Britain in the Age of Arthur - A Military History
A generation before the sack of Rome in 476, Roman culture and civilization had dwindled to almost nothing in its British territories. What happened after the Romans left Britain?
King Arthur
King Arthur is a legendary mythology of Great Britain British king who is central to the medieval literary tradition known as the Matter of Britain.
Arthur appears in the earliest traditions as a leader of post-Roman Britons in battles against Saxon invaders of Britain in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. He is mentioned in two early medieval historical sources, the Annales Cambriae and the Historia Brittonum, but these are from 300 years after he is said to have lived, and most historians who study the period do not believe he is a historical figure. His name appears in early Welsh literary sources such as Y Gododdin. The character evolved through Welsh mythology, appearing as either a great warrior defending Britain from human and supernatural enemies, or as a magical folklore figure, sometimes associated with the Welsh otherworld Annwn.
What happened in Britain after the Romans?
After the Romans left Britain, there was a large spread of Angles, Saxons, and Franks with minor rulers, with the next major rulers thought to be Horsa and Hengist. There was also a Saxon king, the first of whom is now linked to all British royalty and known as Cerdic.
