Hello YouTube fam, welcome or welcome back to my channel.
If you're new here, my name is Tina and I make videos on lifestyle, home, and DIY projects
every single week.
I first want to wish you guys a happy September.
I cannot believe we are officially into fall and of course I wanted to share with you guys
a few projects inspired by the new season.
So for today's video, we're making some DIY home decor that is perfect for fall.
I definitely would have to say that I'm a summer person, but I absolutely love fall.
I just love all the rich tones and the layers and especially fall fashion.
So I'm actually very excited for fall this year and I hope that you guys find inspo from
this video.
And I would also like to thank Skillshare for sponsoring today's video and I'll talk
a little bit more about them later.
Before we get into it, don't forget to like and subscribe down below and let's go ahead
and get started.
I went to my local Michael's recently and I was so happy to see that their paint selection
was fully stocked.
The shelves have literally been empty for months, so this is the first time that I actually
got to see all the beautiful colors and I definitely stocked up.
And I did notice a new line of paint from Folk Art.
So here they are.
They are the terracotta paints and from what I can tell, it basically just looks like the
baking soda paint, but this is already made for you.
So I'm very interested to try these out and see if they actually give off that terracotta
vibe.
I actually bought a bunch of different colors, but these ones are kind of the more fall ones.
So I have Pueblo, Clay Pot, and this one is called Cavern Moss, which is supposed to be
green, but it really looks like a dusty blue to me.
What I noticed lately in this year's fall decor is a lot of dusty blue, so I definitely
want to incorporate that into my fall decor.
I also grabbed a bunch of Kraft Pumpkins.
So that is the plan for this first project.
So let's get started.
Hello from voiceover Tina!
So I'm taking my Kraft Pumpkin and we're going to do a fun floral design with it.
I'm first using my permanent marker to draw everything on and I'm going to make these
a little bit on the larger side with the stem coming from the bottom and then leaves sprouting
from both sides.
And these definitely do not need to be perfect.
I'm just freehanding these flowers and I'm adding in some intras with things like extra
lines and the stamen and little dots here and there.
And I feel like when you think of fall, you don't exactly think of florals, but there
are so many beautiful florals with a richer, more moody tone to them and I absolutely love
the way that they look, especially when you look at fall wreaths.
I think they are just so beautiful.
So florals are a definite yes for me for the fall time.
Alright, now that we have that all sketched on, I'm using some puffy paint to trace over
the design and I made sure to place my pumpkin in a bowl just to keep it from rolling around
and this is a really great hack, especially if you're working with a round object like
this one.
So I kept my hand as steady as I could and the trick here is just to put even pressure
as you're squeezing onto the bottle and even if you don't trace your design exactly like
it is underneath, that is a-okay.
As you guys can see, it's not exactly matching up and I'm just adjusting it as I go and if
you do mess up at all, you can totally just wipe it away and start again.
If you caught any of my fall DIYs from last year, I did a constellation pumpkin with hot
glue.
So this is a similar concept, but that one was actually quite tricky to create the design
with the hot glue.
So I found that using this puffy paint just works really great because you control it
so much better.
But the only downside is that there is a longer drying time, so I would suggest waiting about
four hours before turning it over and then working on the other side.
Okay, so here it is all dried and now we're ready to paint it.
I'm going to be using the color Pueblo which is a beautiful light orangey brownish color
and with this first coat, I honestly was iffy about the terracotta paint.
It was less textured than I was expecting and I knew that I would have to do about three
coats to cover the marker underneath.
As I'm painting, I'm going in one direction side to side and this is going to keep it
looking as even as possible and I'm also using a soft bristle brush which I find to work
best with these types of paints.
One tip that I would suggest for you guys is to do your design in a lighter colored
marker.
I just used black so that it would show up easier on the video, but it definitely took
a lot more coats to cover the black, so save yourself more work later by using something
like a yellow marker instead.
I waited about an hour before going in with the second coat and the texture was just looking
a lot better.
So although the texture is a little bit less than what you might get with the baking soda
the store-bought version is more durable and claims to be weather resistant, so that's
one plus into buying this paint versus DIYing it.
I did about three to four coats of the paint until I was happy with it and the stem was
not cute, so of course we're going to change that up.
So I'm doing this light brown color called Dusty Trail in the same terracotta paint.
Now you can totally leave it like this for a very beautiful minimal look and I think
it looks gorgeous.
But if you do want definition, I'm going to go on top of the raised puffy paint with
a lighter version of that orangey color.
And again, we're going to go very slowly here, but if you do happen to make any mistakes
it's pretty easy to go back in with the orange to clean up the lines.
And overall, I would recommend these paints to you guys if you're looking for that terracotta
look without having to create your own paint.
The only downside is that each one of these small bottles is $4, so I definitely would
reserve this for items that need to be a little bit more durable.
🎵
The pumpkin turned out super cute and this is a great project if you have a plain pumpkin
at home and you just want to add some interest to it with your own designs.
I really love the way this looks and that I was able to personalize it and I definitely
need to make more to create a little set of these.
Before we move on to the next project, I wanted to talk to you guys about today's video sponsor,
Skillshare.
If you guys have been watching for a while, you know that I'm a big fan of Skillshare
and if you haven't heard of them before, they are an online learning community filled with
thousands of classes.
Their classes are really great for creatives as well as business owners or really anyone
that's curious to learn a new skill set.
They have so many classes ranging from photography to UX design to even web development and business
analytics, so there really is a wide range of topics and what's really great is that
they change these classes month to month, so you're always going to be learning something
new on here.
I really love the class that I took with Amanda Rach Lee, who is a YouTuber on here and is
the queen of bullet journaling, so I discovered some more classes from her and I'm absolutely
loving this one that's all about lettering affirmations and as you guys know, I love
to letter and calligraphy is something that I'm self-taught in, but learning from a pro
like her has really helped me improve my skills.
If you guys have been wanting to try out Skillshare for a while, now is definitely the time to
do it.
They are doing a special for a one-month subscription of their premium membership, so the first
1,000 people that click on my link down below can sign up for that and I'll have all the
details in the description box.
Moving on to our next project, I really wanted to try candle carving again.
Last time, I tried using some dollar store candles, which were not the best, so I did
pick up some new ones and I think these are going to be a lot better quality and I also
picked up a new set of carving tools, so these are going to be perfect.
Fall is literally the epitome of like candle lighting time, so if you guys want to spice
up some of your candles for the new season, this is definitely the way to go.
For this next DIY, we're going to take the candle and we're also using the wood carving
knife to make a small mark about one inch apart.
And I apologize in advance here, since the candle is white, it's a little bit harder
to see the carving, but I promise you guys that it's there.
So I'm using that little mark to start off my design and I'm creating these wavy lines
to create a mandala-inspired pattern.
So I'm carving all along the top, creating a petal shape.
And when carving, I'm going pretty slowly and not carving in too deep, otherwise it's
going to chip off more wax from the sides, which is something you definitely don't want.
And this process is equally therapeutic as it is stressful to me because I'm also just
trying my very best not to mess up, so major props to the artisans who do this professionally,
they just make this look so much easier than it actually is.
And if you're a beginner to this, I would definitely say to try out a design that's
simple and organic so that's a bit more forgiving if you do mess up.
Within each one of the petal shapes, I'm making these little half circles, so you'll
see that I'm going back and forth in each direction to make sure that it's even.
And to finish this design, I'm carving into the candle at an
angle to create these little triangle shapes.
I also went ahead and replaced the wick to make it longer, so I took a little bit of
wax off from the bottom and then I pulled the old wick out and placed in a new one,
and I'm replacing this wick just to kind of experiment and see if this is going to
work better when I dip it later.
For the other candle, I'm doing an African mud cloth inspired design, so at the very
top I'm making these little V shapes facing upwards as well as downwards.
Then in between those, I'm just moving the carving tool around in a small circle to create
these dots.
So I'm using an image of this pattern for reference, and I'm going to fill it in with
some lines and tiny little triangle shapes and arrows.
So while I was carving, I actually had some wax melting in a tall glass container on my
stovetop, and I wanted to change the color of the wax that I had already, so I'm adding
in some dye chips.
So I'm using an orange and then a teeny tiny bit of the dark blue.
And you guys, once that dark blue was in there, the wax almost looks black, so I was a little
bit concerned, but once I took my popsicle stick out, I could see that this is actually
a marigold color, so I was pretty happy with that.
I removed the wax from the heat, and now we're going to go ahead and dip the candle into
the wax, and I found this to be a little bit tricky to do, but I tried my very best to
dip it in evenly.
And I totally forgot to put something like wax paper or foil down, so I just plopped
it onto my counter here.
And on camera, I feel like this is showing up as a neon yellow, but in real life, it's
a bit more of a rich marigold color, which I think is perfect for fall.
So the second time around, I used a pair of pliers to test out dipping with a shorter
wick, and I think that this worked out quite well.
So I let these dry and cool down completely, and I actually went back into the first candle,
and I'm going to carve it once more so that you're going to see the white wax underneath.
This gives it a little bit more definition and is a nice contrast, and I feel like this
time around, it was quite a bit smoother than the first time.
And honestly guys, I did not know if this project was going to work out.
I was actually inspired by a viral video that I've seen on Instagram before, and I wanted
to see if I could replicate that at home.
So even though the colored wax is a little bit more uneven in some places, I think that
this turned out not too shabby.
Candles are some of my favorite things to bring out for the fall season, and these carved
ones just came out so beautifully.
Introducing fun patterns into your space is a great way to transition into fall, and I
really had so much fun experimenting with this project.
I hope you guys enjoyed those projects and feel inspired to create something new for
the changing season.
I love how each one of the projects came out, so let me know your thoughts below and tell
me which one was your favorite.
And a huge thank you to Skillshare for sponsoring today's video, and don't forget to click
on the link below to get one month of their premium membership for free.
And if you guys were inspired by any of these projects, make sure that you share them over
on Instagram and tag me as well.
I would love to see them.
Since it is fall, I'm going to share some of the recreations from last season, and these
projects are also on my channel, so if you're interested, I will have this one linked below
as well.
I also wanted to do a quick update here since I know that I shared a big announcement over
on Sunday, so sadly, this is one of the last videos that I'm doing in this apartment.
And in the video after this one, it's actually going to be me undoing everything in this
apartment, so that includes getting rid of the removable wallpaper as well as the peel
and stick floor tiles, which honestly, I'm very nervous to get rid of.
And I'll also be answering some of your questions as well as just explaining why we're moving,
and there's going to be a lot of good stuff in that video, so make sure that you stay
tuned on Sunday.
Thank you guys all so much for watching, stay inspired, and I will see you on Sunday.
Bye!
