Inside Central America’s LARGEST Market — (literally on top of a volcano lol)
Good morning guys and welcome back to the channel from the
cute little town of, here it is, I'll give you five seconds to try it out.
You know, I was told that everybody calls it Xela, apparently it's pronounced like
Quetzaltenango, supposedly. Very, very, very cute little town. I like it how normal it is.
Look at this, how chill. Beautiful little church. This is the Park of Central
America is what it's called. Very cozy. So today we're going on a nice little fun
morning time adventure. The sun is just now coming up. We're going to one of
the biggest animal markets in all of Central America. Let's head back to the
car, actually. I don't know why I'm walking this way, but... Okay, so we've
arrived at the market now, up on top of the mountain. As you can see, behind us, as you
see behind us, we have the volcanoes in the distance. Apparently this market is
literally on top of a volcano. I guess that could be the thumbnail title, I
don't know. But this is the little village of San Francisco Alto, so this is
where all the authentic Mayans are.
Okay, so we found where the market is. Our goal is... Good morning. Our goal is that this is
the place that you can find chickens, you can find pigs, you can find cows, you can
find anything. So, the thing I'm looking for is a cowboy hat, some traditional
clothes, just to talk to some people. Sounds nice. But, uh, let's start off by talking with all the chickens.
This is actually a turkey. Going turkey.
You know, these are all just chickens, crazy chickens.
Hi bro, do you want to come home with me? Yeah? No?
What do you think? Do you want a pig? We were telling our mom, we were joking with our mom
that if we're going to buy a pig, we're going to bring a pig home.
Look at all these little piggies. They're ready to come home.
You know, I'm curious, Brynn, does it scare you to be in a market like this? No.
Because, uh, everybody's so confused. Um, you know, we don't have anything like this.
We have nothing like this in the United States. You know, this is like, it's a mix between
like the bazaar, this is only on Fridays, mix between like the bazaar and kind of like
a, kind of like a little auction, little market, where people are selling old phones, all kinds
of random stuff, food wrapped in leaves. It looks delicious.
And by delicious, I mean kind of unsanitary, but delicious.
Okay.
Okay, so we've got our hat now. It looks a little bit more proper.
I was going for, uh, maybe green, verde, but all we have today is brown.
All the kids... You know, I will say what's really interesting and fun about this market
is that since it's all just Mayans, Mayans are very short people, and so I am clearly
a full head above everybody else. Like, I can see over the entire crowd.
You guys can see my vantage point later on.
Yes. Changing in the market. Brilliant.
Anyway, that's going to wrap it up here for the market.
Um, it's back here. Like I said, it's only on Fridays.
Uh, it starts every morning actually at like 4 or 5 a.m., but, uh, that's really early.
You can see, maybe in the video, but there's a lot of, uh, a lot of the kids are sleeping
on piles of clothes, because the kids have been up all morning.
All the villagers that are coming from this entire surrounding area, and this is the one
big, uh, the one big proper market.
They say that once it gets to the full size that it's the largest market in Central America.
And I actually probably would agree with that, because it's solidly probably one square kilometer.
Okay, so that's going to wrap it up here for the market.
I don't know what we're going to do for the rest of the day.
We'll go chill. Go into the mountains. I don't know.
Goodbye.
Anyway, that's going to wrap it up here for the Quetzaltenango region.
Quetzaltenango.
I would say that this is the most authentic, most lively, most normal side of Guatemala.
I would recommend coming out to this area.
Beautiful little places, good food, nice culture.
Everybody looks at you, because there's no tourists here.
Just chill.
Anyway.
Vamos.
