Hi everyone, it's Helen here. Today I will be making chocolate cake or Banh Cho Co La.
As you know in Vietnam we don't really have a baking culture and in the traditional Vietnamese
kitchen there's actually no oven. So ingredients like wheat flour or fresh milk are not that
commonly used. Remember in the old days the only occasion that I would be able to eat western cakes
are on birthdays. Some history about this recipe when I was living in Germany and I was holding
a party at home. A friend of mine brought this chocolate cake to the party and after I gave it
a try I was like so surprised because I couldn't believe that a guy can make such a delicious cake.
So I asked him for the recipes and after he shared with me the recipe I was even more surprised
because it's actually so easy. Basically you just measure all the ingredients and mix them
together and bake. So since then this chocolate cake is like my secret weapon. Every time I need
to bake a cake to give to someone's birthdays or some special occasion I would definitely make
this chocolate cake because I know that I would never mess up with it. So today I'm really really
glad to share with you this recipe. So let's begin.
The ingredients you're gonna need 250 gram of butter, 90 gram cacao powder, 300 gram sugar,
225 gram of all-purpose flour, 185 gram milk, 4 eggs, one and a half teaspoon of baking powder
and 140 grams of coconut flakes. For the chocolate icing of the cake you're gonna need 125 gram of
whipping cream and 150 gram of dark chocolate. Firstly crack the eggs in a bowl and beat up
lightly. Then add the milk and mix well. In a larger mixing bowl mixing all the dry ingredients
the all-purpose flour, sugar, cacao powder and baking powder. I prefer sifting all the
ingredients to avoid the lumps. Also add all the coconut flakes. It's the coconut flakes that give
the cake an amazing taste and make it taste really special compared to other chocolate cakes that I
have tried. Then make a hole in the center and pour in the egg mixture and also the butter.
You can also melt the butter in the microwave first so it can mix in faster. It's really hot
where I live right now so I just mix in the butter. It's gonna melt in the cake batter anyway.
Just mix them all up to get a really shiny butter. There's no special mixing method for this cake,
you just mix in whatever method that you like. Then pour the butter into the cake pan
lightly with some parchment paper to avoid sticking. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 degrees
Celsius for one hour. When you insert a skewer into the center of the cake and it comes out clean,
that's when it's fully cooked. Remove the cake from the pan and let it rest on a rack to cool
down completely. Next break up the chocolate and place in a bowl. Then place the bowl over a saucepan
of water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water. Add in the cream and
bring the saucepan of water to a boil. Stir occasionally to help the chocolate melt.
When the chocolate and cream are fully incorporated, it will look like this. Let
it cool down a little and then we can spread the chocolate icing all over the cake. If you
can't manage to get the chocolate cover evenly on the surface of the cake, that's completely okay
because we're gonna sprinkle some more cacao powder over it. For the size, you can do some
sort of pattern that you like. I just do it simple like this. That's it. It's done. You
can put candles on top if you're making for someone's birthday. I'm just gonna put some
cute Usagi pigs that I got from Japan. They are so kawaii. Now I can't wait to cut out a slice.
The chocolate cake is so dense and moist. The coconut flakes really make the taste outstanding.
If you are a chocolate and coconut lover at the same time, then this cake is a total must try.
Plus, it's so easy to make and you can never go wrong with the recipe. If you like this video,
