How to Encourage Independent Play
Independent play means an ability to play alone, even for a few minutes at a time.
Why is independent play important?
Learning to play on their own is an essential step in growth for children. Some of the benefits of independent play can be:
* Fostering imagination and creative play.
When there isn't an adult present to direct things, children can be more creative - there is less need to conform to specific rules or explain their play to another else, and they can just go wherever their imagination takes them.
* Building persistence and problem-solving skills.
Without an adult to help or step in with suggestions, children can experiment with their own ways of problem-solving.
* Having some quiet time.
With TV and computer games, children don't get as many opportunities to allow their brains to be silent. Independent play brings peace and relaxation to children.
* Teaching patience and resilience.
Children must understand at some time that their parents cannot always be at their beck and call. Knowing how to play independently and wait for help can teach children patience and give them the confidence to realize they can do things independently.
