Taste of Fethiye with Holiday Extras _ Ölüdeniz and Fethiye, Turkey _ The Travel Foundation
Good morning from Turkey guys! This week I am exploring the city of Fethiye with Holiday Extras.
We are just headed for breakfast and we are going to a really nice local restaurant that
uses all sustainable ingredients and locally farmed produce.
That's semisotu and that's grown very naturally. Cream and honey and that'll be homemade cream.
And the produce they grow here as well so this region particularly is known for this.
That was so good and so much food there was no way we could finish all of it but we really
tried and now I'm gonna take you inside the kitchen. So this is where all the magic happens.
So that was breakfast and now we've walked around 10 meters and right in the backyard
of the restaurant is this museum of nomadic history and culture. It turns out that the
owner of the restaurant is really interested in Turkey's past how it came to being so he
has collected all these artifacts over the years that he is now sharing with the public.
And I'm not traveling alone. I am joined by these two wonderful ladies from Holiday Extras.
So this is Abby and this is Caroline. Yay! So the reason we're in Fethiye this week is the
Taste of Fethiye project run by the Travel Foundation and the project is completely
focused on bringing together local farmers and producers and local businesses such as
hotels and restaurants and creating this perfect marriage where all the locals are the ones
benefiting but it's not the only cool project that the Travel Foundation are running in the
area. So the second project that we're visiting just for a brief afternoon is the Blue Wave
project which is focused on sustainability and conservation in the sailing industry and this
marina is one of the best examples of good practice in the world and it's also really
gorgeous so I want to show you the views. This is Goçek and it's probably the place in Turkey
for its boating, for the sea, for the islands and with the Blue Wave project that we're working on
the aim is to preserve this because if you look out there you can see just how beautiful it is.
Oh and in case you're wondering, yes the flower in my hair is sustainably and locally sourced. I
just picked it off the floor but honestly sometimes the simplest solutions are the
most effective. Give people a recycling bin and they will use it. We've just arrived to Ilker's
farm who is one of the 50 farmers working on the Taste of Hatia project and she promised to
personally teach me a thing or two about farming so I am very excited to learn something new and
hopefully I'm not going to create absolute chaos which has happened before so.
These are really delicious. Here on the farm Ilker grows everything from tomatoes and aubergines to
fresh chilies which I kind of accidentally tried.
Oh you're gonna be kissing. I know what I'm taking back home. Ilker has just kindly offered to pack
up these aubergines and I am taking them with me to England because of course I am. I'm so excited.
And now we're driving back to hotel for dinner but before that we have decided to make a
pit stop in a place called Kaya village. This is where the Greek people used to live in the 1920s
before they were forced to do a very curious population exchange. So some of the Turkish
people living in Greece came here and the Greeks living in Turkey were forced to go back to their
country even though they were born here in Turkey and it's quite a fascinating story that actually
piqued the interest of some really prominent writers like Louis de Bernier. So you can read
his book Birds Without Wings which is all about Kaya and his history. Just a quick note whenever
you see poor little camels and donkeys by the side of the road like this please don't write them.
It breaks my little heart to see them suffer in the heat and it's just a really really terrible
thing to do so please don't. So we're eating dinner in this beautiful romantic restaurant. We are
completely filthy, unwashed, really sweaty but you know what sometimes you just gotta roll with the
and this is worth it. Good morning guys. We have just sat down for breakfast and this is what we
were presented with. We're just walking toward the market now and exploring a bit of Fethiye.
Turns out this town is actually really gorgeous. There's so many beautiful fountains and so many
different statues to see so I'm going to show you a few now. We're in Fethiye market and as you can
see it's very popular. There are tons of people, locals and tourists alike. Loads of celeries and
the local produce looks just amazing. If you like sugar or diabetes this is going to be your new
favorite drink. This is the sweetest thing I've had in week. Have you guys ever tried yellow cherries?
Because I haven't and cherries are my favorite fruit. These are extremely sweet. That's really
really good. So what's really unique about this fish market is that you buy your fish in the
center and then you choose one of the restaurants around you and they will cook the fish for you
This was the very first grocery of Fethiye and I remember coming here when I was very small
doing the shopping with my father and it was really lovely and it still is very nice.
I'm here with Meryem and her own shop which she has had first. Yes it's my family business
about 38 years. Amazing and these are completely homemade. Yes. And how do you make them?
We put inside corn starch, sugar, water and lemon. After you can see some is with the chocolate,
some is with different nuts but all the Turkish delight is gluten, dairy and eggs free. Keeps
six months in the room temperature. Oh it's vegan, it's perfect. Thank you, thank you.
Teşekkür ederim. You're welcome, you're welcome. Tonight we're dining at Mosaic restaurant and
they just brought out the meze's which look amazing. Good morning from Fethiye. This is
becoming a bit of a trend but I'm on a boat again and this time it's a gorgeous gulat.
Apparently the best one in all of Fethiye so we're pretty lucky. You know I hate being preachy
but you actually have to come here. This place, Fethiye and the surrounding area is incredible
and not that many people seem to know about it for whatever reason and this goes for me as well.
I'd never heard about it prior to visiting but look at the view behind me. We've just stopped
for lunch at the Belgicus Beach Club which is a gorgeous five-star hotel in the bay and they have
some of the most incredible views of the paragliders landing. By the way paragliding
is one of the biggest draws for this area and it's really cool because the mountains are really
tall and you're just descending upon the coastline so the views are just incredible.
If you have any reservations about coming here by the way, please don't. It's incredible. There
there's nothing terrible happening here aside from overeating. The overeating is quite terrible.
Look at me guys! It's my last night in Fethiye and I'm really sad. I had pretty much no expectations
coming into this and my mind is just blown honestly. It's been so incredible. The people
I've met along the way, the food I've eaten, the final taste of Fethiye. So sad. Well I've just
landed in the UK a few hours ago. I've driven all the way to my boyfriend's house and I brought him
a little present. Now you may remember when we were at the farm I took a bag of groceries
essentially and here they are. So this is all the stuff I've brought. Some of it didn't really
survive the journey but most of it did. I kept it in the mini bar for three days. Now it's going in
my face. Well thank you for watching. If you enjoyed this video please don't forget to give
it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel and go to the Travel Foundation's website to check out
more of their projects because they're all amazing but this one is the tastiest. It tastes damn good.
Yeah. So I'm sure you've heard of BYOB but have you heard of BYOF?
Break your own fish. This is amazing.
