Hi everyone, welcome back to a new video.
Now, today's video, I was planning on calling it, like, summer book haul, like, summery vibes.
I feel like my last video I filmed, The Sun Was Right, it felt really summery.
Today, I kid you not, it is so dark, raining, dreary, dull.
Like, it feels like it's December right now, like, I don't understand.
So, this is gonna be a cosy book haul instead of a summer book haul
because it doesn't feel summery at all.
Me to the sun.
You ruined it.
So, today, we have got a book haul of the books that I've accumulated in the past couple months.
I can't remember when I did my last book haul.
I feel like it was maybe February or March time, the last time I did one.
But I have stacked them into their piles.
We've got 20 books here and I've only bought four of them myself.
So, I'm just so grateful that a lot of these have been gifted to me
and a lot have been sent by publishers and stuff like that.
I'm just so incredibly grateful that I get to receive books in that way.
But I think what we're gonna do is go through the ones that I've bought first,
then we'll go through the ones that publishers have sent to me,
then we'll go through book box ones because there's only two of them,
and then last we'll end with the ones that have been gifted to me
because that is by far the biggest stack and there's a lot of really exciting books in there.
So, I'm gonna leave that to laugh to keep me waiting.
Okay, so I'm so excited to read all four of these that I bought.
Firstly, I bought Girl in the Walls by A.J.
I did hear how this was pronounced the other day.
Gnuse?
A.J. Gnuse, who is the author of Girl in the Walls.
Yes! Yes!
This is genuinely one of my favorite covers ever and I just love it.
And also I read about how this cover was set up.
It's actually like a paper set that they took a picture of.
It's just so gorgeous and we got the sprayed edges.
Oh my god, yes!
Yes, sis. Pop off. Go in.
You didn't have to snap so hard.
So I did partly buy this because of the, you know, design.
It's literally one of my favorite covers ever.
But this is a thriller about...
All I know about it is this young girl who I think like loses her parents.
She goes back to her old family home and lives in the walls.
Now, I don't know if she's like a ghost or if she's genuinely like a person like sliding through the walls.
There's now another family there and they think they can like see her.
I think the sons start to think they can see her and hear her.
And that's basically all I know about it.
But something about it just really intrigues me.
It generally is one of my favorite covers ever.
Like I just, I absolutely am obsessed with it.
Yeah, I think this is like a debut thriller author.
So I just really wanted to give it a go.
Give it a go, try the author out, see if it's my kind of vibe.
Because I love this cover.
Okay, then next I bought a book for an upcoming video that I'm doing.
And I bought Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.
What I know about this, also this cover I love, you can't really see.
Hopefully I'll be able to show you in the close-up.
Is this wallpaper, it's like reflective.
And when I look at it, I can just have a lot...
I'm a simple girl.
I can have a lot of fun just staring at this cover like this.
And there's a cat!
I miss my cat.
Well, guess what people? I get excited about small things.
There's this coffee house you can go to.
And you can like transport yourself through the coffee.
Like you can travel back in time.
But you have to return before the coffee gets cold.
Otherwise you won't be able to return.
That's all I kind of know.
I'm gonna be reading this really soon.
In fact, is this... this is gonna be the next book I read in real life.
You're gonna see it like another week.
But this is gonna be the next book I pick up.
So I'm really excited to get to this one.
And I've heard a lot of good things about this.
So I just thought it was like time I read it.
And then I popped back into Waterstones the other day.
Oh my god!
It was amazing to me.
I hadn't been back because I've been finishing off kind of some uni stuff.
And I wanted to go at a time that felt right.
So I went in and I bought a few books.
And I just like communed with the books.
It was amazing.
So I bought Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Booley.
This is by an indigenous author, I believe.
And it's about this girl who I think is half indigenous.
And she witnesses this murder.
And she becomes part of this covert FBI operation into drug-related deaths.
And I wasn't initially interested in this book.
Like, I heard a few people talk about it.
And I was like, okay, fine, fine.
You know.
And then I watched Mara from Books Like Woe.
I watched all of her videos.
I'm obsessed with her.
Mara, if you see this.
I watched her speak about it.
And I was just sold straight away.
Apparently, it's very hard-hitting.
It deals a lot with like drug issues within indigenous communities.
She just sold me on it.
And when I saw it, I was like, okay, I'm gonna get that.
I'm gonna get it.
Sometimes the books that I am not immediately interested in.
And then someone sells them to me.
And I'm like, okay.
They end up being my favorite books.
Sometimes the books I'm initially excited for, like, don't hit the spot.
But then the books that I kind of, at first, were a bit turned off towards.
And then I come around.
Sometimes they end up being the best ones.
And then I picked up Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.
This is the author of The Martian.
Which, I love that book.
I feel like I need to reread it.
I read it probably like seven, eight years ago last.
And I loved the film.
And so I knew I wanted to get this book when it came out.
All I know about this is that it's about an astronaut who I think is the last survivor of their mission.
It says,
As he's hurtling through space on his tiny ship.
It's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery and conquer an extinction.
Look, oh.
And we need to keep talking.
And conquer an extinction level threat to our species.
So yeah, I really loved The Martian.
I struggle sometimes with sci-fi because I'm a bit dumb.
Like, I'm not sciency in that way.
So sometimes sci-fi is a bit too highbrow.
But when I read The Martian, it was really funny and really engaging.
And kind of about this human.
Like, a human story in a sci-fi setting, which I really like.
So this is one of my most anticipated releases this year.
I know all of my family are going to read it.
Like, I FaceTimed them.
I was like, oh my god, I bought this.
And they were like, yeah, okay.
Thanks for getting that.
We will all read that.
And probably before I do.
Because I buy books and then read them two years later.
Quickly, let's go through the books that have been sent to me by publishers.
One of the ones I was most excited for is The Baby is Mine by Oyunkan Braithwaite.
I didn't realise how short this was going to be.
Like, I really...
It's literally just over 100 pages.
And the writing is massive.
This is the second book by the author of My Sister the Serial Killer.
Which was a short book in itself.
But this is just, like, incredibly short.
It's basically a novella.
This is about a guy who turns up, I think, to his uncle's house.
He finds his aunt there.
And a baby in a crib.
And another woman.
And they both claim to be the mother of this baby.
And the guy's like, I don't know what's going on here.
I don't think this is my business.
That's basically all I know about it.
I really enjoyed My Sister the Serial Killer when I read it last year.
It was such a solid thriller.
And this is going to be perfect for something like a readathon.
Because it will literally only take you maybe an hour to read.
Then Sandstone Press got in touch with me and asked if I wanted to receive two of their books.
I actually hadn't heard of these books.
But they both sounded super interesting.
So the first is The Disassembly of Doreen Duran by Ryan Collip.
And this book is basically about this woman who witnesses, like, some kind of horrific accident.
And this police officer wants to know what she saw.
And she's like, I ain't telling you.
I'm gonna run.
And this, like, police officer is chasing after her.
And it's, like, apparently just a really bizarre situation.
Very strange.
So I thought that sounded really interesting.
This comes out...
Oh, it'll be out by the time this video's up.
And then I also received Kings of a Dead World by Jamie Mollet.
This is about a futuristic society where Earth's resources are dwindling.
And so I think there's something called The Sleep which basically puts people into hibernation
in order to kind of control the resources of the world.
There's gonna be some kind of protest and dissatisfaction with what's going on.
And I don't know, it just sounds super interesting.
So thank you Sandstone Press for that.
And then HarperCollins sent me Fireborne, which is a really anticipated middle grade
coming out at the end of this year.
What I love about this is that it's, like, this magical kind of medieval vibe with clans.
I think the character in this is very, like, headstrong.
Like, a very, like...
I think the Orsha...
I can't speak.
Get that fire exit door.
I'm off.
I think I remember the author tweeting about how it's definitely inspired by Buffy.
Like, middle grade Buffy set in this kind of, like, medieval vibe, I believe.
I'm really excited to get to this.
And this comes out at the end of September.
So quite a way away.
I've got time to read it.
But yeah, this is...
If you're into middle grade, I think this is gonna be one of the biggest middle grades
in the second half of this year.
And then finally, I got sent Quarantine Comics by Rachel Smith.
This is basically a comic book kind of thing.
Oh, we've got some colour paint.
Oh my god, it's a cat!
What I know about this is that it's a memoir of life in lockdown.
So the author is speaking about kind of the weirdness and life in this quarantine
that we've all had to deal with.
I feel like I'm not ready to read, like, a pandemic novel.
Do you know what I mean?
Like, a real pandemic novel.
I'm not ready for that.
But I feel like in a comic book where I think the purpose of this is more that we're all
gonna relate to it and see ourselves in it, I'm ready for that.
So I'm gonna give this a try soon.
Hopefully.
Okay, and then quickly two books I've received from Fairyly in the last couple months.
The first, I won't go into much detail because I've already spoken about this,
but this is The Bright and the Pale by Jessica Rubinowski.
This is like a polar fantasy.
I've heard it's very much like The Fairy and the Nightingale.
That means I'm very much excited for it.
You can bet I'm gonna be reading this soon.
I've also heard really good things about people who have been reading it.
And yeah, inspired by Russian folklore, epic fantasy, we move.
And then I actually haven't shown this yet.
I couldn't resist opening it.
But I received The Prison Healer by Yanet Noni.
This is an enigma.
I really don't know what this is about.
I'm not gonna lie to you.
I fully do not know the plot of this.
The level of unprofessionalism, far too much.
Something about a queen being sentenced to trial and our protagonist is a healer working
in the prison.
Oh, The Prison Healer.
Yeah.
What?
In this case, I'm asking you guys, if you've read this, let me know what you thought of it.
If you think I'd like it.
I love the...
You've got straight edges, but on this side, it's like a key, which I think is gorgeous.
I'll just quickly show you, actually, the stuff that came in this Fairyloot box.
So we had these gorgeous bookends, which are probably, like, one of the favourite things
I've ever received in a Fairyloot box.
I think they're absolutely gorgeous.
When I go back home, I think I'll probably use these, like, on my fantasy shelf, perhaps.
Then we've got a tote bag.
This is inspired by the Blood and Ash series.
We have some Cherry Blossom soap, which smells so good.
A David Badd enamel pin.
We have some tarot cards and we have some foiled bookmarks as well, which I really love
the popular one.
I'm a big fan of the popular one, so I really love receiving this one.
So that's what came in the April Fairyloot.
And then let's finally get into the books that I've been gifted in the past couple months.
I'm really excited about some of these.
So firstly, a very kind subscriber.
So a long time ago, I had Horrid by Katrina Leno on my Amazon wishlist.
And I remember when I was clearing my Amazon wishlist out, I had seen it had been bought,
but I'd never received it.
And I tried contacting Amazon.
There was no way, because I hadn't purchased it myself, of them finding out what happened
to it or who had bought it.
So I tried asking on, like, Twitter and Instagram, like, if you bought this, please let me know,
because I don't know what's happening with it.
And then I checked my Goodreads messages one day, and I found the person that had tried
to send this to me, and they sent it to me properly this time.
And I got it, and I received it, and it didn't go missing this time.
So this is Horrid by Katrina Leno, which genuinely, like, one of my favourite covers of all time.
Try, like, honestly, look.
Look at her.
She is a moment.
Alexa, tell me I'm stunning.
Very stunning.
I think, like, our main character discovers this, like, young girl's room that has been
locked up for years and years, like, untouched.
And it's kind of a horror.
I don't want to know too much going into it, because I didn't know much going into Katrina
Leno's other book that I read, You Must Not Miss, and that was one of my favourite books
of last year.
So, like, I kind of want to leave it a bit unknown and, like, a bit mysterious.
It's a five-star prediction.
I recently did a five-star prediction video, and this was in there.
Like, without a doubt, this is going to be one of my favourite books.
Katrina Leno just does something to me that I don't fully understand, but, like, I vibe
with it.
She's really good at examining, like, anger and grief and sadness.
And so, I just feel like it's going to be five stars.
I'm so excited.
I'm so, so excited.
So, thank you so much to the subscriber that bought this for me.
Then we have some books that my family sent me for Easter a couple months back.
From my grandparents, I got three books.
Firstly, I got Sheets by Brenna Thumna.
I am so excited to read this.
I have wanted this graphic novel for ages.
Look at, like, how gorgeous the inside of this is.
Like, the colour scheme is absolutely gorgeous.
I feel like I don't have many graphic novels...
Graphic...
Did I say that right?
It's just...
Sometimes I'm filming and I don't know what I say, genuinely.
I don't feel like I have many graphic novels in my possession.
I think I only have this and Quarantine Comics right now.
I really love reading graphic novels.
So, I'm constantly on the lookout for ones that I enjoy.
I'm looking forward to one day when I can go to Gosch Comics again and pick up some graphic novels.
Because I really loved reading them last year and I haven't really read any this year.
What I know about this is that it's about a young girl who I believe has to run her family's laundromat.
I think she's only 13 and the kind of responsibility has been left to her.
And she meets Wendell, who's a ghost.
And it's about their relationship together.
I just think it's so gorgeous.
I've heard that it's kind of, like, sad.
But, like, that kind of, like, melancholy feeling.
And I really like reading books like that.
So, I'm so excited to get into this again.
I'm so excited when I can start, like, participating in readathons and maybe hosting my own...
I don't know why I'm saying it like that.
I haven't got any concrete plans.
Like, I haven't got anything to tease you with.
But I did tell a bit of a lie there.
Oh my god, I'm so excited to read this.
This is gonna be, hopefully, one I read soon.
I sit about every ******* book and then I don't read it for years and years.
I'm a clown.
Then they sent me...
Okay, so...
People won't get this, but...
No!
They sent me The Bungalow Mystery, which is the third in the Nancy Drew mystery story.
So, I loved playing Nancy Drew when I was a kid.
I used to play with my granddad a lot.
I loved, like, the Nancy Drew games that you could get on your computer.
And so, a couple years ago, I started on Scribd reading the original mysteries on the audiobooks.
And the audiobooks were so good.
Like, they had this, like, old-timey music.
Because this is kind of set...
When would this be set?
Like, the 1930s?
That's a guess.
I could be completely wrong.
So, it had this old-timey music to, like, get you in the vibe.
It had sound effects.
The narrator was great.
And then Scribd, like, took the audiobooks off.
And I can't even get them on Audible.
Like, I cannot get these audiobooks anywhere.
So, I just decided to start reading the physical books.
I don't even know if I'm going to vlog myself, like, reading these in the future.
It might just be something I kind of pick up when I'm feeling like it.
Because they're super short.
And I don't think many people are going to be interested in hearing my thoughts on Nancy Drew the Bungalow Mystery.
But it's just something that's a bit of a comfort read to me.
I really like, like, cosy mysteries.
And so, yeah.
I really love these, like, editions as well.
I think they're so cute.
Like, so cute and diddy with, like, these illustrations on the front.
Like, I just love it.
It's just like a mem- It just brings up a memory for me of, like, playing Nancy Drew.
So, I'm super happy to own this.
And I can finally carry on with the series.
And then, finally, they got me Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson.
So, this is the sequel to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, which I gave five stars on my Reddit earlier this year.
This is a young adult murder mystery series.
And it's really cool in that it's told through these multimedia elements.
So, you have these interviews, these, like, logs that our protagonist is writing.
You have, like, the internet searches.
It's really, really cool in the way that it's told.
And I just cannot wait to get to this second book.
I'm really, really excited.
These are really good YA murder mysteries.
I think it's generally the best YA murder mysteries that I've read.
Well, I've only read one of them.
So, I need to carry on with the series.
I think in this one, someone in Pip, the protagonist's life goes missing.
And so, she's trying to find whether they're alive or what's happening.
I also think she may be running, like, a podcast in this one.
Like, a murder mystery podcast.
I'm not sure.
But I'm super excited to get into this.
This is one that I do have planned in a video.
So, it has the possibility of being read soon.
I just love how these are written.
So good.
Pretty legendary, if you ask me.
I love it.
Then, Molly from Mind of Molly very kindly bought me two books.
The first is Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert.
Oh, my God.
So, I read Get a Life, Chloe Brown.
And I really enjoyed it.
Like, I'm not a big romance reader.
I really don't, like, ever really rate romance that high.
And I gave it four stars.
I really enjoyed it.
I do have Take a Hint, Dani Brown.
And now, I have Act Your Age, Eve Brown.
So, I have the second two to make my way through.
I think Eve, as a sister, is kind of, like, the hot mess of the family.
Like, we can relate.
She's kind of a hot mess.
And she meets this guy who I think is a bit more, like, uptight and a perfectionist.
And so, their personalities clash.
So, I'm really excited to get into this.
And Molly also sent me The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon.
Now, this is one of their, like, favourite books.
Apprehensive, nervous, bit scared, also weirdly calm, perhaps on the verge of hysteria.
So, I definitely feel a lot of pressure.
This is a super popular fantasy book on BookTube.
A lot of people really love The Bone Season.
And I... I'm scared of it.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit intimidated.
I don't know if it's gonna end up being my kind of fantasy.
But I really wanna give it a go, because so many people love it.
I spoke the other day about how I really love, like, soft, mysterious, floaty fantasy.
And I feel like this is a bit more, like, high, serious fantasy.
And, like, I don't know.
I don't know how I'm gonna feel about it, but I'm super excited to try it.
But I am scared.
Not gonna lie.
Not gonna lie to you, I'm terrified.
And then my parents sent me two books for Easter as a gift as well.
Firstly, they sent me The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune.
This is another five-star prediction.
I am so excited to read this.
I'm gonna be reading it really soon.
Like, really, really, really, really, really, really, really soon.
I'm scared, because I wanna love it so bad.
Like, I'm actually terrified, because I've only heard good things.
So this is about an orphanage with these children who have the possibility to end the world.
And we have, like, a caseworker who has to go and kind of, like, judge whether they're safe.
And I think he falls in love.
I've heard it's like, he falls in love with the guy who runs the orphanage.
And I've heard it's just, like, soft and enchanting and, like, whimsical and just, like, so gorgeously written.
So I cannot wait to get to this.
They also sent me Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston.
So this is for a video that I'm doing really soon.
And I hadn't- this hadn't been on my radar.
And then I heard a lot of people speak about it.
Like, everyone was saying it's the best middle grade they've ever read.
Like, it's instantly become one of their favorite middle grades.
So I just had to try it.
I'm really intrigued.
I've actually already read the first 50 pages of this, but I had to swap around, like, some videos that I was doing.
So it's been put on hold.
But I really did love the first 50 pages of this that I have already read.
It's really told in this really funny way where it's got a lot of humor to it.
But it's told- what I love about it is that it's real life.
We start off in Amari's, like, real life.
It's very, like, grounded in reality.
And then, like, the magic and the weirdness starts.
And I feel like I'm only at the beginning of that.
This last book that I've left to the end is when I find out that this happened.
We are going to pretend we didn't hear that.
This is one of the oldest books on my TBR.
I'm pretty sure my first ever, like, what's on my TBR video, where I think I had-
I think when I started my channel, I had 20 unread books.
20.
20?
Like, 20.
I think I have 150 now?
Oh my goodness, I'm so embarrassed.
Don't be embarrassed. They love you.
But this is one of the oldest books on my TBR.
And I lost it.
It's not even mine, it was my mum's, and I lost it.
So I needed it for a video that I'm doing.
And so my boyfriend sent it to me.
So it's gifted, kind of.
And it is The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arakawa.
Look at the cat! I love cats so much.
I love cats so much.
Oh my god, let me put in here, because it's at the end of the video.
So if you're here, you'll care.
My parents sent me pictures of my cats yesterday.
And look at that.
One of them's missing, but look at those two.
Oh my god, I love them so much.
So what I know about this is that it is this person going on an adventure with their cat.
I don't really know. I've heard it's very emotional and very touching.
My mum has read this and she really liked it.
And I just love cats. I will always read about cats.
Cats, cats, cats. Like, I'm sold when it comes to, if you mention cats.
Oh my god, I don't want to pick this up.
No, don't call.
It was at this moment that he knew he fucked up.
Oh, ****. I can't believe you've done this.
That's all the books that I've received in the past few months.
Put them down before I mess up anything again.
Let me know if you've read any of these and what you thought of them,
what ones you think I'm gonna enjoy the most.
I'm very intrigued about what you guys think.
If you've gotten to the end of this video, comment...
Comment a red or a pink heart emoji.
I feel like we need, like, some hearts.
We need some hearts in the comments.
So comment a red or a pink heart emoji,
and I will see you very soon in another video.
Bye!
