Blenheim Palace is best known as Winston Churchill's birthplace, but the England’s world heritage site has many other fascinating traditions and secrets to explore
In this video, History Hit presenter Alice Loxton gives you a quick tour about Blenheim’s history and its secrets.
And here are some things you never knew about the Blenheim Estate:
A hunting lodge was constructed here, and in 1129 Henry I of England erected 7 miles (11 km) of walls to establish the first enclosed park where lions and leopards were housed. When Henry II, the great-grandson of Henry, visited with his lover Rosamund Clifford, the lodge was transformed into a palace.
In the 1490s, Henry VII reconstructed a portion of the palace. William Este was the mason, while Master George Gainesford oversaw the project. In 1507, he constructed the gatehouse. Elizabeth I as Princess is claimed to have stayed on the upper levels of the gatehouse in 1554, scratched writing with a diamond ring on the palace windows, and wrote with charcoal on a shutter. Her words were noted by the travelers Paul Hentzner and Henri, Duke of Rohan in 1600. A chamber in the gatehouse was eventually known as Queen Elizabeth's Chamber because of its arched oak ceiling, carvings, blue paint, and gilded accents.
The Great Hall at Blenheim Palace rises 67 feet to a decorative ceiling painted by James Thornhill. This section is ideal for a grand dinner and can be combined with the Saloon to provide a location for both dinner and beverages.

The Long Library or Gallery at the monumental Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England is 180 feet long and two stories in height. It was originally intended solely as an art gallery, but shortly after its decoration by Christopher Wren in 1725, it received the large collection of the Sunderland library (which it later sold). The incredible space contains magnificent dome ceilings, a large statue of Queen Anne and the largest pipe organ in private ownership in Europe.
