Odyssey, one of the ultimate classics of western literature, was written by the Greek poet Homer in the eighth century BC.
The poem tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who wanders for ten years after the Trojan War, attempting to return home.

The Odyssey Narrative
The Odyssey is not written in a chronological order. The reader starts in the middle of the story, only learning about previous events from Odysseus' retelling. The first four books establish the setting in Ithaca. Odysseus' wife, Penelope, and their young son, Telemachus, are powerless in the face of her arrogant suitors, who are desperate for Odysseus' return from the siege of Troy. Telemachus is looking for information about his father, who hasn't been heard from since he left for war nearly 20 years ago. He travels secretly to the Peloponnese in search of two men who fought alongside Odysseus in the Trojan War, Nestor and Menelaus, and discovers that his father is still alive.

The main character, Odysseus, is introduced in the second four books (V-VIII), as he is being released from captivity by the nymph Calypso on the island of Ogygia. He is shipwrecked and lands on the shores of Scheria, the Phaeacian homeland. In Books IX-XII, Odysseus tells the Phaeacians about his and his crew's perilous journey home, including encounters with lotus-eaters, Laestrygonians, and the sorceress Circe, their narrow escape from the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus, their ordeal navigating between Scylla and Charybdis, and the final shipwreck on Ogygia alone.

Finally, in Books XIII-XXIV, the poem's second half, Odysseus returns to Ithaca, where he encounters unexpected obstacles and danger. He meets with his protector-goddess Athena and reveals himself to his faithful swineherd Eumaeus first, and then to Telemachus, before devising a complicated plan to evict the suitors. During Odysseus' absence, Penelope resisted the pestering of over a hundred suitors, who had gathered in Odysseus' house, eating, drinking, and carousing while she was away. Odysseus kills them all in order to reunite with his wife, with the help of Telemachus, Eumaeus, and Philoetius (a servant and cowherd).
