All common mooring maneuvers with bow anchor Roman Catholic investor bow and stern anchor as well as stern anchor to the pier
In addition there are plenty of tips and tricks as well as a few additional docking maneuvers
To ensure you know what you're getting the first maneuver is the Roman Catholic method of anchoring with the bow anchor
Our third tutorial describes a combination of harbor and mooring maneuvers known as the so-called Roman Catholic mooring with a bow anchor
As usual first to the preparations
After we have prepared the dinghy trailer we put enough fenders on both sides and at the stern of our boat
Using one or more large-diameter ball bearings is recommended here
In addition two mooring lines are secured to the two stern lights and are already prepared for casting or passing
When traveling with a crew it is also important to clearly define and discuss the individual roles and responsibilities of the crew members in advance
We are now backing up our mooring spot
Performing the maneuver with the bow anchor should ideally be done at a right angle to the pier to position the anchor as straight as possible in front of the bow
Depending on the chain on board the anchor ground and the water depth we will now drop the bow anchor
In our example that's about 30 meters of chain that we start to veer at approximately three ship lengths away from the pier
As soon as the anchor touches the bottom and we have let out enough chain we stop the chain from running and lower the anchor into the ground with sufficient reverse power
Care must be taken as the anchor should hold well but the boat must not come to a complete stop when entering in order to remain maneuverable
Also we shouldn't be too close to the dock when dropping the anchor
If the anchor is securely set in the seabed more links are now added to the chain to pull the last section to the pier
There we ease off the gas enough for our boat to come to a stop although it is not pulled forward again directly from the deployed chain
This also requires some sense and practice
To secure the boat on land we first pass the sturdy stern line and quickly fasten it to the corresponding cleat
After that we can briefly disengage the engine and then proceed with forward throttle and the appropriate rudder position to ease into the released stern line and thus control the boat's position
Stand firm now pass the second stern line and as the final duty pull the bow line until it takes the strain
But be careful that the anchor does not break free for this reason
To relieve the load from the anchor winch I also recommend here to ease the chain with a suitable safety hook and a line
