My friend Glyn from the UK sent me a tub of Yorkshire Grit to test and tell him what I think. Being who I am, I just had to make a video out of my impression of his new product! And what a test by me would be with some Olive turning... so a shiny goblet it is!!
Feel free to share and recommend this video to your friends and family, a thumbs up would be appreciated, and if this is your first time to my channel, you are most welcome to subscribe!
Hello, welcome back to my channel. In this week's video we're going to turn something out of this
nice branch of olive and for the first time on my channel I'm going to use a product to apply
a finish to the olive and we're going to see whether or not the olive creations that I usually
do on my channel looks good even with a shiny finish on them. In order for us to achieve this
goal I'm going to use this new product. This is Yorkshire Greet. It was sent to me by a friend
in the UK. You can see all the details about this product down there in the video description
as well as all the information about the music I'm using for my videos. So stay tuned
and I hope something nice works inside this.
So now you're a housewife with a place in Lake Cascade
and your husband's an architect it sounds like you've really got it made
is that your daughter in that picture she's got your pretty eyes blue
she got your crescent moon smile and that curly blonde hair just like you
okay so I finished roughing out this piece of branch and as you can see there is a promise of
very nice grain here and very nice color half of it is bright and spalted and half of it is
darker and has some interesting shapes and grain running through it and now is a very crucial point
in this project since I'm going to try and hollow this out before I complete the outside form
the problem is that olive is notoriously hard to hollow out
I can sit on my porch and just watch the old sycamore grow
thanks for coming now it's time for me to go
I wish you the best for another 10 years down the road
okay kind of like this so the reason I chose to go on and give this entirely thick lip
this curve here is because I really like this little feature here this little piece of spalting
the dark colors and I want to keep that so what I've decided is although my cup
it will be small I'm going to flare it out a lot and have a wide lip just to maintain this
this really beautiful grain here I hope you can see it yeah
so before I go any further I'm quite happy with the depth I'm in and with the shape
but there are a lot of cracks here I'm going to try and keep the CA as much along the cracks as
possible so I wouldn't stain the other parts of the wood in fact I just might give it a little bit
of oiling just so I will somehow prevent the CA from penetrating the wood where there isn't a crack
well I've never tried that so let's just add oiling the piece before applying the CA
to one of the things that I've never done and I'm trying on one of my videos
I don't want to give it a lot of oil I don't want to soak the wood in I just want to
give it a slight coating so if any of the CA runs over the wood
there might be a chance that it won't soak into the grain but just remain on the surface again
I have no idea if this is going to work I've never seen anyone do it even though it might be a very
would be a good time to stop with that and start sanding this out I hope my method worked and it
actually looked like it did because I don't see any staining of the CA on the wood itself
so my next step would be to simply sand this out to 240 maybe 320 we'll see how the sanding goes
and then we'll decide okay I have the inside of the goblet I now sanded it down to 320
now according to the instructions that came with the Yorkshire grit I'm supposed to
apply a sanding sealer and let it cure and then apply the wax but since I don't have any
sanding sealer of any kind at the moment I talked to Glyn the person that manufactured this
and he told me that boiled linseed oil will work just the same the reason for the sanding sealer
or in my case the boiled linseed oil to be applied before the wax is just to prevent from the wood
from leaching out the oils from the wax and the oil is needed to be a medium for the
powder that does the actual sanding so let's apply a layer of the boiled linseed oil
and then give it a couple of minutes to soak in and start applying the wax and see what it does
I'm going to leave it a couple of minutes to soak in and then I will wipe off the excess
and then I will start with the wax
okay it's been a couple of minutes and I've already wiped off the excess
I think that would be a good foundation for applying the wax
so using a paper towel I will work the wax into the wood and after I've worked it enough into the
wood and around I will start rubbing it under power and that is when the sanding process is
so let's open this thing together okay this is the wax itself
as far as I can tell no particular order and that is actually a welcome change from the
from the abrasive wax I usually use the triple e which smells like a gas station
so I'm going to take a small amount like so and work it into the wood
and it feels kind of gritty you can tell that there's some kind of
powder in there maybe I'm using too much I will simply wipe off some of the excess
okay
now it says to start the lathe at a low speed my lowest speed is around 500 rounds per minute
so that would have to be the speed I will send and I will start working the wax
into the wood using the same piece I've used to apply the wax
Yskif has left his job ran out of black keys to fleece
and I see the red moon rise we have something to look at now I need a pocket to hold
keep my change okay the next step would be to remove the residue
so I will take a clean piece of paper and I will take the speed of the lathe up
and I will continue rubbing the surface and the wax until my paper towel doesn't
take any of the wax out if you look at that that is just nice
that is just nice it feels perfectly smooth
if you look at that that is a glass surface I hope this comes out well in the video
absolutely beautiful I don't think I've ever seen olive this shiny and smooth
there's nothing to fear
watch the doors in the rear there's nothing to fear
docking bay is clear there is nothing to fear open up your little ears there's nothing to fear
casing the frontier
some diamonds in the clear
ends of the year decomposed it's not quite ours just yet the island two sticks in the mud
it's monuments we've stood ridiculous and good death defied
hey when all we ever needed
when all we needed was clean
satellites around a conspiracy of clouds gathering
words down the style
paint creatures set on fire
I want to thank you for joining me in this week's video
and I hope to see you back in my shop really soon
