Right, as we know, Ten Hag is going to be Manchester United's new manager as of the summer.
And there's some rumours that he's going to be given somewhere in the region of £200m to spend.
And over the last few days we've been looking at just how many players need to stay and how many need to go
and I think you could very quickly get 8, 9, 10 players moved on.
Being realistic, you're not going to bring in more than 4, maybe 5 players all at once.
And I hope that Manchester United try to bring in the maximum amount of first team players that we can bring in
because I think spunking all our money on Kane and Rice doesn't even move us closer to being in any sort of position to compete.
United need to maximise how many players we can bring in and we need to cover as many positions as possible
to have a genuine cultural reset on the pitch.
So I've identified 5 players, you know I love the number 5,
I've identified 5 players that I think could come in and do bits for Manchester United in a number of different positions.
The first one's a very, very cheap one. This is our risk.
This is the one that I'm not 100% certain, but like the rest of them, that would work.
And that is Enzo Fernandes. So he's a midfielder, he plays often as a deep-lying playmaker,
a little bit like Michael Carrick, but he has a propensity to sort of arrive late in the box and score goals.
And that's not really like Michael Carrick.
He also can show his creativity in the final third, he's got a bit of a penchant for giving incisive last passes,
he also plays between the lines and he can move the ball quickly and efficiently in tight spaces.
His passing range is wonderful, he's got a real innate sense of distribution and possession in between the lines
and he finds teammates in real deep, dangerous areas and he's prone to instigating attacks.
He can be a little bit late with some of his challenges, which is not necessarily the worst of things,
but he also possesses the ability to regain possession using a real low centre of gravity,
manages to muscle opposition players off the ball in real essential areas of the pitch.
His directional first touch is really good and it means that Enzo has the ability to be a one-touch passer,
he's got excellent off-the-ball movement, he's got a real give-and-go and a real tempo about the way he plays
and he circulates the football at a real fast-paced tempo with some energy about him and we like that.
Now, we don't often venture out of Europe, it doesn't seem like our scouts even know where South America is half of the time,
but sometimes you're going to get an absolute diamond in the rough and sometimes it's worth taking a gamble.
This is the gamble in my little list here, he's available for about £16.6 million, which is next to nothing at the moment
and I think this is someone that could go on and become world class, he's only 21 and I think we stick him in there
and say, let him do what he's going to do, he probably needs to develop a little bit.
Now, the starting centre mid, the real number six, to play number six you've got to be class, that's the rules, right?
The starting number six is Tua Mane, Monaco, number six, 22 years of age, going to cost you somewhere in the region of about £45m.
Now, he is an absolute nightmare to play against and he is the embodiment of the sort of defensive midfielder that United are crying out for.
He's athletic, he combines that with a real turn of pace, he's got real good anticipation and reading of the game,
which you need to play in that position.
But not only does he win the ball back for Monaco with just ridiculous, astonishing regularity,
but he moves it forward beautiful once he's got it.
He's got a range of passing that allows midfielders to just run off him, which I think is something that Ten Hag would really like.
It lets them get into space and he's got the ability to be able to find them when they do.
He is an exceptional tackler. He ranks in the 87th percentile for midfielders in the top five leagues with nearly three tackles won per 90 minutes.
That's more than other world-class defensive midfielders such as Casemiro and Kante.
And he combines that aggressive nature in defending with awareness of attacking situations developing around him.
He can time his challenges really, really well.
He's in the 98th percentile for interceptions per 90, that's godlike.
He's literally a metric monster when it comes to what epitomises being a defensive midfielder.
He's robust, he's athletic and he's more than comfortable driving the ball forward into advanced positions once he wins it back
rather than passing it out like covers.
Instantly better than Ndidi in this metric, for example.
Really composed, really skillful, can play in tight spaces.
He's got great feet and he's able to dribble his way out of trouble.
He's also shown potential to get forward.
He's exceptional in the air, which I think really lends its way to playing in England.
And he's mature.
And I think maturity in your game is something that really lends to being world-class.
You've got to remember, this is a 22-year-old kid playing with a level of maturity you don't see until you're 27, 28.
Ligon gets a lot of critics.
And I think one of the things about it that can be a positive is
in terms of the physicality and the speed and the stamina required to play it,
it's actually one of the closest to the Premier League.
There's things about Ligon that are genuinely pony and bang average.
But the physicality, the stamina, the toughness required match what he's going to need in the Premier League.
So for me, this is probably the biggest name on my list.
He's the one that we need to go and get.
There are links with Real Madrid and I think if it's given the choice of playing for us or Madrid,
he's probably off to Spain.
But I would love to see us try and bring him in.
Next up on the list then is we're going to Bundesliga and we're going for a right winger.
22 years of age, 42 million, Moussa Diaby.
Latest in the pipeline of a list of young stars that are just lighting up the Bundesliga.
He's having an explosive season and he's been quite rightly overshadowed by Florian Wurz
and Patrick Schick who are just doing madness.
But he's had a massive part to play in why those two are also doing madness as well.
He's got 16 goals and 11 assists in 38 games.
And I know what you're saying, that doesn't convert to Premier League numbers.
And you're right, it doesn't.
But it's still decent and he's still only 22.
Lightning quick, has the nickname of speed demon because he's got frightening acceleration.
Doesn't rely on his speed though, he's a really skilful dribbler with excellent close control,
really low centre of gravity and he rides challenges really well.
Naturally gifted, smooth technically, clever with his touches.
Pearl of a left foot, finishing is absolutely dead eye.
And he can go around the outside on his right foot as well.
The fact he's left footed is something that United are really missing.
Greenwood, we don't know what's going on with, but someone from the right hand side
and actually he plays like a winger where Greenwood didn't.
Coming in off the right hand side onto his left foot provides a real balance
and a bit more width to Manchester United's attack and probably balance as well.
I don't even think he's touched his ceiling.
And again, I think he's someone that you could definitely go and get
that would be well worth bringing in if you're not going to get someone like Anthony
because we are going to go to Ajax and we're going to try and bring some players
but they're not just going to give us every Ajax player to a piece.
Next one is Paul Torres, centre half, 25 years of age, 45 million.
This is the oldest player on my list at 25.
You can't have a cultural reset by bringing in 38-year-olds.
Someone that we've been strongly linked with and he's only continued to fulfill
that potential going from strength to strength.
He is a fantastic reader of the game.
He's got sensational positional awareness and he will be a great complement
to Raphael Varane.
Keeping with the trend of the modern game, he's just turned 25 but belongs
in the new wave of young defenders who have grown up in a professional ranks
with a strong emphasis on what they do in possession.
He's exceptional at it.
Comfortable playing a team that looks to keep the ball, move it from the back
as well as fighting through the opposition pressure.
He can mix it up.
He's got a passing range to find solutions.
He's got the composure.
He's press resistant.
He's not really able to rely on any standout physical attributes.
He's a thinking man's defender and this can often see how well he judges
in attacking situations.
If he can add that with genuine communication and leadership,
I think you've got a real player on your hands there.
He steps out.
He makes interceptions.
He puts an end.
It's proactive defending rather than reactive or passive defending.
I really like that.
Here's a bit of a wild card.
Not as much of a risk I don't think as Fernandez but a definite wild card
and that is Gianluca Scamacca, a striker, 23 years of age,
around 25 to 27.5 million supposedly.
This guy is an absolute giant, 6'5",
and it's not the only reason that he's been compared to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
His hold up play has really developed.
Once he really relied on having a sweet first touch
but now he's able to receive real difficult passes in the air
as well as using that massive stature that he's got to fend off opponents.
He's proven to be a really good decision-maker.
Decision-making you can't really buy.
He really helps drive that team forward towards the penalty box
and he's got an underrated ability to maneuver his way into the box
with quick feet when he gets there, which is ridiculous for someone who's 6'5",
and I think that's where the Zlatan sort of comparisons come in as well
because Zlatan was pretty adept at doing that.
Doesn't have the raw power that someone like a Haaland has
but very wiry, very agile, and he's got enough speed to get away from the defenders.
Certainly someone that I don't think is world-class
but he's someone on the verge of hitting the next level
which still might be a level away from world-class
but if United are going to bring someone in to give Cristiano Thursday nights off
and learn his trade, you can't go far wrong with this kid as far as I'm concerned.
And then the last one, and perhaps the most exciting one,
I said we was going to Ajax to pick someone up.
He can play centre-half, right-back, centre-mid, 20 years of age, £30 million.
Timber plays as a centre-half in a back four
but he's played quite a lot at right-back
and I think when he got Donny van der Beek in the dressing room
he's going to want to bring somebody else on the pitch that's played for him.
You've seen how successful he was in doing that with Haller
as well as bringing through the academy players that he's brought through at Ajax.
I am certain he's going to want to bring one player at least from Ajax
and I think it would be Timber.
He comes through the Ajax academy so you know he's technically good.
Very comfortable in possession, likes to carry the ball into the opposition half
which suits being either a full-back or playing down the middle.
Renowned for really good positioning, really good reading of the game,
like elite reading of the game.
He's very aggressive and he's strong in the tackle towards opposition forwards
which I think really lends himself to playing in the Premier League.
He is quick, he is physical beyond his size
because his size is the thing that everyone's going to look at.
He's the same height as me.
But we've had Daley Blind who's only one centimetre taller
who was an effective centre-half.
Him and Chris Smalling were actually ridiculous as a centre-half partnership.
So I think even though he's a very small centre-half
I don't think it's a different thing because in Europe
no one's really going to be playing it down the pipe to him
and if Burnley stay up that might be an issue for him.
But with the way English football is going
you're seeing more channel balls, you're seeing more cutbacks.
That relies on an agile defending that's aggressive
and knows what they're doing rather than big lumps that can just head it away.
Teams aren't really playing that sort of football.
And do you know what? If we come up against one of those teams
we just have to deal with it.
But most of the teams are playing technical, smaller forwards
that rely on speed and stamina.
So you've got to match that with someone who's got speed and stamina
aggression and reading of the game.
And for me, Timber matches all of those things.
Now, what's the total of that?
Actually, it's £206.6 million.
So you give me a budget of £200 million
£206.6 million, that might be a net spend, right?
That might just be if we bring all them in.
We're definitely going to move some people on.
I don't think we're going to get loads for the players that we're going to sell.
But there's a very good start
and you've probably made four first-choice players
if not five first-choice players in that.
So you've started to transform that first-team squad.
That's my list. Let me know yours in the comments.
And I'll catch you in the next one.
Laters.
