This year, California is having another terrible wildfire season. Last year was considered a record-setting year: Fires burned across roughly 4.5 million acres, or an area larger than Rhode Island. And this year is pacing to be even worse. As of July 19, fire had already consumed 2.5 million acres of forest, compared with 1.8 million acres at the same time last year.

We could give a lot more stats on the number of separate fires, the cost of damage, and lives lost. But stats don’t tell much of a story. There’s no context; no information about choices made and why; and no lessons learned. That’s what we discuss with Alex Epstein, the author of the New York Times best-seller “The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels” and the founder of the Center for Industrial Progress.
