This was where the childhood home of Katsura Tarou was built, and where he rebuilt the current house in 1909. He was the second longest serving Prime Minister of Japan. Born into a Samurai family, Katsura Tarou was educated at Meirinkan, one of the three main Han schools during the Edo period, and completed his studies abroad as an exchange student in Germany witnessing first hand the German's crushing defeat of the French. After his return to Japan, Katsura Tarou was credited with modernizing the Japanese military based on the German model. He would later serve as Prime Minister for three terms, being ennobled, as a Prince at the end of his second term.
The retired Prime Minister died at the age of 66 of stomach cancer in Tokyo.
