For centuries, Europe was embroiled in near-constant conflict. The continent was shaken by violent power struggles between nations and rulers. It wasn't until the Enlightenment and the French Revolution in 1789 that a new concept of Europe emerged, based on shared values such as liberty, equality, and fraternalism.
