How did you get started?
Well, it was a very circuitous route.
You know, I was, when I was a kid, about seven years old, I'd go to these westerns at the
Majestic Theater in Lamesa, Texas.
And I'd watch these people on the screen in these little B-westerns.
And I realized pretty early on that I didn't want to be the hero because he's always got
to be clean.
And have his shirts pressed and all that stuff.
So I kind of wanted to be like Gabby Hayes or Fuzzy Jones or one of those guys, you know?
Yeah.
One of the sidekicks.
Because they get to have all the fun and they don't have to take a bath.
You're the son of an iconic actor, a very busy actor.
What was your experience like?
They went through so much trouble to do stuff for us as kids.
He built a two-story clubhouse in our backyard.
I did.
Yeah, he did.
You did yourself.
Yeah, I built it.
It had a trap door with a little pit underneath that we could go through.
It was amazing.
And then there was one year where, for my birthday, they put on a whole carnival.
They built carnival booths and had people running the carnival.
We had haunted houses.
It was great.
We had a great, picturesque childhood when I was young.
Where did you get your inspiration from?
You're an amazing father.
Where did you learn that?
I guess training horses, I suppose.
So there's not too much difference between training an unruly horse and an unruly kid.
You've got to make it think it's their idea.
Yeah, there's a relationship that develops, though, with a horse.
The horse has got to trust you.
You've got to trust the horse.
Well, that's the main thing, build trust.
And the same thing's got to happen with a kid.
