Hi, it's Pat Patterson with the Best Los Angeles Award, and I'm here with Izzy Freeman.
Izzy's famous celebrity deli here in Santa Monica. Izzy, congratulations on your award.
Thank you.
I appreciate you taking the time, getting a Diet Coke.
It's my pleasure.
I've ordered a sandwich. What could be better?
This is the home of the overstuffed sandwich, when I order a sandwich.
I'm so excited. So when did you open the deli?
In August of 1973.
Wow, so that's been a while.
And it's been 45 years of open 24-7.
Oh my gosh.
This restaurant has never been closed for a 24-hour period,
but every now and then we'll close for maintenance or something.
Just last Monday, we closed to shoot another Curb Your Enthusiasm film here.
So this is the deli featured in Larry David's show.
This is the third time that he's filmed here.
How great. That's exciting.
And so you are a fixture here, obviously.
I mean, it must be very gratifying to have all the relationships you've had over the years.
It's amazing because wherever I go, if I mention Izzy's Deli, because my name is Izzy.
Right.
Oh my God, I've been there. You're Izzy.
You know, they think I'm a celebrity, but I'm not.
What's your favorite dish here?
Well, I like pastrami.
Okay.
I'm a New Yorker. I like hot dogs. I like all the junk food.
How many sandwiches have you probably served over the years?
Oh God, thousands and thousands and thousands.
The funny thing here is that being across the street from the hospital,
we have so many fathers that are here waiting for their wives to give birth.
And over the years, the kids that were born there come in as adults.
You know, my dad was here when my mom was giving birth across the street.
I mean, it's very gratifying.
Yeah.
Plus, I have second generation employees that are working there now.
Whoa.
So you're one of those places where people stick around.
Sons and daughters of employees that started with me, which are still here,
now their kids are working here.
That is amazing. That is amazing.
You guys are involved in the community. Name some of the things that you're...
I'm on the National Board of City of Hope.
Okay.
I'm very involved with the Jewish Home for the Aging.
Okay.
I'm past president of the Guardians.
Right now, I'm co-chairman of the Board of Governors of the Home.
Well, you've done a lot of incredible things. We appreciate the time.
And we're going to enjoy a sandwich.
Absolutely.
