Small, lightweight and powerful - the new JET system for the LS4 from M&D Flugzeugbau! A well tested system which is already flying in 200+ JS1 and JS3 gliders.

This sound when it is powering up. It's like I'm a Top Gun pilot.
Let's try the Alice 4 Jet.
Aileron control. Airspeed is rising. 80 kilometers an hour. 100 flying.
Quite interesting. We have speed 125. Nice lake on the right hand side.
But I need to focus on the tip. And there we can already see the sea. Awesome.
Would be fun to make a jet pass in the coast.
Gear is retracted. He said I should have fun.
So cool.
Okay let's retract it.
Jetting here with 200 kilometers an hour is really amazing in the Alice 4 level flight.
200 kph. That's probably crazy strange.
Up to now it is an amazing flight. We don't have thermals. That's really the bad thing.
But we have this amazing jet engine here. I will show you from the outside how it looks like when
the jet gets out. First of all we need power for the jet control unit. Let's turn it on.
So now the unit is on. We need to extend the jet.
To switch again. Now it is starting. I'm flying here with 100 kph. Not too fast.
Now it is slowly starting. I think it is a great setup here. The Alice 4
is an amazing glider. It's a club class glider but it flies very well. It's just an LS glider
which performs great with the new winglets. Also the heavier empty weight is not an issue.
And then what's my opinion about the jet system. I think it is really amazing to have an option for
these old gliders like the Alice 4 to retrofit some kind of sustainer. Usually you don't want to
make an outlanding somewhere far away on Sunday afternoon so that you need to have a big tour
in the evening or even at night. The jet engine has the big big advantage that it is very light
and it only is so small so it only takes a small area in the fuselage so also a small hole
so that it is possible to retrofit. It is a very amazing cool feeling to start the jet
when it runs up and so on. The thrust is good. You can climb with more than two meters per second.
You can fly up to 200 kilometers an hour level flight which is also outstanding to get home
quickly. If you extend the jet and it is not working at some point the jet system is so small.
It is like a landing gear. It is really tiny and it makes only a little bit of more drag than
normal. So here you can see the the jet engine is still on the outside but I don't have any big
sink rate. It is here a little bit of turbulent and yeah it doesn't affect the performance.
The fuel consumption that's something of course which is not really great. If you try to save
some fuel you can fly with 40 liters per hour. At full thrust it's even more.
It's not great but you will have a good range with these 19-20 liters of fuel.
You can get to the next airfield. I don't know how many fly how many kilometers but
at the end it doesn't matter too much. You don't buy a system like this to just fly like a jet.
You use the system to get back home to have some fun perhaps in the evening.
That's why I think it's not a big deal. You don't need to drive by car and trailer
these long distances in both ways. Therefore it is an amazing system.
That's the airfield where I started and where I will land next to the small lake here. Nice area.
Let's have a quick look at this LS4. As you can see this one has the new winglets.
With a new shape and aerodynamic design from DG. Then they have here this vent.
This air extractor down here and then of course the highlight of this LS4 jet. Of course it's the
jet. That's the same jet system as installed in the JS1 and JS3 already. They have sold I think
200 or 250 of these jet systems already. So it is a proven system just here installed in a
different glider in an old LS4. Of course this one here is refinished completely by M&D. It looks like
a brand new glider. Would I personally install a jet system in an LS4 or other club class glider?
Well it depends. If you want to do some cool stuff like travel by glider,
if you just want to have a glider with a sustainer engine then I think it is a perfect solution.
Because gliders like the LS4 have a good performance, they have a perfect handling and
for the system price of the jet and the airframe I think you won't get any other good solutions.
And of course the jet it is it's so cool to fly in level flight with 200 kilometers an hour.
Of course the system here is not completely cheap. You need to calculate about 30 000 euros
to retrofit such a system in an LS4. Thanks to M&D for letting me fly this glider. I hope you
enjoyed this video as well. And then if you haven't, subscribe to my channel, like the video
