To date (17 Nov 2020) we have not yet had our first frost in the south of England but I always like to try and get as much done this side of Christmas as I can, in terms of tidying up the garden for Winter. Then when Spring comes I’m ready to get going without having to start clearing up and cutting perennials back then. So as we had such glorious weather today I thought I had better make the most of it and get some clearing up jobs done.

Jeanette here from Enthusiastic Gardener and it's getting to the end of November now and
so it's a beautiful day today, so lovely and sunny, the sky is blue, so I have to come
out and what I'd like to do in the next couple of days, this weekend I hope, is to finish
up all my autumn tidying up and get everything ready for December because who knows what
the weather will be like and I would rather have all my garden tidied up this side of
Christmas and then when the spring comes I'm just ready to go again, I don't have to sort
everything out then. So, the first thing I want to do is put some fleece around this
Bougainvillea. So I've got some fleece here and I think all I need to do, I've never done
this before, I'm just going to wrap it double, that's a nice bit off. Now of course Bougainvilleas
are really Mediterranean plants but this one was so cheap, so I thought I'd give it a go
and it is looking so good now, I even have one tiny last flower, it's so pretty and I
love tapered leaves. So let's give it a go and see if we can help it to survive, wrap
this around, maybe just sort of tie it in a little bunch down here. As soon as we do
I've got some string and I'm going to wrap it round, it's all worth a try isn't it, who
knows, I can only try and it's in it's own little cocoon for the winter. Yeah, cute.
I think they lose their leaves, I'm not sure actually, but I do know that they bloom on
their current year's growth, so if they lose all their leaves that's fine and then that
means that you could prune it next year, in the spring I guess. Richard would think
I've gone bananas, I'm sure. There we are, so nice and protected for the winter. See
that's nice and protected and fingers crossed we'll see what that looks like. Right, next
job. And I'm going to take these Busy Lizzies out now, they still look quite vibrant and
I've tried some cuttings with them but the frost will get them very soon and I want to
clean all them up and I'm going to get some bulbs, maybe some daffodils or some more tulips
perhaps and put them in this container but unfortunately we are in our second lockdown
so there's no shopping for bulbs or containers at the moment, unfortunately. We're back to
that situation again. But I've really enjoyed these Busy Lizzies, Impatient Busy Lizzies,
they have been beautiful all summer long and they are one of my favourite things as animals
for the summer, I really do like them and they do well for me, they seem to like me.
And do you remember the honeysuckle here? And the honeysuckle, well I had loads of problems
with the honeysuckle, mildew and everything. So I'm hoping next year it will do better,
we shall see. So that's that, all nice and clean. So I'll try and get some bulbs when
our lockdown is over, hopefully, if our lockdown is over, then I can put some bulbs in there,
tulips and daffodils or something like that and then that will look really nice in the
So again, anything that is likely to get hit by the frost, I'm taking out now, so they're
the last of my peregriniums. And then we've got these Busy Lizzies as well, they can grow
and this soil is actually really dry, which I hadn't noticed. Some bulbs in here too,
that's a good idea.
Right, so I'm going to chop down my verbena, just to the base. I must give you a quick
update of these peregrinium cuttings, they're not looking too good are they? I mean six
have completely died, six are dying. So please tell me in the comments, what did I do wrong?
They were on my windowsill and I was watering them. Occasionally, if it looked really dry,
they had hormone routine powder in. The ones that I potted up, they are looking good, they
are inside and they're looking okay. But these ones, comments are welcome.
And my peregrine flowers.
Okay, so that's some of the autumn tidy and done, which is good. So I hope to be able
to do the last bit maybe tomorrow and of course we never know what the weather's going to
be like, so we have to grab every opportunity. Anyway, I hope you're having fun in your gardens.
Take care and I will see you very soon and goodbye.
