.
All sand everywhere.
All right, now I think we're going to location number two.
We're gonna slide down a sand dune at some point.
I don't know when that is.
I've been eating sand non-stop.
And I have sand in my mouth.
Let me show you guys.
It doesn't look that steep on the screen probably.
There it is.
This is steep.
This is really steep.
First time at a sand dune.
I'm gonna go sandboarding now.
He said to take off shoes.
You do not want sand in your socks.
I think I'm gonna keep my jacket on because this jacket is a little slippery on the outside.
So I'm thinking that's gonna help.
I have no idea.
I have no sandboarding experience.
He's about to go sandboard right now.
Yeah, count me really excited.
You excited, Ben?
Yeah.
Scared?
Yeah.
It's okay.
It's just sand.
Worst thing that's gonna happen, I'm gonna eat some of it.
It's gonna be a sandwich.
I just found this.
That didn't go as well as I planned.
Now there's sand in my butt.
There we go.
Grab my board.
Let's see how they do it.
Oh, I thought we had to stand there.
No, you gotta lay down.
This is a lot safer.
Adios, auntie.
Yeah!
I'm gonna take some preventive measures.
Ready?
I'm gonna attempt to video myself going down.
So this may or may not work.
I might lose my camera.
It's worth it, right?
My strategy worked.
No sand got in here.
That was pretty fun.
Jasmina's coming down now.
It's okay.
I got you.
How was it?
There's Ben.
Oh, Ben's attempting to go down with a camera.
Like an actual camera.
Showing excitement.
Very contained.
Like he always is.
There he goes.
Is that fun, buddy?
This is dune number two.
It's a lot less steep than the other one.
That's where we came down from.
This one, yeah.
Half the excitement, I think.
You know, I'm feeling a little philosophical.
And in case I die in the boogie,
I just wanna,
I wanna leave my footprint on earth before I go.
Mission accomplished.
Sand dune number three.
And this is supposed to be the steepest one.
Let's check it out.
I can't even see from right here whether it's steep or not.
Let's see.
Whoa.
This would be like a double diamond in terms of ski slopes.
That's pretty steep.
Really pretty though.
We're climbing even higher.
Going up.
Let's go up too.
You might be wondering why I was wearing a jacket.
And I still should be wearing a jacket.
It's cold.
I mean, it's not cold, but it's not warm either.
And the sand is cold because it's in the shade.
Did you give up?
I can't.
See, you're sinking in as soon as you're stepping into the sand.
It ain't easy.
There she goes.
Yeah.
All right, I think I need both hands for this one.
All right, we're done sand surfing.
We're gonna be here in this spot until the sun sets.
Here's what it looks like.
I'm gonna attempt to time lapse it.
Imagine you're lost in the desert.
You're hot.
You're thirsty.
And then you see this.
Oasis.
I don't know if I drink that water though.
It looks kind of green.
That was pretty amazing.
I would recommend anybody that's around here to try this out.
Only thing that surprised me, like we were the only Asians here.
I don't think Asians found this place yet.
Here's the Oasis up close.
I have sand everywhere.
Well, that was a pretty fun day.
Back to the hotel for a much-needed shower.
There's some guys skiing down the sand dune.
I mean, he's not moving much though.
This is really interesting.
Arcade and like semi-amusement park slash restaurant.
Norkies.
Chicken.
Chicken?
Oh, let's get some Caribbean chicken.
This is really cool little complex.
Look at the ice cream cone.
Let's go like Peru's Panda Express.
Whoa, that's like a Walmart.
Yay, let's go to Norkies.
This is off the hook.
It's Friday night.
It's busy here.
I think we're gonna go for like a whole chicken.
Like a meal.
Wait, what is it?
It's a combination.
This?
So chicken and fried rice?
One chicken, french fries, salad.
Everybody is looking at me at this restaurant.
It's not what you think.
No one knows I do YouTube videos here.
They all think I'm Jackie Chan.
I'm looking, they're smiling at me.
I know they think I'm Jackie Chan or his son or something.
Just here for some chicken.
Inca Cola, the national soft drink of Peru.
Ah, syrupy.
Oh, I think I need this after days of just gorging on meat.
Whole chicken, Caribbean chicken.
That looks delicious.
Because it's actually fresh out of the oven.
Just a massive plate of french fries.
It's kind of soggy though.
Chicken looks good.
Some of that skin.
Ah, it's tender.
That chicken is delicious.
Especially when you dip it in this spicy yellow sauce.
I'm not really sure what's in here.
Great.
I don't think it needs the sauce even.
They put cumin on the skin.
Anytime you have cumin on roasted meats, always gonna make it better.
This is the non-spicy version.
Like partially, I think it's garlic.
Oh, fresh garlic.
Can't go wrong with parsley and fresh garlic.
Even that fried rice is good.
Fries are made from golden potatoes.
They're just like, there's so much tastier than regular potato stones.
There's so much mushier and creamier.
This place is literally a Walmart.
San Luis.
This is the better water.
So sin gas is no gas.
I want gas.
So, uh, sin gas.
I'm looking for con gas.
There we go.
Whoa, marinated chicken.
Well, it looks like chocolate milk in a bag.
It's actually really just a good buy for one night.
Look at this.
Seriously.
So there's that Walmart place.
There's Norky's.
There's like electronic stores.
There's ice cream shops.
And then there's a stall that's selling mattress.
Name one place that don't really fit.
This is Home Depot.
Orange like Home Depot.
These are the little cabs we're taking.
Four of us in that cab with the driver.
It's like a little, little toy car.
