Christine De France - A Powerful Duchess
Marie Christine de France was born on 10 February 1606 in Paris and died on 27 December 1663 in Turin. She was a French princess who, through marriage to Victor Amadeus I, was Duchess of Savoy from 1619. After the death of her husband in 1637, she assumed the regency of the duchy for her two sons.
The regency was not without controversy and when civil war broke out, Christine sought help from her brother Louis XIII of France, with whose assistance she ultimately gained the upper hand in Savoy. Her close ties to France forced the regent to make some concessions to her brother and his first minister Richelieu, but she was always careful to minimize France's influence on Savoy-Piedmont. Through skillful tactics, Maria Christine was not only able to preserve the duchy for her son, but also avoided it falling into the hands of France. Charles Emmanuel II only took over the reins of government himself after her death in 1663 at the age of twenty-nine.
