In this video, the two speakers, Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris, take us to the room called 'the Stanza della Segnatura'; its four walls are painted with Raphael's famous frescoes.

The speakers introduce the painting 'The School of Athens', a part of Raphael's commission to decorate the room.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raffaello (1483 - 1520), is an Italian painter and architect. He is one of three famous masters of the Renaissance, together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

At a young age, Raphael was trained by Italian Renaissance painter Pietro Perugino.

'The School of Athens' was painted from 1509 to 1511 when Raphael moved to Rome at the invitation of the Pope.

The fresco depicts a congregation of philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists from Ancient Greece. They are Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Archimedes, and Heraclitus.

In 'The School of Athens’, Raphael painted not only himself but in the center of the fresco he painted two great philosophers such as Leonardo da Vinci as Plato and Michelangelo as Heraclitus who are surrounded by other great thinkers and philosophers.

Watch the video and follow Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris to explore more about 'The School of Athens' and the Stanza della Segnatura, the room now known as the Stanze de Raffaello, originally a library, a part of the papal apartment where the Pope lived.
