Hi friends! Thank you for joining me today. I'm about to have a cup of tea and work on a little
sewing project. I've been working on an 18th century men's shirt inspired by Bernadette
Banner. She has a video on her YouTube that I initially followed with a previous shirt,
but I've decided to try and redo it. The first one didn't turn out too great.
This one's turning out better, but not nearly as good as Bernadette Banner's.
I sewed the sleeves a few days ago, so I've got the gusset and the arm of the sleeve and the cuff
already sewn. Here I'm just marking the top of the shoulder, like the very tip, with a pin
and I'm running a gathering thread just through the top of the shoulder,
which is about three inches. I'll measure here in a minute.
I do that on either side. I didn't film sewing the sleeves or anything, but I figured that
today's a really nice day and I have the time, so I figured I'd just sew some
steps. I'm giving myself about a thumb's width, maybe about an inch, a little less, of seam
allowance. You can measure that, but I'm not putting that much effort into this one.
Kind of just winging it. Now I've got the top of the sleeve, which will be the shoulder.
I've got that all gathered, so it'll be a little puffy and it'll be really nice.
I'm doing the same thing on the other side. I'm marking the tip of the shoulder.
That way, when I go to attach the sleeve to the body of the shirt,
I can line that up with the shoulder of the body.
One of the hardest things when you first start sewing is threading the needle. I've had a lot
of practice recently, so I've gotten better at it, but good golly, I used to get so frustrated.
Here's me realizing that I did not measure on the other sleeve, but I want to make them match,
so I'm going back and I'm going to measure how much fabric I've gathered at the top of the sleeve,
which did end up being about three inches down. Six inches of fabric gathered total,
with the center being the tip of the shoulder. I got this pretty new measuring tape at the
Jefferson Hotel today. We went there for afternoon tea, and they had this measuring
tape in the gift shop. Here I am measuring on the new sleeve that I have yet to gather,
and I'm just making sure that it's the same length down on either side, so three inches,
which is just a running stitch. You definitely don't want to backstitch because you won't be
able to pull the fabric tight. And there you have it, another gathered sleeve. I'll secure
the gathers with pins later, but I'm gonna put that on pause and work on the body of the shirt,
and then I'll be able to attach the sleeves once the body is sewn.
I've got the body of the shirt laid out. Here are the sleeves. They're not attached yet,
and I've got the collar. Here I'm measuring down to the tip of the gusset, from the shoulder
to the very tip. I'm putting a pin to mark how far up I need to sew the sides of the shirt,
and I'm just pulling the gathers just so I can get a better idea of how long to make the armhole
opening, because I am going to have the gathers up at the top to make it look a little bit poofy.
I believe this ended up being about 11 or 12 inches. I did measure there,
but I don't remember the number now. But I did make it match on both sides,
and I do plan to gather the collar and sew it in the same way that I gathered the sleeves.
So there's the armhole, and you can see I have a red pin marking where the tip of the gusset is.
So now I'm just pinning the sides. I probably do more pins than necessary,
but I figure it's better to be safe than sorry. And you do the same thing on the other side,
and then I'm gonna backstitch all the way up to the base of the gusset where that red pin is.
And I backstitch, that way it's a stronger stitch, and I won't have to worry about
it coming apart when I'm wearing it. I won't be finishing the shirt in this video,
but I do plan on finishing the shirt sometime this week, and I want to put out another video.
So if you like this kind of content, if you'd like to subscribe or like this video,
that would be really awesome. I really just like making wholesome content, so
thank you for joining me today, and I hope to have
another video out soon showing you what the shirt looks like.
