In 1954 I lived with a family in Bern, Switzerland for 6 months through a program by the Red Cross to help German families recover during the aftermath of WWII. In the photo I am with my Swiss neighborhood friends playing with our dolls and pet rabbits. I went to first grade there and also learned to speak Swiss German.

The song Zämehäbe (Standing together) by the group Heimweh (Homesick) reminds me of the kindness of the Swiss people and the beauty of their country. Though I had a wonderful time, I was also homesick, missing my mom and dad and siblings. Thank you, my Swiss friends, for making my life more wonderful!

The Song: Zämehäbe by Heimweh
(freely translated from Swiss-German)

HOLDING TOGETHER
Oh, how far away you are
but I feel you close nearby
Though both of us are now alone
lonely we are not
What welds us together isn't only the good
No, we also share what's difficult
Holding together, standing together
through dark hours, together we go
Holding together, you and I
until these times have passed
All those who fight for us
who day and night are suffering
We want to give you hope
The whole country stands behind you
Holding together, standing together
through dark hours, together we go
Holding together, you and I
until these times have passed
until these times have passed
