Thanks again to @FliteTest Check out their video on making this Giant RC Airplane: https://youtu.be/WEKgTXl7xh4
Previously on this episode of Peter Shrevepool. Last year we made this giant RC airplane. It had
over 50 engines but it was kind of a failure. That didn't go very well. So this year we're
going to go even bigger. I need to build this really really big airplane to 1. Redeem myself
and 2. Make it survive a huge battle royale versus like a hundred smaller RC airplanes.
Josh is going to help me hot wire these foam wings and we're going to take these new wings
and glue them together out of the field. If you guys want to see more intricate stuff about like
the hot wire and more of the build process check it out on flight test. This video is done in
collaboration with them so huge thanks to them for helping make this happen. We got these hot
wire wings that are in the shape of the right profile. Obviously it's a little noodley but when
we put when we skin it with the foam board it should be pretty sturdy. The neat thing about
the wing design is that the d-profile of the wing in the front is all solid foam so it should be
really strong because the goal for this airplane is to fly and then survive tons of smaller
airplanes running into it trying to bring it down. So on the back we have foam that just covers
up the ribs to make the wing super lightweight because I'm really expecting a very very light
wing loading so the plane can fly very slowly so it has less energy to impart onto planes or
perhaps people if I lose control of it. There's still a little bit of work to do as far as building
goes because I wanted you know the kids to have something to do because for all of you who don't
know flight fest is this annual event that happens every single year with tons of people that just
show up to just get high in the sky with airplanes.
This build is going along pretty well I have Steve and my brother guiding people to what to do
he's a CH-47 mechanic he's got this I think. Now I should probably reiterate that this plane is very
very big it's actually bigger than all of my ultralights that I've built in the past
it's got a wingspan of 32 feet it's about the same as the one we made last year but we're
going to ignore that because the one last year you know only went halfway around the field.
This year I will not be satisfied until the plane flies.
This build is going pretty awesome but unfortunately looks like everyone's
stolen the outlets so quick shout out to Zendura for sending me this super base pro
this thing is pretty sweet it's got outlets charges my batteries we can use this hot knife
with it pretty sick anyways thanks to them for sending me this thing out and it's super portable
for this build we've got just four motors I originally wanted 100 motors but unfortunately
the shipper that I ordered these from completely screwed up and didn't send me my motors so anyways
we got these four giant monster motors from flight test I think this should produce a collective
thrust of around 60 pounds which should be more than enough to fly this plane we're working on
the plane it's getting closer currently we're working on a radio install but then we'll be
good for a quick maiden flight the goal is to quickly fly the airplane determine that it works
once the seven o'clock combat comes around we're gonna put this thing in there and I need all you
guys to try to bring it down now the plane is complete we have to get this thing out of the
tent I think it's gonna fit over uh yes we're just doing the shimmy we did this last year
we're gonna slide the tail to one side and then get it out time to attach the wings to the fuselage
so I got these handy dandy ratchet straps because everyone puts ratchet straps to attach their wings
it's honestly like the old model airplanes the rubber bands except really heavy duty
ratchet straps and I think this is gonna hold great not so light as I thought it's time for
the first flight now I have set this up a little bit tail heavy because I remember last year the
first time I tried it I tried to balance it at one fourth of the quarter of the wingspan
but anyways I just made the plane crash because it was just too nose heavy and it just dived off
there accelerating too much then hit the ground and it was all over flashback over so now we're
gonna actually try this plane okay I took too many liberties it was actually just too tail heavy
anyways I just managed to catch it with a thrust and not do too much damage but unfortunately this
wing is a little sad right now uh it turns out the little glue joints failed not the spars the
glue joint um what are these plates called these plates that I made out of plywood here is just
solely relying on Gorilla Glue to hold together so these broke
we're gonna get some cap strips out of aluminum put these on top Josh is gonna run a store and
grab these we're gonna put them in and then we should be good to go for another trial flight
okay that looks good it's just definitely a lot sturdier without a whole lot more
so let's get this thing on the cart and try it again this bad boy's not going anywhere but uh
time for the real maiden flight and then we can get on to the carnage
okay here we go
it flies oh no oh no I'm losing it it's like not too much
all right all right it's back in the air it's back in the air we're good we're good
now it's time to land it look out Dave here it comes okay so I redeemed myself the plane did fly
but now it's time for the thing you actually probably clicked for
a hundred smaller airplanes versus the world's largest foam airplane so here's another flight
fest tradition every year they tend to throw all their smaller airplanes up in the sky
and they try to rem at each other usually it's like a last man standing style derby
where the last one's still flying usually wins a pretty cool prize but sometimes it
gets a little bit boring so they have them do something special at the very end to try to win
some prizes now the prize for them to take me down is bragging rights I didn't bring any prizes
all right anyways let's get this show on the road get the airplane in the air let's go
I think we just got hit but I'm losing motor power
oh man the plane went down I don't know what that was I was trying to give it all the beans
you know what how many beans I was giving it with the controller it was going down so I
tried to milk it well I couldn't it's just out there somewhere man that sucks I could have really
kept flying this thing and it looks like the motors are still even working so it didn't even
get hit there I wanted this to be a little more spectacular oh I think I know what it is I think
we wrapped these escs up a little bit too much for armor and unfortunately I think they overheated
and simply just stopped producing power another year another airplane successfully completed
the children have now decided to feast on the carcass of my poor airplane
