MOBILE LINKS: More OTGW Vids! tongue twister challenge
Hey guys, welcome to Off the Great Wall. I'm Mia. And it's Felicia. And today we have our friend Ben
from Learn Chinese Now. Hey guys, how you doing? So today we've come up with a tongue twister
challenge. Yes. And we all kind of specialize in our own languages, right? So Ben is the master
of Mandarin Chinese. And English. If you haven't noticed already. Are you? Just kidding. I'm the
So, Ben, for you. Oh, and I'm the half sensei of Cantonese. Sensei is not even Chinese. I know.
I'm just an eclectic mixture of everything. All right. Well, let's get started. So we've each
prepared some tongue twisters from our chosen language. So I prepared these Mandarin Chinese
ones for you guys. And we'll check them out. We'll start with a really classic one. Yeah. Okay. And
I'll demonstrate it for you first. And then you guys have got 15 seconds to say it. 15? Yeah,
that's... I'm going to say it in 10 seconds or less. Okay. So like 15 seconds is giving you
some time. Well, it depends. It's relative, but go on. All right. So we'll start with this really
classic one. So I'm going to set a timer. Ready? Go. Okay. Oh, that was four seconds. Oh,
how symbolic because it says four is four. Yeah, you said it. Nine seconds. Nine seconds
that you pronounced your last character wrong. All right. You want to try it, Felicia? Oh my
God. I think I'm more competitive than actually getting it right. I care about winning. The
Wow. 6.6 seconds. That was cool. That was pretty cool. So obviously my Mandarin skills
are the worst. All right. So shall we do the next one? Yeah. But like,
how can you be so good at Mandarin? Oh, well, I learned my Mandarin in university. So I studied
four years and I did one year in Taiwan. Me too. Oh, without the Taiwan. Me too. Did you? Yeah.
Oh, really? Cool. I have a Chinese major. You have a Chinese major? What? Hey,
you should, this should be easy for you then. No, but the thing is, if you don't use it,
you lose it. So let's get to this next one. This is also a classic one that plays on the
different tones of the same character. This one is really long. And the pinyin just looks exactly
the same. It's like S-I or S-H-I. Yeah. That's the only two. Oh, and Z-H-I. Z-H-I. Okay. Let's
see how you do it. 15 seconds. Okay. Eight seconds. Pretty good. Okay. One, two, three,
go. Stop, stop, stop, stop. All right. Next one. No, no, Mia has to go for it first. Do you
want to try it? Yeah. Okay. 15 seconds. Okay. Ready, set, go.
Oh, yes. 11.1 seconds. Because half of that is just 66. Hey, don't steal my
glory. All right, go ahead. I'm going to beat your record. Oh, yeah? Okay. All right. Who's
going first? Mia. All right, I'm going to time you. Ready, set, go.
Wow. 13 seconds. 13.9 seconds. Let's just say 14, almost 14. No way, 13.9. You're 0.1
off 14 seconds. Whatever. Okay. Three, two, one, go.
Your turn. Okay. Step into my office. So where does your canto come from, Felicia?
My canto? Well, my dad and my mom both speak Cantonese to me growing up, but you grow up and
you lose it because you start speaking English. So yes. Do you still speak this at home? No,
I speak it to my grandma in very fragmented Cantonese sentences that's mixed with English.
Okay. All right. Let's just get into it. All right. Let's go. I don't think you know that much.
Okay. You'll have your time to shine, Ben. All right. Let's start off with this one. It's the
easiest and the shortest. So it means that brother is taller than the other brother.
You added a go in there. You just tried to remember what I said, didn't you?
Because actually all it says on the sheet is go, go, go, go, go.
Can you say it again? Huh? Can you say it again?
All right. Let me try.
But what's the point of that? I don't know. Just the way that you say it's like-
Because I'm like really trying here, you know?
That was pretty good though. That was pretty good.
Okay. We'll go with the next one. Yeah. Let's go with the second one.
That was short. So the next one, let's time it. How long?
You mean this longer one? Yeah. Maybe 20 seconds to say this.
Do you think 20 seconds is enough? I don't even know how long I'll take.
Two minutes.
See, even you didn't get it right. Do I get a warmup?
No. All right. All right.
No, sorry. I have to start again. Why you can't do that?
I get one. Keep going. I get one.
Lifeline. Okay.
Tongue twisting part of this is because turtle and chicken and expensive all sound the same.
So turtle is guai. Chicken is gai. Expensive is guai.
All right. I'll time you. Ready, set, go.
Actually your tones here and there are actually pretty spot on.
Pretty on point, right? Randomly.
Well, okay. Last one. I think this one will be fun. Short and sweet.
This is a breeze compared to the second one.
Yeah. So it's called, I mean, so it means dig gold, dig orange, dig chicken bones.
But the whole part of the tongue twister is you have to say it quickly.
Okay. Now we've got Indonesian.
This just looks like a type.
I think like out of the three, this is the easiest one because you can just
read it off. Like I don't even need to write down.
Yeah. It's like English.
So how did you learn your Indonesian, Mia?
I was born and raised in Indonesia. So this is actually my mother tongue.
So you should be pretty good, right?
I'm pretty good.
Go.
Whoa. That was like three seconds.
That's like you're talking to a baby. Like a baby's like...
It's like baby language.
All right. So shall I try this then?
Yeah.
We'll time it.
Oh, 7.2 seconds.
Are you criticizing your pronunciation?
That was like a nice pause in between.
He has this pattern of like going towards the front as it says it.
Did I do that?
That was pretty good.
Was I like that?
Yeah. No, it's pretty good actually, but there's no H sound.
And like you, you say kakek, kakekku.
It's actually kakek, kakekku.
Just like in general.
Oh, okay.
You say it.
Okay.
I'll time you. Ready?
Kaki pants.
I think she got it.
And you added a joke in there. That's like a bonus point.
I love kaki.
Wow. Even you messed it up.
How come you like, is there a way to sound more Indonesian?
Like is, do you say like buh, like is it buh or buh?
What?
Like, because otherwise it'd just be like reading English.
Like what makes it sound from English?
Yeah, I could read it like this.
Yeah.
Yeah. Like what makes it sound like Indonesian?
You sound like a typical, like white man speaking Indonesian.
Kutuku bata tubuhku, tapi tubuhku tak bata kutuku.
Bata, you're just inserting English words that sound similar.
Again, she got it right.
She got it right.
Just because she's with you on the show, I'm like the outsider in here getting bullied.
This one is so easy, even though it's so long.
I'm going to say it.
Wait, let me time you. There we go.
What does that even mean?
Wow, that took you eight seconds.
Yeah, what does it mean?
It means I hate you because you're like,
kind of flirting with my husband so that my husband likes to just like-
You know why this rolls off the tongue?
Breaking into smile and laughter by himself?
For you, because you must say this a lot.
What? The tongue?
You must say this a lot.
No, that's why it rolls off the tongue.
Yeah, yeah. This is actually pretty-
She's admitting to the fact that she says this a lot.
Actually, I remember hearing this when I was younger.
So yes, I might have said it a lot in the past.
Warm memories.
All right, let me try, let me try, let me try.
Okay.
You sound like a Buddha.
Hey, don't interrupt.
Okay.
Is that cool or what?
Like chanting.
Yeah, it's like chanting a religious-
Go, go.
Saya sebal sama situ sebab situ suka senyum-senyum sama suami
sehingga suami saya suka senyum-senyum sendiri saya.
She said senyum-senyum.
Actually, it should be senyum-senyum.
Oh, okay.
Senyum-senyum.
It means to smile.
So that's it.
I feel like it was an ordeal.
I feel like I'm in a war zone.
What do you think, guys?
