Navigation
Naturally a very important almost essential topic navigation especially in tidal areas
We will also go into it separately within this subject area
And we are very happy that were able to secure a very competent
person for this namely Clemens from the MCO Sailing Academy
Unfortunately an Austrian but all the more a skilled sailor who
is particularly familiar with many sailing areas around the world
He is a Royal Yacht Master Instructor so he knows what he's talking about
And we want to bring this to you in a classic analog way
Just simple to make the basics much clearer for you
with classic aids such as tide atlases Reeds and area guides etc
And to make this as practical as possible we have come up with a specific training session here
from the English south coast across the English Channel to the Channel Islands
Clemens let's go
Such a trip should naturally be as much fun as possible it should be relaxing the
skipper should be confident and the crew should always feel well taken care of
Feel naturally secure and safe
And exactly for that reason we need a lot of preparation for this event to go so well
Obviously there is a lot to do but it's definitely worth it if it's really fun
Point 1 we definitely need up-to-date paper charts we need them urgently
We also have to go along no question especially in our time of digitalization
where everyone will already prepare themselves with digital maps
Because many things just go more easily let's put it that way
Still please don't forget we have to navigate analogously by law
Point 2 apart from nautical charts we need information on many many topics
And what I have in my hand here is something like
the Bible of west European Atlantic coast sailors the Reeds Almanac
This Reed's Almanac contains so incredibly valuable
information that we can't afford to be without it
Specifically at the beginning of the Reed we have general information about sailing in tidal waters
On the topics of communication security weather and more
Incredibly valuable information except that then in the later parts
They include the tide tables for the respective standard ports as well as the tide curves
Also the Reeds Almanac or a similar work certainly a genuine reference book for our sailing area
I am noting Reed's Almanac
Okay the Reed's Almanac is not the same as a game management guide
The game management guide itself gives us a different kind of insight into the area
Rather with images rather with information about small harbors
He gives us an overall impression of the area and is clearly different from the Reeds Almanac
I would therefore recommend that we have both items with us at least in the preparation
Because the information only partially overlaps and in part we do have separate information here
Also let's note that would be the game warden
Well one two three already important points and we are
already on the safe side regarding the basic information
I said we are in a tidal area and tides are very challenging
But they are also extremely impressive and an incredibly great sailcloth
and it is incredible to sail in the tidal waters
And of course one must always be clear about where the current is flowing from and to and how strong it is
What's the overall situation with the currents right now in my area
And the good captain should really know at all times what the current flow looks like
I have prepared a tidal stream atlas for the Solent and around the Isle of Wight
You can see the Isle of Wight here and here the Solent the narrow waterway between the Isle of Wight and the main island of England
We also have a tide current atlas with
us We are still missing points 5 and 6
It is of course crucial that we can communicate continuously while on the move
It could happen we all hope not we don't hope for it but it could be that we have to communicate quickly in an emergency
We need for example the radio channels from the Coast Guard stations we need the phone numbers
We also need information about the different weather forecasting
stations etc This information can once again be found in the Reeds Almanac
You can also find this valuable information about communication and weather right here
Another reason to have this almanac with you
We write this down here regarding communication plus weather
And the entire data we read from these works which we can summarize from these five points
We will then summarize it in a passage plan
Making a route plan is a very very great task and gives us incredible security in the end when we are on the way
This means we summarize our results and of course do not forget to add the current weather
This is something very important We are sailing with the wind so we need to know where the wind is coming from no question
We need to be prepared for weather changes etc
This topic will also be included in the passage plan
And the passage plan is essentially a higher-level plan for the entire expected traffic
Our fundamental framework for the secure and sovereign execution of a turn
It should be fun so let's get started
