How Papyrus was Made | Ancient Egypt for Kids | Learning Made Fun
What is Papyrus?
Papyrus is a strong, paper-like material that was used by the Ancient Egyptians thousands of years ago to to write on. The paper was made from the Papyrus plant that grew in the River Nile and was also used to make boats, clothing, baskets and more.
How is it Made?
In today's lesson you will see a fascinating demonstration on the making of papyrus paper. Check it out:
• Papyrus was made by cutting strips of the inner part of the Papyrus plant.
• After doing so the strips were hit with a hammer to remove moisture and then soaked in pure water for a few days to remove reduce the percentage of sugar in the plant tissue. In doing so, the strips became naturally sticky.
• Next, the strips were weaved in and out of each other by laying them horizontally and vertically.
• After this, the strips were pressed together. In the video, it is mentioned that this may have been done by using rocks but in reality we are still not sure of the exact method used by the Ancient Egyptians.
• Finally, the Papyrus was left to to form Papyrus Paper as we know it.
